At the currently listed UK price of £60.99, its strongest selling points are its 300g weight, compact 151 × 89 × 28mm body, USB output and simple clamp-protection system. The important limitation is that Halfords rates it for a healthy but partially depleted battery and says it will not jump-start a battery below 3V. It is convenient insurance against leaving the lights on, not a universal cure for a failed battery.
There is also a model-version trap: older reviews describe a 300A version, whereas the current Halfords listing specifies 400A peak and 200A starting current. This review keeps those claims separate rather than treating an older test as proof of the current specification.
Halfords Advanced 2L Jump Starter: quick verdict
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Will it start a car? | It has credible independent evidence starting a 1.6-litre petrol Ford Focus, and Halfords rates the current model for petrol and diesel engines up to 2 litres. That remains a suitability claim, not a guarantee in every condition. |
| Who is it for? | Owners of small petrol cars, smaller diesels within the limit, motorcycles and compatible 12V Start/Stop vehicles. |
| What is the biggest limitation? | Halfords says it will not operate when the vehicle battery is below 3V. |
| Is it a battery charger? | No. It provides a high-current boost for starting; it does not restore a battery to full charge or repair it. |
| Is it genuinely portable? | Yes. At 300g and 28mm thick, it is much easier to store than a conventional lead-acid booster pack. |
| Would I buy it? | Yes, for a small everyday car where glovebox-sized emergency equipment matters. Choose the 3L model or a larger pack for a bigger engine or more starting margin. |
Buy it for: compactness, occasional jump-starting, small 12V vehicles and emergency USB power.
Do not buy it for: engines above Halfords’ 2L recommendation, a battery that has fallen below 3V, repeated battery failures, tyre inflation, mains-powered equipment or proper battery maintenance.

Halfords’ category page listed the pack at £60.99 when checked. It also showed a 4.3/5 retailer rating from 123 reviews, while the direct product page displayed 152 reviews without exposing the same score. Those figures are time-sensitive and internally inconsistent, so they should be treated as retailer feedback rather than definitive performance evidence. Check the current Halfords listing for the price and latest review count before buying.
Which product is this review about?
The product is the Halfords Advanced 2L Jump Starter Powerbank, SKU 191187. Older editorial coverage often calls it the Halfords Advanced Lithium Jump Starter, but the SKU is the clearest way to identify the product.
The current official listing describes a lithium jump starter for 12V cars and motorcycles up to 2L, including petrol, diesel and Start/Stop applications. It is not a device for an electric vehicle’s high-voltage traction battery. In a hybrid, it can only be relevant to the separate 12V auxiliary system, and the vehicle handbook must specify how that system should be accessed and connected.
The product name should not be confused with a claim that it contains enough energy to recharge a 2-litre car battery. The 2L figure is Halfords’ engine-size suitability guide. Starting demand also depends on whether the engine is petrol or diesel, the battery’s condition, outside temperature, oil viscosity, starter motor and the vehicle’s own electrical system.

These figures come from the current Halfords product page. Halfords does not publish the test duration or standard behind the 200A starting-current figure, so it should not be treated as directly comparable with a formal cold-cranking-amp rating from a car battery.
The 6,000mAh figure also should not be compared directly with a phone power bank’s advertised capacity. Battery makers can quote capacity at different internal cell voltages and do not necessarily report the same usable energy after conversion losses. The product page does not provide a watt-hour figure, so the USB capacity cannot be calculated reliably from 6,000mAh alone.
The 300A versus 400A model discrepancy
The most important problem with existing coverage is that it appears to mix specifications from different versions or production runs.
- The current Halfords listing specifies 400A peak and 200A starting current.
- The prominent T3 review, updated on 16 August 2022, describes a 6,000mAh, 300A version.
- Expert Reviews also describes a 300A version in its test coverage.
The public pages do not establish whether this is a revised specification, a different production run or inconsistent retailer data. The sensible approach is to use 400A peak and 200A starting current for the current SKU 191187, while labelling the older 300A hands-on results by reviewer and date. It would be inaccurate to say that the current pack was tested with exactly the same hardware in 2022.
