Here’s What 2024 Toyota Tacoma Buyers Need To Know About the 2.4L Turbo Engine

The 2024 Tacoma's 2.4L turbo is torquier than the old V6, but output varies widely by trim and transmission. Here is what buyers should know about i-FORCE MAX, fuel economy, towing, maintenance, recalls, and reliability.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma’s 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is capable, torquier than the outgoing V6, and not inherently a reason to reject the truck. But every 2024 U.S.-market Tacoma does not make the same power. The base SR automatic produces 228 horsepower, most nonhybrid automatics make 278 horsepower, manual-transmission trucks make 270 horsepower, and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system produces 326 horsepower in most applications—or 323 horsepower in the Trailhunter.

As of August 9, 2026, there is no evidence in the reviewed NHTSA records of a broad Tacoma 2.4L engine recall equivalent to the major Tundra V6 campaign. There was, however, a documented early-production automatic-transmission problem, along with software, brake-hose, and labeling recalls affecting certain trucks. The right buying decision depends less on the words 2.4L turbo and more on the exact tune, transmission, drivetrain, equipment, intended load, and vehicle identification number.

The 2024 Tacoma powertrain lineup at a glance

The phrase 2.4L turbo does not identify one uniform 2024 Tacoma engine tune. Toyota used the same basic T24A-FTS gasoline engine across the lineup, but changed its calibration and paired it with different transmissions and, in the hybrid, an electric motor.

Configuration Output Transmission What it means for a buyer
SR i-FORCE automatic 228 hp / 243 lb-ft 8-speed automatic Entry-level tune; do not assume it makes the advertised 278 hp.
Gasoline manual 270 hp / 310 lb-ft 6-speed iMT manual More driver involvement, but less output than the mainstream automatic.
Most nonhybrid automatic models 278 hp / 317 lb-ft 8-speed automatic The primary gasoline configuration in the middle and upper trims.
i-FORCE MAX hybrid 326 hp / 465 lb-ft 8-speed hybrid automatic Most torque and stronger low-speed response; automatic-only.
Trailhunter i-FORCE MAX 323 hp / 465 lb-ft 8-speed hybrid automatic Toyota’s 2024 brochure lists a slightly different horsepower figure for this specific configuration.

These figures come from Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma brochure and Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma overview. Hybrid horsepower is a system-output rating, not simply the gasoline engine’s output.

When shopping a new or used truck, confirm all of the following rather than relying on a listing that only says 2.4L turbo:

  • SR or another trim
  • Automatic or manual transmission
  • i-FORCE or i-FORCE MAX
  • Two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
  • Cab and bed configuration
  • Factory tires and off-road equipment

What the T24A-FTS engine actually is

The gasoline engine used in every U.S.-market 2024 Tacoma is Toyota engine code T24A-FTS. It is a 2,393-cc, turbocharged inline four-cylinder with double overhead camshafts and 16 valves. Toyota’s 2024 owner information specifies unleaded gasoline and identifies the 2,393-cc turbocharged four-cylinder; a Toyota product-information specification document also lists an 11:1 compression ratio and D-4S dual fuel injection, combining direct and port injection. The latter specifications are available through a manufacturer-document PDF mirror, so they should be treated as product-information details rather than assumed to come from every section of the owner’s manual.

That combination gives the Tacoma a smaller-displacement engine with turbocharged airflow and relatively sophisticated fuel delivery. The standard i-FORCE version and the i-FORCE MAX version use the same basic gasoline engine, but the hybrid adds different calibration, cooling, transmission, battery, and electric-motor hardware. An engine-family name alone does not tell you how a particular truck will perform or what its complete service requirements are.

Toyota’s direct sources are the 2024 Tacoma digital owner’s manual and the 2024 Tacoma product-information specification PDF.

Fuel and oil specifications

  • Fuel: Unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Premium fuel is not required for the stock U.S.-market engine.
  • Oil: SAE 0W-20 multigrade oil meeting the ILSAC GF-6A specification.
  • Oil quantity: The owner’s manual lists approximately 5.9 U.S. quarts, or 5.6 liters, with a filter change.

