The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport pairs a newly standard turbocharged four-cylinder with a refreshed cabin, but its impressive power figures do not guarantee a sporty-feeling drive. Car and Driver found it comfortable and quiet, yet less lively than the Honda Passport. That gap between the numbers and the driving impression is the real problem with high expectations—not evidence that every driver will find it underpowered.
What changed on the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport?
Volkswagen introduced the refreshed Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport at the Chicago Auto Show on February 10, 2023. The Cross Sport is the five-seat version; the larger Atlas has seven seats. For 2024, Volkswagen revised the interior and added a standard 12-inch display, Digital Cockpit Pro, IQ.Drive driver-assistance technology, wireless charging, and App-Connect. These are manufacturer-announced specifications and equipment claims, not independent assessments of quality or effectiveness. Volkswagen’s launch announcement has the model details.
The previous engine choices gave way to one turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder. Volkswagen rates it at 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, and says towing capacity remains 5,000 pounds. Those figures look substantial on paper; they do not, by themselves, tell you how eager the SUV feels in everyday driving. Volkswagen did not provide a measured real-world fuel-economy result in its announcement.
How does it drive?
Car and Driver reports a comfortable ride and a “wonderfully quiet cabin.” Its reviewer also found the Cross Sport less lively than the Honda Passport during the drive. That is one outlet’s subjective comparison, not a universal finding or a measured acceleration test. Still, it illustrates the distinction between strong rated output and a driving character that may not feel especially energetic. Car and Driver’s review provides its impressions and specifications.

Consumer Reports describes the 2024 Cross Sport as pleasant-driving and says it does not give up too much functionality for its styling. Its road-test assessment draws on testing of a 2024 Atlas SE with the same turbo-four and a 2020 Atlas Cross Sport; the outlet considered the refreshed Cross Sport too similar to warrant buying another example for a separate test. That context matters: the assessment is informative, but it is not a fresh, standalone test of a 2024 Cross Sport. Consumer Reports’ road-test report explains its assessment.
What fuel economy should you expect?
Car and Driver lists the following EPA estimates. They are estimates, not that outlet’s measured real-world results for the new-engine Cross Sport: it said it still needed to run that model through its 75-mph highway loop.

Consumer Reports distinguishes its Atlas test result from its expectation that the Cross Sport would be similar, so that expectation should not be treated as a measured 2024 Cross Sport figure. Your actual consumption can differ with traffic, weather, route, driving style, load, and vehicle condition.
Is the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport reliable?
Consumer Reports characterizes the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport’s reliability as about average compared with other cars from the same model year. That is a comparative assessment, not a claim about a verified failure rate for every 2024 vehicle. Which recalls should a used-car shopper check?
Two official NHTSA notices in the available record involve some Atlas Cross Sport vehicles, but neither establishes that every 2024 vehicle is affected. Check the specific vehicle by VIN and ask the seller for documentation showing whether any applicable remedy was completed.
- Recall 24V-464, acknowledged June 25, 2024: Includes 2020–2024 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles and concerns a potential front passenger air-bag deployment problem. Verify whether the VIN is included and whether the campaign is complete. Read the NHTSA notice.
- Recall 24V-723, acknowledged October 1, 2024: Includes certain 2024 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The notice says an incorrect spring retainer in the brake master cylinder may obstruct a brake-fluid port; dealers will replace the master cylinder on affected vehicles without charge. Confirm inclusion and remedy status by VIN. Read the NHTSA notice.

- Drive the exact vehicle: Decide whether its acceleration feel suits you; the horsepower and torque ratings cannot settle that question.
- Assess comfort and cabin noise on your usual roads: These are strengths in the reviewed driving impressions, but comfort is personal.
