Here’s How Long It Would Take You to Drive All the Way Around Australia

Driving around mainland Australia usually means a 14,500–15,000 km Highway 1-based Big Lap. Allow at least three months for a selective sightseeing trip, about six months for comfort, or six to 12 months for a relaxed journey with detours.

Plan on at least three months to drive around mainland Australia if you want to stop and see places along the way. A typical Highway 1-based “Big Lap” covers about 14,500–15,000 kilometres. Six months is a more comfortable target, while six to 12 months suits travellers adding long stays, side trips or seasonal detours.

How far is the Big Lap?

There is no single official coastline route. The usual mainland circuit follows Highway 1 and connected coastal highways: south-eastern cities, the east coast to Cairns, across the Top End to Darwin and Broome, down Western Australia, across the Nullarbor toward Adelaide, then through Victoria and back toward the starting point.

Depending on the exact roads, inland diversions and national-park side trips, the loop is approximately 14,500–15,000 km. Where Down Under gives 14,500 km, while Conqueror Australia and Camplify describe the trip as roughly 15,000 km. Those figures describe a practical mainland circuit, not every possible coastal road or 4WD excursion.

How long should you allow?

Travel style Practical allowance What to expect
Fast transit About 6–10 weeks Long driving days, few detours and little recovery time; poor fit if sightseeing is the objective.
Minimum sightseeing lap About 3 months A selective loop with planned stops and limited time in each region.
Comfortable Big Lap About 6 months Rest days, weather flexibility and time for regional exploration.
Leisurely or working trip 6–12 months Extended stays, substantial side trips and the ability to move with the seasons.

Where Down Under calls three months a practical minimum, six months more realistic for sightseeing and a year common for a relaxed itinerary. Conqueror Australia recommends about 180 days so travellers are not driving constantly, and Camplify puts common trips in the three-to-12-month range.

Could you do it in three months?

Yes, but three months is best treated as the lower limit for a sightseeing-oriented lap, not a leisurely holiday. You would need to choose major regions rather than explore every town, keep detours selective and accept that some weather or road closures may force changes.

A three-month schedule averages roughly 160–170 km of route distance per day across the entire trip. That average includes rest days and sightseeing, so individual travel days would be considerably longer. The schedule becomes especially demanding when remote legs, unsealed roads or multi-day national-park visits are added.

Is six months enough to see Australia?

Six months is a strong compromise for the standard loop. It allows shorter driving days, recovery time after remote sections, additional nights in major destinations and some flexibility to wait for better weather or road conditions. It still cannot cover every inland attraction or regional road, but it avoids turning the whole journey into a series of transfers.

A six-month plan averages about 80–85 km of loop distance per calendar day. That leaves room for several days in one place, provided you do not attempt every optional detour.

How many hours would it take without stopping?

At an illustrative average of 80–100 km/h, 15,000 km represents approximately 150–188 hours of wheel time. This is simple arithmetic, not a published route-time estimate. It excludes fuel stops, meals, sleep, traffic, roadworks, weather, sightseeing, breakdowns and closures, and average speed will be lower on many regional and remote roads.

Even the official Melbourne–Sydney coastal route is listed by Visit Melbourne as 1,432 km and 20 hours. That single south-eastern segment shows why a full-lap calculation based only on highway distance understates the time required for a real trip.

What route does Highway 1 take?

Highway 1 is a connected network rather than one uniform coastal road. A common clockwise outline is:

  1. South-east: begin in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or another major city.
  2. East coast: travel through New South Wales and Queensland toward Brisbane, the Whitsundays and Cairns.
  3. Top End: continue through northern Queensland and the Northern Territory toward Darwin.
  4. Western and north-western coast: head through Kununurra, Broome and the Pilbara, depending on the chosen roads.
  5. South-west and southern coast: travel through Western Australia, cross the Nullarbor and continue toward Adelaide.
  6. Return leg: pass through Victoria and reconnect with the starting region.

Inland routes, Cape York, the Kimberley, the Red Centre and other national-park detours can add substantial distance. Some are seasonal or require a vehicle with more clearance and off-road capability than the sealed Highway 1 circuit.

How to turn the lap into a workable itinerary

Plan it as regional legs

Tourism Australia’s self-drive hub groups journeys by state and territory and by durations of 1–3, 4–6, 7–10 and 11–16 days. Use that structure to build a chain of shorter legs instead of treating Australia as one uninterrupted drive.

Build in contingency days

Remote sections can be affected by flooding, fire, storms, roadworks, mechanical problems and limited recovery services. A calendar with no spare days can unravel after one closure. Allow extra time before fixed flights, ferry bookings or work commitments.

Match the vehicle to the route

  • Sealed Highway 1 loop: a suitable passenger car, SUV, campervan or motorhome may be adequate, subject to payload and road conditions.
  • Optional remote or unsealed detours: check clearance, tyres, recovery equipment, water capacity and communications requirements; some routes are appropriate only for a capable 4WD.
  • Rental travel: confirm the hire company’s permitted roads and whether remote-area access or unsealed travel is excluded.

Check conditions before every remote leg

Tourism Australia provides Australia and safety maps and notes the country’s extensive network of roads and highways. Use each state and territory’s live road-condition service before departure. Tourism and Events Queensland’s 2025 drive map specifically directs drivers to Queensland Traffic for closures and updates.

Plan around wildlife and daylight

Tourism and Events Queensland advises extra care around dawn and dusk, when wildlife is more active. Limiting night driving is particularly important on long rural stretches, where distances between services are large and animal strikes can be difficult to avoid.

What changes the distance and duration?

  • Detours: national parks, inland towns and coastal peninsulas add kilometres quickly.
  • Season: wet-season conditions can restrict access in the Top End and northern Australia, while heat affects comfort and vehicle demands.
  • Road surface: unsealed roads reduce average speed and may require preparation, permits or a different vehicle.
  • Services: fuel, food, accommodation and repairs are widely spaced on remote legs, making stops longer and fuel-range planning essential.
  • Travel purpose: working remotely, visiting family or staying several weeks in one region can turn a three-month drive into a year-long journey.

Practical planning checklist

  • Choose a target duration: three months for a selective lap, six months for a more balanced trip, or six to 12 months for extended stays.
  • Map the sealed core route separately from optional 4WD and inland detours.
  • Check live road conditions immediately before remote departures.
  • Calculate fuel range conservatively and identify the next reliable supply point.
  • Carry communications and recovery equipment appropriate to the most remote road you will use.
  • Keep spare days for weather, closures, repairs and rest.
  • Schedule dawn and dusk driving carefully because wildlife activity is higher then.
  • Confirm vehicle and rental restrictions before committing to unsealed roads.