Toyota’s brochure table also shows 5.6 for engine-oil capacity, which is most naturally read as liters, while the owner’s manual states the U.S.-quart quantity. Use the owner’s manual for the service procedure and use the dipstick to establish the final level instead of treating a rounded capacity number as an instruction to overfill.

Which trims get which powertrain?

The standard i-FORCE gasoline engine is available throughout the 2024 Tacoma range. The manual transmission is limited to selected gasoline configurations, including SR, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road versions shown in Toyota’s 2024 materials. It is not available with the hybrid.

i-FORCE MAX is available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. It is standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter. Toyota does not offer the hybrid Tacoma with two-wheel drive, so buyers who want a 2WD truck or a manual transmission must choose a gasoline model.

Exact cab, bed, drivetrain, and trim combinations can affect availability. The Toyota brochure’s equipment and specification tables are more reliable than a generic online trim summary when evaluating a particular truck.

Is the 2.4L turbo powerful enough?

For most normal Tacoma use, yes. The standard turbo four produces its peak torque much earlier in the rev range than the previous naturally aspirated Tacoma V6, and even the mainstream automatic’s 317 lb-ft exceeds the outgoing V6’s torque figure. That gives the new truck more readily available low-rpm pulling force for merging, climbing, carrying gear, and towing.

It does not feel exactly like the old V6. The new engine delivers its performance through turbocharging, a smaller displacement, an eight-speed automatic, and—in i-FORCE MAX trucks—electric assistance. Throttle response, sound, and high-rpm character are different. Buyers who loved the V6’s naturally aspirated response should drive both before deciding.

Independent testing supports the conclusion that the standard engine is adequate rather than sluggish. MotorTrend recorded a 7.4-second 0-to-60-mph time in a four-wheel-drive TRD Sport with the standard engine. Car and Driver recorded 7.6 seconds for a hybrid TRD Off-Road and 7.7 seconds for a TRD Pro. Those results are not directly interchangeable because tires, curb weight, gearing, suspension, and calibration differ. They also show why the hybrid’s extra output does not automatically make every hybrid Tacoma quicker than every gasoline truck.

The standard engine’s strengths are its low-speed torque and useful acceleration. Its compromises are turbocharged complexity, a different sound and response than the V6, and the fact that the least expensive SR automatic receives a significantly lower-output tune.

i-FORCE versus i-FORCE MAX

i-FORCE MAX does not replace the gasoline engine with a different gasoline unit. It adds a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed hybrid transmission, plus a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery. The system is a conventional self-charging hybrid: it recovers energy during deceleration and does not need to be plugged into an external charger.

Most i-FORCE MAX Tacomas are rated at 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of system torque. Toyota’s 2024 brochure lists the Trailhunter at 323 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. The important everyday difference is the torque increase and the electric motor’s ability to provide immediate assistance at low speeds, not just the larger horsepower number.

What the hybrid adds

  • Far more system torque than the gasoline versions
  • Strong low-speed response for crawling, climbing, and heavy-load work
  • Useful assistance when towing or accelerating uphill
  • Automatic operation without an external charging routine
  • Standard equipment on TRD Pro and Trailhunter
  • A hybrid-battery warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles; Toyota lists eight years or 100,000 miles for other hybrid-related components

What the hybrid costs you

  • A higher purchase price
  • No manual transmission
  • No 2WD hybrid configuration
  • Additional electrical and mechanical components and hybrid-specific diagnostics
  • More weight, which can reduce payload or towing capacity in some configurations
  • Fuel-economy gains that are useful but not comparable to a small commuter hybrid

Choose i-FORCE MAX primarily for its torque, performance, and availability in high-end off-road trims. It can save fuel compared with some similarly equipped 4WD gasoline Tacomas, but fuel savings alone may not justify the added price.

