Verdict: The Halfords Assist is a basic, single-speed electric bike that may suit short, practical rides where a rack and simple controls matter more than gears, folding or a clearly established long range. But “Assist Hybrid” can refer to different bikes: Tech Advisor reviewed an older model in 2019, while Halfords now lists a separate 20-inch Assist. The older review is useful as historical context, not as a test of the current bike.
Which Halfords Assist does this review cover?
The Tech Advisor review matching this article’s title was published on 23 December 2019 and covers an older Halfords Assist Hybrid. Halfords’ current UK listing for the Assist 20-inch Wheel Electric Hybrid Bike is a different model. Its specifications should not be mixed with the 2019 bike’s details.

There is also a current Assist Step-Thru, a separate model with a low-step alloy frame and 26-inch wheels. It is not the 20-inch bike reviewed below. Check the exact model name and listing before buying, especially if comparing battery capacity, wheel size or range.
What the current 20-inch Assist offers
For the current UK listing, SKU 429315, Halfords specifies a steel, unisex, one-size shopper-style frame, rigid steel fork and 20-inch wheels. It has single-speed gearing with a 2.56 gear ratio, V-brakes and a front Bafang hub motor rated at 32Nm. Assistance is provided through five modes on a Bafang LCD display, up to 15.5mph.

The rack and mudguards make the specification practical for shopping or everyday essentials, but Halfords does not confirm compatibility with a particular pannier bag. Check the rack and bag fit before purchasing accessories.
How far can it go on a charge?
Halfords’ current 20-inch listing is inconsistent: the overview gives 20–30 miles, the descriptive copy says up to 30 miles, and the specification table gives a maximum of 40 miles. Those figures do not establish a dependable real-world distance, and the highest figure should not be treated as the expected range for an ordinary ride.

Halfords says range varies with rider and luggage weight, assistance mode, terrain and inclines, temperature, tyre pressure and wind. If your journey depends on reaching a destination without recharging, use the lower figure as a cautious planning reference and allow for conditions that increase battery use; the listing does not provide a verified range for a particular rider or route.

Tech Advisor’s review of the older Assist Hybrid called it basic but said it took the pain out of cycling uphill. In the reviewer’s ride, assistance began quickly when pedalling started and helped on hills, but the motor was slower than expected, struggled to maintain a decent pace on that route and sometimes felt uneven. These are one reviewer’s impressions of the older bike, not a test of today’s 20-inch model.

That earlier bike had a one-size steel shopper-style frame, 20-inch wheels, single-speed gearing, a front hub motor, removable rear-mounted battery, V-brakes, mudguards and a stand. It did not fold. The reviewer described three assistance levels, a 6km/h walk mode and assistance cut-off at 15.5mph, and said the 18kg bike remained rideable with a depleted battery, though its weight could be felt on hills.
The older review also compared that generation’s Hybrid and Assist Deluxe: it reported a 4.8Ah battery for the Hybrid and 7Ah for the Deluxe, with then-claimed ranges of up to 20 and 30 miles respectively. The review cautioned that range depended on temperature, hills and rider weight, and described those figures as best-case rather than average. These are historical details, not current specifications, prices or availability.

Who is the current Assist best suited to?
The current listing’s combination of a single speed, front hub motor and fitted rack points toward simple, shorter utility rides rather than a bike for every commute or terrain. The lack of gears is a significant consideration if your route has sustained climbs: electric assistance does not add a wider mechanical gear range, and the 2019 reviewer’s hill experience cannot predict how the current model will perform for you.

- Consider it if: you want a straightforward bike for local trips, value the fitted rack and mudguards, and can try the one-size frame for fit.
- Look beyond it if: you need folding for storage or transport, want multiple gears for varied climbs, need a verified range for a long route, or require a frame size tailored to your measurements.
- Compare alternatives on: frame fit and model generation, battery capacity and route-appropriate range, motor placement and assistance, gearing, wheel size, brakes, fitted lights and carrying equipment, total weight, warranty, local servicing, and current price.
Check before you buy
- Confirm the model: make sure the listing is for the Assist 20-inch Wheel Electric Hybrid Bike (SKU 429315), not the separate Assist Step-Thru or the older bike covered by the 2019 review.
- Check fit and handling: the current listing describes a one-size frame and approximate 22kg weight. If possible, try the bike with your usual riding position and consider whether you will need to lift or carry it.
- Match range to your route: ask Halfords about the discrepancy between 20–30 miles, up to 30 miles and maximum 40 miles. Do not plan around the largest figure without confirming what it means for your use.
- Review support terms: Halfords lists optional one- or three-year CycleCare plans and provides an Assist e-bike manuals resource. Check the current plan terms, price and service availability at the point of purchase.