There are similar uncertainties around the physical details. T3 calls the charging input micro-USB, but the current product imagery appears to show a differently shaped input. The older review also refers to four blue charge LEDs, while the current image shows a different-looking indicator arrangement. Do not rely on an old review for the connector type, LED count or exact button behaviour; check the unit and instructions supplied with the current SKU.
T3 reported a charge time of about two hours, but that is an observation from the older review unit, not a current official Halfords specification. The current product page does not expose a clearly linked downloadable manual containing exact charging times, button timings or any approved override procedure.
Size, leads and everyday practicality
This is where the 2L pack makes the strongest case for itself. At 300g and only 28mm thick, it is closer to a large phone power bank than a traditional roadside booster. Halfords markets it as glovebox equipment, and it is much more realistic to keep this pack in a small car than a heavy lead-acid unit.
That portability does not mean the whole kit occupies only 151 × 89 × 28mm. The clamps and cable must be stored with the main unit, and the available lead length is a genuine limitation. Expert Reviews measured the leads at approximately 28cm from the plug to the clamp and described them as somewhat lightweight. T3 also criticised the short leads.
Recommended Free Tools
Short leads are manageable when the battery and a suitable earth point are near the front of the engine bay. They become awkward when the battery is under a cover, in the boot or close to an inaccessible jump point. Before buying, check where your vehicle’s designated positive and earth points are. The pack must be able to sit securely away from belts, fans, hot exhaust components and the edge of the engine bay while the clamps are connected.

Two 5V/2A USB output ports are packed on this jump starter that can be applied at the same time for charging, 50% faster than a standard charger.
- PACKED WITH LED EMERGENCY LIGHT AND BONUS FEATURES : the ET03 car jump starter is packed with a 500-lumens LED flashlight to provide help in darkness or for emergency situations that support three variable light modes (stable, strobe, and SOS). There are more features included such as an LCD screen to check the battery status, a wide working temperature from 14℉ to 140℉, and 24 months long standby time.
- 10 INTELLIGENT SAFETY PROTECTIONS: This jump starter battery pack is super safe to use with 10 intelligent safety protections against overcharge, short circuits, reverse polarity, power surging and sparking, and so forth. You can detect the errors by simply checking the lights and the beep sound from the smart jumper clamps.
The kit includes a charging cable, but Halfords does not list a mains adapter as included. Expert Reviews and T3 likewise found a USB charging lead rather than a wall charger in their boxes. If you do not already have a suitable USB power source, factor in the cost and remember to test the charging arrangement before an emergency.
USB power-bank and torch features
The USB output is useful for an emergency phone top-up, especially if the car battery is too weak to power its accessories. Halfords lists output options of 5V/3A or 9V/2A, with one USB output. The built-in LED torch is similarly useful when locating terminals or checking a dark engine bay.
These are secondary features, not reasons to treat the unit as a high-capacity travel power bank. Its main job is delivering a short burst of high current to a starter motor. The current listing does not give a watt-hour capacity or promise how many phone charges are available, so expectations should remain modest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no tyre inflator, 12V accessory socket or mains inverter. If those features matter, a larger multi-function pack is more appropriate, although it will be far less portable.
Will it actually start a car?
What independent testing found
Expert Reviews attempted to start a 1.6-litre Ford Focus with a flat battery five times, leaving two minutes between attempts. It reported that the car started on each occasion and that the pack still displayed full charge afterwards. The reviewer measured the leads at about 28cm and noted the absence of a mains adapter.
That is useful evidence that this type of pack can handle a small petrol car and several starting attempts. It is not a guarantee for every 2-litre vehicle, nor is it a test of the current 400A/200A-listed version. It also does not establish performance with a battery below Halfords’ 3V threshold, a cold diesel engine or a battery that has failed internally.
T3’s older hands-on review found the unit compact and straightforward to use. It reported a green indication when connected correctly, a red light and alarm for incorrect connection, and no shock during connection. That supports the usefulness of the protection system, but it does not make jump-starting risk-free. Incorrect jump points, damaged batteries, short circuits and vehicle-specific procedures remain hazards.
What the 2L rating really tells you
For a small petrol hatchback with a battery weakened by lights being left on, the Halfords claim and the independent 1.6-litre test point in the same direction: this is a credible application.
