Harley-Davidson’s headline 60% revenue decline was real—but it applied to the company’s motorcycle division in the fourth quarter of 2024, not to the entire corporation. HDMC motorcycle revenue fell from $583 million to $231 million, while consolidated Harley-Davidson revenue declined 35% to $688 million.
The results were also worse than market expectations. Harley-Davidson reported a $117 million quarterly net loss, or $0.93 per diluted share, as motorcycle shipments dropped sharply while the company worked to reduce inventory held by dealers.

What actually fell 60%?
The 60% figure describes motorcycle revenue at Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HDMC) during the fourth quarter of 2024. It does not describe Harley-Davidson, Inc.’s total revenue.

| HDMC motorcycle revenue | $583 million | $231 million | Down 60% |
| HDMC total revenue | $792 million | $420 million | Down 47% |
| Consolidated Harley-Davidson revenue | $1.053 billion | $688 million | Down 35% |
| Full-year consolidated revenue | $5.836 billion | $5.187 billion | Down 11% |
HDMC is the core motorcycle operation. Harley-Davidson, Inc. also includes Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS) and LiveWire. That broader corporate structure is why the 60% motorcycle-revenue figure should not be presented as a 60% collapse in company-wide sales.

The quarterly loss widened dramatically
Harley-Davidson posted a consolidated operating loss of $193 million in Q4 2024, compared with a $21 million operating loss in the same quarter of 2023. The company recorded a net loss attributable to Harley-Davidson of $117 million, equal to a diluted loss of $0.93 per share.
| Consolidated result | Q4 2023 | Q4 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating income/(loss) | $(21) million | $(193) million |
| Net income/(loss) | $26 million | $(117) million |
| Diluted earnings/(loss) per share | $0.18 | $(0.93) |
The motorcycle division itself reported a $214 million operating loss, versus a $44 million loss a year earlier. Harley-Davidson attributed the deterioration to lower shipment volumes, an unfavorable product mix, negative operating leverage and adverse foreign-exchange effects.
Why were motorcycle shipments down so much?
HDMC shipped 14,010 motorcycles worldwide in Q4 2024, a 53% year-over-year decline. That number is much worse than the 15% fall in global retail sales, which reached 25,700 motorcycles during the quarter.

The difference matters. Shipments measure motorcycles moving from Harley-Davidson to dealers. Retail sales measure motorcycles sold by dealers to customers. Harley-Davidson said it was deliberately reducing dealer inventory, so it shipped substantially fewer motorcycles than dealers sold.

- Demand weakened. Motorcycles are discretionary purchases, and the company cited high interest rates and lower consumer confidence.
- Dealers were carrying excess inventory. Reducing that stock required Harley-Davidson to cut wholesale shipments, even though retail sales did not fall as sharply.
- Lower volume hurt profitability. Fewer units spread fixed manufacturing and operating costs across a smaller sales base.
- Product mix and currency added pressure. Harley-Davidson reported an unfavorable mix and adverse foreign-exchange effects in the motorcycle division.
Sales fell across every major region
Retail demand declined in all of Harley-Davidson’s reported regions during Q4 2024:
| Region | Q4 retail-sales change |
|---|---|
| North America | Down 13% |
| Europe, Middle East and Africa | Down 7% |
| Asia-Pacific | Down 26% |
| Latin America | Down 7% |
Asia-Pacific was the weakest region, but North America remains especially important to Harley-Davidson’s business. For the full year, global retail sales declined 7%, while HDMC shipments fell 17% to 148,862 motorcycles.
How much worse was the result than expected?
Market expectations were below the company’s actual result. A market-data summary citing LSEG put expected HDMC revenue at approximately $464.88 million, compared with reported revenue of about $420.49 million. The reported $0.93 per-share loss also exceeded the expected loss of $0.66 per share.
Those consensus estimates came from analysts and market data; they were not Harley-Davidson’s own guidance. The comparison explains the “worse than expected” wording: investors were already anticipating a weak quarter, but the reported revenue and loss still missed those estimates.

What Harley-Davidson expected for 2025
For 2025, management forecast HDMC revenue ranging from flat to down 5%. It expected an HDMC operating margin of 7% to 8%. The company also forecast a 10% to 15% decline in HDFS operating income.
LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s electric-motorcycle business, was expected to sell between 1,000 and 1,500 motorcycles while recording an operating loss of $70 million to $80 million. That forecast highlighted the continuing cost of developing and supporting the electric-motorcycle operation while volumes remained small.
Is Harley-Davidson still suffering a 60% revenue decline?
Not according to the latest results cited in the company’s subsequent reporting. The 60% decline belongs to Q4 2024 and should not be treated as a current, unchanged trend.

Harley-Davidson also raised its full-year 2026 HDMC operating-income guidance to between $10 million and $50 million, compared with its previous range of a $40 million loss to a $10 million profit. The recovery was not complete: consolidated net income still declined 26% year over year in Q2 2026, partly because of ongoing restructuring at HDFS.

The Q4 2024 report showed a business trying to correct its dealer inventory position during a period of weak consumer demand. Cutting shipments can make a future quarter look especially poor, but it may prevent dealers from becoming overloaded with unsold motorcycles and relying on heavier discounting.
The immediate cost was severe: HDMC revenue nearly halved, the motorcycle operation lost $214 million, and the consolidated company swung from a quarterly profit to a $117 million net loss. The longer-term question was whether inventory discipline and a more favorable demand environment could restore volume without damaging pricing.
For readers comparing Harley-Davidson with other automakers or powersports companies, the key distinction is between wholesale shipments, dealer retail sales, divisional revenue and consolidated revenue. Mixing those measures produces the misleading impression that all of Harley-Davidson’s business fell 60%.