Fuel economy: better, but not dramatically better

Final 2024 EPA estimates vary with drivetrain, cab, bed, tires, transmission, and trim. Toyota’s brochure lists approximate ranges rather than one number that applies to every Tacoma:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Configuration group Approximate EPA city Approximate EPA highway
Gasoline, 2WD 20–21 mpg 24–26 mpg
Gasoline, 4WD 18–20 mpg 23–24 mpg
i-FORCE MAX 22–23 mpg 24 mpg

Use the window sticker for the exact truck. Off-road tires, lift kits, roof racks, armor, payload, high speeds, cold weather, short trips, and towing can all reduce real-world mileage. The hybrid’s advantage is usually most apparent in stop-and-go driving, low-speed trail work, and comparisons with heavier 4WD gasoline versions. It is not guaranteed to beat every 2WD gasoline Tacoma in every driving situation.

The original early coverage of the 2024 Tacoma was published before final hybrid fuel-economy figures were available. A current buyer guide should use Toyota’s final brochure estimates, not an assumption that the hybrid will automatically deliver major fuel savings.

Towing and payload: do not shop by the headline number

Toyota advertises a maximum Tacoma tow rating of up to 6,500 pounds, but only specific configurations reach that figure. Published ratings vary by roughly 3,500 to 6,500 pounds depending on cab, bed, trim, drivetrain, powertrain, and equipment.

Before towing, verify all of these items:

  1. The exact tow rating for the vehicle’s cab, bed, engine, transmission, drivetrain, and tires.
  2. The door-jamb payload label on that specific truck.
  3. The owner’s-manual towing table.
  4. The trailer’s loaded weight and tongue weight.
  5. The combined weight of passengers and cargo.
  6. Trailer-brake requirements and the truck’s brake-controller equipment.

Payload is the commonly overlooked limitation. Tongue weight counts against payload, as do passengers, tools, camping equipment, bed cargo, a topper, a winch, steel bumpers, skid plates, recovery gear, and other accessories. A Tacoma rated to tow a particular trailer on paper may not be able to carry that trailer’s tongue weight once the cabin and truck are loaded.

Toyota recommends sway control for trailers above 2,000 pounds and a weight-distribution hitch for trailers over 5,000 pounds, according to the towing guidance reported in Cars.com’s Tacoma towing test. Those are Toyota’s recommendations for the Tacoma; they should not be presented as a universal substitute for checking the truck, trailer, hitch, and local requirements.

Aftermarket modifications can change the practical result. Larger tires, a suspension lift, a steel rear bumper, a roof tent, or a full overlanding build may make the truck more capable off-road while consuming payload and changing braking, gearing, and handling. They do not increase the factory tow rating.

Maintenance requirements owners need to follow

Oil-change intervals

Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma maintenance guide presents oil and filter replacement at the normal factory interval commonly stated as 10,000 miles or 12 months. The guide also specifies shorter service for certain special operating conditions, including dusty-road use. Read the actual maintenance schedule for the truck’s operating pattern rather than applying one interval to every owner.

Owners who tow frequently, drive dusty trails, make repeated short trips, or plan to keep the truck well beyond the warranty period may reasonably choose more frequent oil changes. A 5,000-mile interval can be conservative maintenance advice for severe use or long-term ownership, but it is not Toyota’s universal required interval for every 2024 Tacoma.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep receipts and service records. Check the oil level periodically, particularly during the first year and before long trips. A turbocharged engine should not be allowed to run with a low oil level, and an oil-pressure warning requires immediate attention.

Turbocharger cooldown

The owner’s manual instructs the driver to let the engine idle immediately after high-speed driving, hill climbing, or other high-load operation to help prevent turbocharger damage. This does not mean the truck must idle after every ordinary drive or every highway exit. It is guidance for sustained high-load use; follow the manual’s instructions for the circumstances involved.

