Charge your electric scooter with the charger supplied for that exact model, plugged into a suitable, undamaged outlet and used according to the scooter and charger manuals. Stay awake and nearby while it charges, keep the battery and charger uncovered, and unplug when the cycle finishes. If the charger is missing or damaged, ask the scooter maker for a replacement tested and approved for your scooter.
How do I charge an electric scooter at home?
- Check the manuals and charger label. Confirm the charging instructions and the local electrical system specified for your scooter and charger before plugging in. Battery and charger requirements differ by model.
- Inspect the equipment and outlet. Do not use a damaged, loose, or unusually hot outlet, plug, cable, charger, or battery. Use a suitable wall outlet directly where practical; do not overload the outlet or an extension lead.
- Choose a safe place. Keep the scooter on a stable, hard, flat surface, with the charger and battery uncovered and away from combustible materials where possible. Never charge where the scooter or cable blocks an exit.
- Charge while present and awake. Remain nearby and alert throughout the charging cycle. Do not charge while asleep or away.
- Unplug when charging is complete. Follow the maker’s instructions for charging and storage. If the battery is hot after intensive use, let it cool as directed by the manufacturer before charging.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) gives the same central instruction: “Each micromobility battery has specific charging needs that require the use of a compatible charger.” Its guidance says to use the supplied or recommended charger, remain present, and unplug when charging is done (CPSC micromobility charging guidance; CPSC warning, September 5, 2024).

Can I charge my electric scooter from a normal wall outlet?
In the United States, use a wall outlet only if its electrical supply matches the input requirements on your charger and the scooter maker’s instructions. There is no single household voltage or circuit rating that applies to every scooter. Plug types and household electrical systems vary by country, so follow the local system and the exact charger specifications rather than relying on a general rule.
Avoid outlets that are damaged, loose, hot, or already carrying too much load. If a breaker repeatedly trips or you suspect a wiring problem, stop charging and consult a qualified electrician; do not make wiring changes yourself. Government safety guidance advises against overloading sockets and charging leads (UK government e-scooter and e-bike battery safety guidance).

Can I use an extension cord?
A direct connection to a suitable wall outlet is preferable where practical. If the scooter maker allows an extension lead and one is necessary, use one suitably rated for the connected load, in good condition, and positioned so it cannot be damaged or create a trip or escape hazard. Do not overload it or connect multiple leads together.
There is no universal extension-cord rating for scooter chargers. CPSC notes that relevant cord safety characteristics include minimum wire size, strain relief, proper polarization, and continuity; requirements can differ for indoor and outdoor cords (CPSC extension-cord guidance, November 18, 2015). That guidance is not a blanket rating for every cord and does not establish that a power strip is an appropriate substitute.
Can I leave my scooter charging overnight?
No. CPSC says to charge while present, never while sleeping or away, and unplug when charging is complete. Stay awake and nearby for the full cycle rather than relying on an automatic cutoff as a reason to leave the scooter unattended (CPSC micromobility charging guidance; CPSC public-safety announcement, September 4, 2025).

Choose a dry, secure location that does not obstruct an exit. Keep the battery and charger uncovered, and place them away from combustible or flammable materials where possible. NFPA’s 2026 tip sheet recommends charging large battery-powered items such as scooters outside when possible, on a hard, flat surface, and without blocking exits (NFPA e-bike and e-scooter safety tip sheet). Charge outdoors only if conditions are dry and secure and the scooter maker permits it.

Can I use a universal scooter charger?
Do not choose a charger just because its connector fits or it is advertised as universal. CPSC warns that a universal charger can fit a device yet still be incompatible with its battery. Between January 1, 2023, and May 16, 2024, CPSC received 156 reports of fire and thermal incidents involving universal micromobility chargers; that is the agency’s count of reports received during that period, not an incidence rate or a complete count of fires (CPSC warning, September 5, 2024).
If your supplied charger is missing or damaged, contact the scooter manufacturer for a replacement. Before buying, confirm that the replacement is tested and approved for safe use with your exact scooter model. Do not borrow another scooter’s charger unless the manufacturer confirms it is compatible.
How long should an electric scooter charge?
Use the charging time and completion guidance in the manual for your exact model. Charging time varies, and there is no universal duration established for all electric scooters. Do not leave it charging unattended to estimate when it will be full; stay present and unplug when the charge cycle finishes.

Stop using and charging the battery if it becomes unusually hot, changes color or shape, leaks, emits an unusual odor, smokes, or no longer holds charge. Do not try to diagnose or repair a failing battery yourself; contact the scooter manufacturer or a qualified service provider for next steps. If the battery is smoking or burning, leave the area and contact emergency services. Warning signs are listed in UK government battery guidance and NFPA safety material (UK government guidance; NFPA safety tip sheet).
