Here’s Why There Are So Few New Cars for Under $30,000

New cars under $30,000 are scarce as automakers retire entry-level models, drop base trims, and shift toward larger vehicles. Compact cars still averaged below the threshold in August 2026.

There are fewer new cars under $30,000 because automakers have discontinued many inexpensive models, trimmed some of the cheapest versions of the models that remain, and shifted sales toward larger SUVs and pickups. The threshold is still possible for some shoppers: in August 2026, compact cars averaged $27,997 in transaction price. But that figure sits far below the $50,089 average for all new vehicles, and it does not guarantee a particular model or deal is available near you.

How much has the under-$30,000 market shrunk?

Several measures show the category getting smaller, but they describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Registrations: S&P Global Mobility found that the share of U.S. new vehicles registered below $30,000 fell from about half in 2017 to barely one-quarter in 2024. Its analysis used the MSRP of the lowest available trim.
  • Model count: S&P counted 16 fewer models meeting its affordability definition between 2017 and 2023, after adjusting the ceiling for inflation.
  • Advertised inventory: Cars Commerce reported that vehicles priced under $30,000 represented 14% of new-vehicle inventory in the first quarter of 2025, down from 38% during 2019–2021. That is an inventory share, not a share of registrations.

Together, these measures point to fewer inexpensive choices and less inventory, but none alone explains how much of the decline came from any single cause.

Why are there fewer low-priced models?

Automakers have discontinued entry-level nameplates

Many once-affordable small cars have left the U.S. market. S&P Global Mobility lists the Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Mazda2, Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta, Dodge Dart, Chrysler 200, Chevrolet Sonic, and Chevrolet Spark among lower-priced nameplates eliminated over the past decade. When a model disappears, buyers lose one more route into the new-car market at a low price.

Sales have shifted toward larger, more expensive vehicles

Automakers have increasingly emphasized SUVs and pickups, which can generate more profit per sale than smaller, cheaper sedans. The result is a market whose overall average reflects what people buy across many vehicle types—not the cost of a basic compact car.

In August 2026, the five highest-volume vehicle segments accounted for 65.1% of new-vehicle sales, according to Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive. Midsize SUVs led, with compact SUVs second. That sales mix helps explain why the market-wide average is much higher than the average for compact cars; it does not mean every new car costs around the overall average.

Some models remain, but their cheapest trims do not

A model can stay on sale while its lowest-priced version is dropped. Cars.com reports that automakers have removed some base and mid-level trims while emphasizing better-equipped versions. If the entry trim vanishes, the model’s starting price rises even if its name and basic vehicle category remain unchanged.

What do current prices say about the $30,000 line?

Measure August 2026 average What it represents
All new vehicles $50,089 Transaction price across the market; not the price of a typical entry-level car.
Compact cars $27,997 Transaction price for the compact-car segment.
Subcompact SUVs $31,149 Transaction price for the subcompact-SUV segment.

The compact-car average was below $30,000, while the subcompact-SUV average was above it. Segment averages do not establish that a specific model is available at that price, or that a buyer in a particular area can get one for that amount.

Other price measures answer different questions. The average MSRP across all new vehicles was $51,852 in August 2026. S&P Global Mobility reported an average advertised new-vehicle list price of $49,213 in April 2026, based on 2.85 million advertised units. Neither figure is the same as a segment’s average transaction price.

Why do sticker prices and actual entry prices differ?

A base MSRP is a starting point, not the full price a shopper will pay. Destination charges are added to MSRP, and the lowest trim may not be offered at a nearby dealership—or may be unavailable altogether. Discounts and incentives also change over time.

In August 2026, incentives averaged 6.5% of the average transaction price, down from 7.2% in August 2025, according to Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive. S&P Global Mobility described discounts tightening in its April 2026 report. These dated market figures do not predict the discount on a particular car.

Could trade policy make affordable cars even harder to find?

Import dependence exposes the under-$30,000 category to changes in trade policy. Cars Commerce estimated that nearly 90% of sub-$30,000 vehicles in its first-quarter 2025 report were assembled outside the United States; a separate first-half 2025 report put the share at 92%. These are estimates from different reporting periods, not one identical measurement.

Cars Commerce warned that tariffs could contribute to price increases or production cuts in this category. The available figures do not establish how much a specific tariff changed a specific model’s price, or how much of the shrinking affordable segment is attributable to trade policy. Tariffs are a risk to availability and prices, not a complete explanation for the trend.

How should you check whether a car is really under $30,000?

  1. Compare the same price measure. Check whether a quoted figure is MSRP, advertised list price, or transaction price before comparing it with a segment average.
  2. Confirm the cheapest trim is actually offered. Look for the base trim in the manufacturer’s current model information and in local dealer inventory; a model’s advertised starting price is not proof that the trim is in stock.
  3. Check the full sticker. Include destination charges and any other required charges shown in the vehicle’s pricing information rather than treating base MSRP as the complete amount.
  4. Compare vehicle categories carefully. A compact-car average and a subcompact-SUV average are not interchangeable, and a national average does not determine the price of a local vehicle.
  5. Verify current discounts and inventory. Incentives and available trims change, so confirm the current offer and the specific vehicle before relying on an older price figure.
