It refers to a hemispherical combustion-chamber design associated with Chrysler’s V8s, beginning with the FirePower for 1951-model-year vehicles. As of October 4, 2026, Ram has announced the 5.7-liter HEMI’s return in the 2026 Ram 1500, with availability and specifications varying by market. Other V8 announcements—including a future TRX—are plans for later products, not evidence that every proposed HEMI is already on sale.
What does HEMI mean?
HEMI comes from “hemispherical,” describing the shape of the combustion chamber in the cylinder head. Chrysler’s early engineering account linked that chamber to combustion, compression and heat-loss goals intended to produce more power than earlier V8 designs. The name became closely associated with Chrysler performance engines, but it should not be read as a promise that every engine carrying the badge has identical hardware, output or purpose.
Chrysler’s first FirePower V8 using the hemispheric-head design arrived for 1951-model-year vehicles. A 1951 paper by Chrysler engineers W. E. Drinkard and M. L. Carpentier described the new V8 and reported 180 hp at 4,000 rpm and 312 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. Those are figures for the engine discussed in that paper—not ratings that apply to later HEMIs. Chrysler’s history and the SAE technical paper describe the early engineering context.
How the HEMI name changed over time
HEMI history is a lineage of distinct engines and applications, rather than one design carried forward unchanged. The classic 426 HEMI is a defining part of the Dodge and Plymouth production-car story; modern 5.7-liter truck engines and the supercharged 6.2-liter engine used in the Ram 1500 TRX serve very different roles. Displacement, induction, vehicle, era and specification all matter when comparing them.

Mopar’s Hemi Muscle Cars history focuses on Dodge and Plymouth HEMI production cars. A complete generation-by-generation technical timeline is not established by the sources cited here, so the safest way to understand the name is through specific, documented engines rather than treating “HEMI” as a single specification.
Where the 5.7-liter HEMI stands in 2026
Ram announced on June 5, 2025, that the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 would return to the 2026 Ram 1500 after the 2025 model-year lineup shifted to six-cylinder engines. Ram’s announcement describes the returning engine with eTorque, variable cam timing and cylinder deactivation. The announcement’s comparison lists 395 hp and 556 Nm for the HEMI configuration. These are manufacturer-stated figures for the announced truck and market context, not a universal specification for every 5.7-liter HEMI. Ram’s 2026 Ram 1500 information and its 2025 return announcement provide the details.

What eTorque does
eTorque is a mild-hybrid assist system paired with a conventional gasoline engine; it does not make the truck an all-electric or full-hybrid vehicle. Ram says the system replaces the traditional alternator with a belt-driven motor-generator connected to a 48-volt battery. It supports start-stop operation, can add torque in certain situations and recovers energy during braking. Ram specifies a 430 Wh lithium-ion battery and says up to 176 Nm of assist is available on initial throttle tip-in. The motor-generator’s assistance is supplemental; it does not change the engine’s basic identity as a V8.
Manufacturer-reported HEMI and Hurricane figures
Ram’s European release compares the 2026 HEMI eTorque with two 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six options. The figures below are the release’s manufacturer-reported ratings for its market and test or homologation context; fuel consumption, emissions and acceleration are not promises of results in every configuration or in real-world driving.

| Engine in Ram’s European comparison | Power | Torque | Fuel consumption | CO2 | 0–100 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.7-liter HEMI eTorque | 395 hp | 556 Nm | 16 l/100 km | 362 g/km | 7.8 seconds |
| 3.0-liter Hurricane, standard output | 420 hp | 636 Nm | 13.1 l/100 km | 311 g/km | 5.3 seconds |
| 3.0-liter Hurricane, high output | 540 hp | 706 Nm | 14.2 l/100 km | 338 g/km | 4.6 seconds |
In this particular comparison, both Hurricane versions have higher listed power and torque and lower stated fuel consumption and CO2 than the HEMI; the HEMI is slower to 100 km/h. That does not settle which engine is right for every buyer: local availability, trim, equipment, truck configuration and driving priorities affect the choice. Do not transfer these European figures to a different market or configuration. Ram’s European announcement also lists up to 5,200 kg towing and 793 kg payload for the HEMI comparison, while noting European homologation towing up to 3,500 kg. Those figures have different market and homologation qualifications and should not be treated as interchangeable global ratings.
Regional availability and specifications are not universal
On September 17, 2026, Ram announced that the 2026 Ram 1500 Rebel and Limited were available in the Middle East with a 5.7-liter HEMI rated at 395 hp and 556 Nm. For that regional release, Ram listed up to 5,266 kg towing, 748 kg payload and a 125-liter fuel tank. These are Middle East figures, not specifications that can be assumed for a North American, European or other-market truck. Ram’s Middle East announcement describes the regional configurations.

Equipment also depends on trim and configuration. The release identifies items for the Rebel including an eight-speed automatic, G/T Performance Exhaust, 360-degree camera and RamBox, with some equipment trim-specific or optional; the Limited has its own configuration. Check the local market’s specification and the actual truck’s equipment rather than assuming every listed feature is standard on every HEMI Ram.

Ram said production of the then-current supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Ram 1500 TRX ended at the close of 2023. The 2024 TRX Final Edition was announced as a worldwide run of 4,000 units, rated at 702 hp and 650 lb-ft. This marked the end of that TRX generation’s production; it did not establish that every HEMI V8 or every future TRX program had ended permanently. Ram’s Final Edition announcement gives the run size and rating.

What has Ram and Stellantis said about the HEMI’s future?
Stated production and TRX plans
In a February 26, 2026, results transcript, Stellantis said it planned to increase HEMI V8 production by 100,000 units in 2026 and referred to a TRX return with a 777-hp supercharged HEMI V8. These are company statements about plans, not confirmation that the projected production increase had been completed or that the announced TRX was already available. The Stellantis investor events and presentations page hosts company materials.
Regional 2027 announcements
Ram’s September 2026 Middle East release said the region’s V8 comeback plan includes the Ram 1500 TRX SRT and Rumble Bee in 2027. That is a forward-looking, regional announcement. It does not establish that either product is already on sale or that the same timing, nameplates or specifications apply in other markets.
Other possible V8s are not confirmed launches
At a December 2025 investor event, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa discussed possible V8 opportunities across Ram, Jeep and Dodge, naming 5.7-, 6.2- and 6.4-liter engines. He described possibilities and sequencing, not approved launches for each brand or engine. The distinction matters: an announced Ram 1500 configuration, a regional future-product plan and a corporate discussion of opportunities are different levels of certainty. Stellantis’ investor-event materials are the source for the company’s remarks.
How to compare HEMI engines without mixing eras
For any HEMI comparison, identify the model year, displacement, vehicle, market and configuration first. Then distinguish naturally aspirated from supercharged engines, and compare ratings only on a matching basis. A 1951 FirePower V8, a classic 426 production-car engine, a 5.7-liter Ram truck V8 and a supercharged 6.2-liter TRX engine are not interchangeable merely because the HEMI name connects them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use a cited rating only for the engine and application to which its source assigns it.
- Keep horsepower and torque units intact: the European 2026 Ram comparison uses Nm, while the TRX Final Edition announcement uses lb-ft.
- Keep market-specific towing, payload, fuel consumption and emissions figures attached to their market and rating basis.
- Separate vehicles announced as available from production history, stated plans and unconfirmed opportunities.
The available manufacturer figures do not establish independent real-world fuel economy, reliability, repair rates or long-term ownership costs, so those questions require evidence beyond these specifications.