Everyday operating habits

  • Allow the engine to warm before sustained high load, hard acceleration, or demanding towing.
  • Do not treat the 278-hp rating as evidence that the Tacoma is a sports truck.
  • Stop and investigate a check-engine light, reduced-power message, misfire, unusual turbo noise, grinding, or oil-pressure warning.
  • Do not assume an intake, exhaust, software tune, lift, or tire change leaves the original towing and payload assumptions unchanged.
  • Use the owner’s manual and maintenance guide for the truck’s exact service instructions.

Reliability: what is known and what is not

The Tacoma engine is not the recalled Tundra engine

Toyota’s major machining-debris engine recall involved the V35A 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 used in certain 2022–2024 Tundra and Lexus vehicles. The 2024 Tacoma uses the T24A-FTS 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. These are different engines, and the Tacoma should not be described as being covered by the Tundra V6 engine recall.

That distinction does not prove the Tacoma is trouble-free or guarantee long-term durability. It simply prevents buyers from transferring one vehicle’s recall directly to another vehicle with a different engine. Engine-family relationships, shared technology, or claims that a component is also used in a Lexus do not guarantee identical calibration, accessories, cooling, transmission, or warranty treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The early automatic-transmission issue was real

Toyota technical service bulletin T-SB-0094-24 covers certain 2024 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles that develop a malfunction indicator light and specified transmission diagnostic codes, including faults involving the torque converter and pressure-control solenoids. When the applicable condition is confirmed, the repair procedure calls for replacing the automatic transmission assembly and torque converter.

This was handled through a technical service bulletin and a replacement process for affected vehicles, not a blanket safety recall covering every Tacoma. Read the NHTSA-hosted Toyota bulletin. Car and Driver also reported on Toyota’s replacement process for failed eight-speed automatic transmissions in certain vehicles. A VIN, symptoms, diagnostic codes, and warranty eligibility matter; the bulletin does not mean every automatic Tacoma requires a replacement.

Manual-transmission trucks were not part of that automatic-transmission replacement action, although a manual Tacoma can still have unrelated faults.

Other recalls require a VIN check

Recall records change, and campaigns are usually limited to specific production ranges and VINs. As of August 9, 2026, relevant campaigns involving some 2024 Tacomas included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Load-carrying-capacity labels: Incorrect label information can create an overloading risk.
  • Instrument-cluster software: A startup software problem may prevent critical warning messages from appearing.
  • Rear brake hoses: The campaign applies to certain 2024–2025 4WD Tacomas with Toyota 17-inch wheels. Mud and dirt buildup inside the rear wheels can damage the hoses, cause a brake-fluid leak, and reduce braking ability. Toyota advised avoiding off-road use until repair or cleaning the rear-wheel area after off-road driving. See the NHTSA brake-hose recall notice.
  • 2026 load-capacity-label campaign: Certain modified-vehicle labels listed inaccurate added-weight values, potentially creating an overloading risk. See the NHTSA recall notice.

There were also earlier labeling and instrument-cluster campaigns. Do not rely on a dated article or a generic statement that a Tacoma has no recalls. Run the VIN through Toyota’s recall lookup and the NHTSA recall database.

What long-term data cannot yet prove

The engine was new to the Tacoma in 2024, and early owner data is more useful for identifying first-year transmission, software, and fitment problems than for proving 200,000-mile durability. Available public information does not establish a Tacoma-wide 2.4L engine failure rate, an endemic Tacoma turbocharger defect, or a guaranteed service life. It also does not prove that the T24A-FTS will match the durability reputation of previous naturally aspirated Tacoma engines.

Consumer Reports’ available owner data identifies transmission and other first-year complaints, but its published 2024 Tacoma reliability page does not establish a widespread major-engine failure pattern. Individual reports of oil-filter debris, noises, or oil consumption should be investigated on their own facts; they are not a controlled estimate of failure rates.

Which 2024 Tacoma powertrain should you buy?