A diesel is less certain. Diesels generally need more starting effort than petrol engines of similar displacement, particularly in cold weather. Halfords does advertise diesel support up to 2L, but engine displacement alone does not determine starting current. A well-maintained 1.6-litre diesel with a partially discharged battery is a different challenge from a cold 2-litre diesel with an ageing battery and thickened oil.
For an engine above 2L, a large diesel, van, SUV or commercial vehicle, the 2L label provides no useful margin. Buy a larger booster instead of treating the maximum rating as a target to exceed.
Can it start a completely dead battery?
Not necessarily, and this is the point most likely to be lost in the phrase ‘flat battery’. Halfords specifically says the unit will not jump-start a battery below 3V. A battery can appear dead because it will not turn the engine over while still measuring above that threshold, but a deeply discharged or failed battery may be below it and may not allow the pack’s protection circuitry to activate.
Do not describe the 3V limit as proof that the pack never works on a completely dead battery; ‘completely dead’ is not a precise electrical measurement. The accurate statement is that the manufacturer specifies a 3V minimum. If the battery is below that level, do not bypass the protection unless the current Halfords instructions explicitly provide an approved procedure. The supplied product instructions and vehicle handbook take priority.
A pack also cannot overcome every battery fault. A shorted cell, badly damaged battery, corroded connection, failed starter motor or wiring problem may prevent a successful start even when the voltage appears suitable.

How to use it safely
This is a general procedure, not a replacement for the instructions supplied with SKU 191187 or the vehicle owner’s handbook. Modern cars can have separate jump points, battery-monitoring systems and manufacturer-specific earthing requirements.
Before connecting
- Confirm that the vehicle uses a 12V system and is within Halfords’ petrol/diesel engine-size guidance. Do not connect this pack to an EV’s high-voltage traction system.
- Do not attempt to boost a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, visibly damaged or severely corroded. Stop and obtain professional help if the battery or cables look unsafe.
- Switch off the ignition, lights, infotainment, heater and other electrical accessories. Apply the parking brake and keep jewellery, loose clothing, tools and hands away from moving parts.
- Make sure the jump starter is charged. A pack that has been left unused for a long time should not be assumed to be ready simply because it was charged months ago; check its indicator periodically and recharge it after use according to the supplied instructions.
- Place the pack on a stable surface. The AA warns against placing a booster pack on the engine, where vibration could make it fall.
Connecting the clamps
- Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal or the vehicle manufacturer’s designated positive jump point.
- Connect the black clamp to a suitable unpainted earth point on the engine or chassis if the vehicle handbook specifies one. Do not automatically use the battery’s negative terminal, particularly on Start/Stop vehicles where the manufacturer may provide a separate earth point.
- Connect the clamp assembly to the jump starter in the order stated in the current Halfords instructions. T3’s older review connected the cable assembly first, then the red and black clamps, but that timing should not be assumed to be the current universal procedure.
- Check the indicator. T3 reported a green correct-connection indication and a red light with an alarm for incorrect connection on its review unit. If the pack signals a fault, switch it off, disconnect it and recheck the polarity and earth point rather than trying to force it to operate.
- Start the car normally using short attempts. If the engine does not fire promptly, stop rather than holding the starter continuously or making repeated prolonged attempts.
The clamp system is intended to make incorrect connection easier to identify and to protect against at least the incorrect-connection condition described by Halfords. ‘Safe Connect’ is not protection against every mistake, short circuit, unsuitable vehicle or defective battery.
Disconnecting after the engine starts
Published guidance is not completely consistent. T3’s older review says to remove the black clamp and then the red clamp while the engine is running. The AA’s booster-pack guidance says to let the engine run briefly, switch off the boost pack, switch off the engine and remove the leads in reverse order. The RAC’s portable-pack guidance similarly says to keep the engine running for about five minutes, switch off the engine and pack, remove the leads, then restart the engine.
Do not silently combine those instructions. Follow the supplied Halfords instructions and your vehicle handbook first. If neither gives a different procedure, the conservative roadside sequence is to let the engine run briefly, switch off the booster and vehicle, then disconnect the black clamp before the red clamp. Keep the clamps from touching each other or any metal part while connected.