Choose this It makes sense when… Main compromise
SR automatic You prioritize price, basic utility, commuting, light hauling, and occasional recreation. You accept 228 hp and 243 lb-ft. It has the lowest-output tune and is not the best choice for frequent heavy towing.
278-hp gasoline automatic You want the best balance of power, cost, conventional drivetrain simplicity, and towing usefulness. It does not have the hybrid’s 465 lb-ft, and 4WD/off-road configurations can return lower fuel economy.
Manual gasoline Tacoma You value involvement and want the six-speed iMT’s rev-matching and anti-stall features. You accept 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. Availability is limited, and there is no manual i-FORCE MAX.
i-FORCE MAX You prioritize low-speed torque, climbing, towing, crawling, or the equipment offered by TRD Pro and Trailhunter. It costs more, weighs more in some configurations, requires hybrid-specific service, and is automatic-only with no 2WD option.

For most buyers, the 278-hp gasoline automatic is the sensible middle ground. It provides the new Tacoma’s useful turbo torque without paying for the hybrid system when maximum low-speed output is not necessary. The SR automatic is reasonable when price matters most, but buyers must knowingly accept its 228-hp tune.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The i-FORCE MAX is the better choice when torque and off-road performance matter more than purchase price or mechanical simplicity. It is especially easy to justify if you are already shopping a TRD Pro or Trailhunter, where the hybrid is standard. Do not buy it solely for fuel savings without comparing the purchase-price difference and the exact EPA rating.

The manual is a preference purchase, not the maximum-performance choice. It offers a more involved driving experience but makes less power and torque than the 278-hp automatic and cannot be combined with the hybrid.

When a used 2023 V6 Tacoma may be the better fit

A 2023 Tacoma may suit buyers who specifically want a naturally aspirated V6, prefer a more mature and long-established powertrain, or dislike turbocharged downsizing and first-year redesign risk. That is not a claim that every 2023 truck is categorically more reliable. It is a risk-preference alternative that gives up the fourth-generation Tacoma’s newer chassis, technology, and hybrid option.

Used 2024 Tacoma inspection checklist

  1. Run the VIN. Check both Toyota and NHTSA for open recalls and ask a Toyota dealer to confirm campaign completion.
  2. Identify the exact powertrain. Use the window sticker, build sheet, or VIN records to determine whether the truck is the 228-hp SR automatic, 270-hp manual, 278-hp gasoline automatic, or i-FORCE MAX hybrid.
  3. Ask about automatic-transmission history. Find out whether the transmission was replaced or repaired under T-SB-0094-24. Request invoices rather than relying on a seller’s description.
  4. Start it cold. Look for a rough startup, misfire, check-engine light, reduced-power message, abnormal turbo whine, grinding, or unusual smoke.
  5. Drive it cold and fully warm. Check for harsh, delayed, slipping, or inconsistent automatic shifts and verify that no warning lights appear during the drive.
  6. Inspect the oil. Check the level and ask for service records showing appropriate 0W-20 oil and regular changes.
  7. Inspect 4WD rear brake areas. Pay particular attention to the rear brake hoses and wheel interiors on trucks with Toyota 17-inch wheels that have been driven through mud or dirt.
  8. Check the load labels. Compare the load-carrying-capacity information with the truck’s actual equipment and any modification labels.
  9. Calculate real payload. Subtract passengers, bed cargo, camper or topper, winch, steel bumpers, skid plates, recovery gear, accessories, and trailer tongue weight from the door-jamb payload rating.
  10. Verify towing capacity for that configuration. Do not use 6,500 pounds unless the exact cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, and equipment support it.
  11. Inspect a hybrid carefully. Confirm hybrid-warranty eligibility and check the battery-cooling area for damage or obstruction.
  12. Evaluate modifications realistically. Larger tires, a lift, armor, racks, or a tune may change fuel economy, handling, cooling, braking, payload, and towing margins.

Bottom line for 2024 Tacoma buyers

The 2024 Tacoma’s 2.4L turbo is powerful enough for ordinary truck work and gives the redesigned pickup more low-speed torque than the outgoing V6. The crucial qualification is that the base SR automatic is a 228-hp version, the manual makes 270 hp, most gasoline automatics make 278 hp, and the hybrid’s 465 lb-ft comes with additional hardware, cost, weight, and complexity.

There is no factual basis for treating the Tacoma four-cylinder as the engine in the Tundra’s machining-debris recall. There is also no factual basis for calling the first-year Tacoma completely proven. A smart purchase includes a VIN recall check, a transmission-service inquiry, a careful test drive, and a payload calculation. If you want the best balance, choose the 278-hp gasoline automatic; if you need maximum low-speed torque or want a TRD Pro or Trailhunter, choose i-FORCE MAX; if you want naturally aspirated simplicity above all else, consider a carefully inspected 2023 V6 Tacoma.

No. Toyota specifies unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher for the stock U.S.-market 2.4L turbo engine. Premium fuel is not required. Confirm fuel instructions in the owner’s manual.

Does every 2024 Tacoma make 278 horsepower?

No. The SR automatic makes 228 hp and 243 lb-ft. Manual-transmission trucks make 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. Most nonhybrid automatic models make 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. i-FORCE MAX models generally make 326 hp and 465 lb-ft, while the 2024 Trailhunter is listed at 323 hp and 465 lb-ft.

Is the Tacoma 2.4L turbo the same engine as the recalled Tundra engine?

No. The Tundra recall involved the V35A 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 in certain Tundra and Lexus vehicles. The 2024 Tacoma uses the T24A-FTS 2.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder. The two recall situations should not be conflated.

Is the 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX a plug-in hybrid?

No. It is a conventional self-charging hybrid. It uses a 48-hp electric motor and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery, but it does not require external charging.

Can you get the 2024 Tacoma hybrid with a manual transmission or 2WD?

No. i-FORCE MAX is automatic-only and is not offered as a 2WD Tacoma. The manual transmission is available only on selected gasoline trims.

How much oil does the 2024 Tacoma 2.4L engine take?

Toyota’s owner’s manual lists approximately 5.9 U.S. quarts, or 5.6 liters, with a filter change. Add oil carefully, warm the engine, shut it off, wait approximately eight minutes, and verify the level on the dipstick rather than relying only on the capacity figure.

Is the 2024 Tacoma 2.4L turbo reliable?

It is too early to claim a definitive 200,000-mile reliability record for a powertrain introduced to the Tacoma in 2024. There is no documented broad Tacoma 2.4L engine recall in the reviewed records, but certain early automatic Tacomas were covered by a transmission technical bulletin, and some trucks have separate software, brake-hose, and labeling campaigns. Check the VIN and service history.

What automatic-transmission problem affected some 2024 Tacomas?

Toyota bulletin T-SB-0094-24 covers certain Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles with a malfunction indicator light and specified transmission fault codes, including torque-converter and pressure-control-solenoid faults. When the applicable condition is confirmed, the repair procedure calls for replacing the automatic transmission assembly and torque converter. It was not a blanket safety recall for every Tacoma.

Is i-FORCE MAX worth it just for better fuel economy?

Usually, fuel economy alone is not the strongest reason to buy it. The hybrid can improve mileage compared with some similarly equipped 4WD gasoline Tacomas, but the gain is modest. Its more compelling benefits are 465 lb-ft of system torque, stronger low-speed response, and availability in high-output off-road trims.

Is a 2023 V6 Tacoma a safer choice than a 2024 turbo Tacoma?

It may be the better fit for a buyer who specifically wants a naturally aspirated V6 and a more mature powertrain. That does not prove every 2023 Tacoma is more reliable, and it means giving up the 2024 model’s newer chassis, technology, and hybrid option.

The Bottom Line

Buy the 2024 Tacoma based on the exact powertrain, not simply the 2.4L label. The 278-hp gasoline automatic is the strongest all-around value, the SR automatic is an inexpensive light-duty option with a 228-hp tune, the manual is for buyers who prioritize involvement, and i-FORCE MAX is for those who value torque and high-end off-road capability.

The engine is not the Tundra’s recalled V6, but first-year transmission issues and other VIN-specific campaigns make a recall check and careful used-truck inspection essential.