What to do if it does not start
- Stop cranking and switch off the pack.
- Check that the clamps are firmly attached to clean, correct contact points and that red is positive.
- Check whether the pack is signalling an incorrect connection or whether the vehicle has a separate designated jump point.
- Consider the 3V limitation. A heavily discharged battery may be below the activation threshold and should not be bypassed without an approved manufacturer procedure.
- If the vehicle still will not start, stop repeated attempts. The fault may be a failed battery, starter motor, alternator, cable or another electrical component.
A jump starter only addresses the immediate lack of starting power. If the vehicle repeatedly needs a boost, or starts and then stops, the battery and charging system need testing. The RAC notes that repeated jump-starting can indicate an underlying battery or electrical fault.
After a successful start: it is not a charger
The Halfords pack supplies starting assistance; it does not properly charge the vehicle battery. Once the engine is running, the alternator may replenish some of the lost charge, but a very low or ageing battery may need a proper mains battery charger and a battery-health test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Halfords, the AA and the RAC recommend allowing the car to run or driving normally for roughly 30 minutes where possible after a jump-start. That is not a repair and may not be enough after a deep discharge. Avoid switching the engine off immediately in an inconvenient location, and arrange a proper charge or inspection if the battery has been repeatedly depleted.
Important limitations
The 3V cut-off
This is the main reason not to market the 2L as a solution for every flat battery. The pack is designed for a battery that is still electrically present but partially depleted. It is not the right tool for a battery that has been left discharged for a long time, has a failed cell or measures below 3V.
Short, lightweight leads
Approximately 28cm of lead from the connection point to the clamp is restrictive on some vehicles. It can make it difficult to reach a remote battery or the correct chassis earth while keeping the pack safely away from moving and hot components. The small size is a benefit in storage, but it is partly achieved by keeping the cable arrangement compact.
No published temperature range
The current Halfords page does not publish an operating-temperature range. Cold weather reduces battery performance and increases the effort needed to start an engine, so a fully charged pack is especially important in winter. There is no evidence in the supplied research to promise reliable operation at a particular sub-zero temperature.
Heat and long-term storage in a car
Halfords markets the product for glovebox storage, but a parked car in direct summer sun can become an extreme environment for any lithium-ion battery. General EPA guidance advises avoiding prolonged extreme heat and cold. In practical terms, keep the unit out of direct sunlight, inspect it periodically and take it indoors during prolonged extreme heat where that is feasible.
Do not use or charge the pack if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells abnormal or shows impact or water damage. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and enter thermal runaway when damaged, overheated or exposed to unsuitable conditions; the FAA’s lithium-battery safety guidance explains these risks.
No stated maintenance interval
The current Halfords listing does not say that the pack must be recharged monthly, quarterly or annually. Check the charge indicator periodically, recharge it after use and follow the supplied instructions. Do not transfer the approximately 1–2% monthly self-discharge claim shown on Halfords’ NOCO GB20 listing to this Halfords model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special cases: diesel, Start/Stop, hybrids and EVs
Diesel cars
Halfords includes diesel engines up to 2L in the product’s suitability claim, so a small diesel is not automatically excluded. It is nevertheless the more demanding use case. Cold temperatures, oil viscosity, glow-plug operation, battery condition and starter demand all affect the result. If the diesel is close to 2L, routinely used in cold conditions or has a weak battery rather than a simple low-charge problem, a larger booster gives more sensible margin.

Start/Stop and AGM-equipped vehicles
Halfords explicitly labels SKU 191187 as suitable for Start/Stop applications. That does not remove the need to use the vehicle’s designated jump points. Start/Stop vehicles can have battery-monitoring and earthing arrangements that differ from a basic older car. The AA recommends using an appropriate earth point rather than automatically attaching the negative clamp to the battery terminal. Follow the handbook, especially if the car uses an AGM or other specialist battery.
Hybrid vehicles
A hybrid may be jump-started through its 12V auxiliary battery if the vehicle manufacturer permits it. This pack cannot recharge the hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery. The RAC advises checking the hybrid’s handbook and also warns against using a hybrid as the donor vehicle for another car. If a hybrid’s 12V system is inaccessible or the handbook specifies a recovery procedure, use roadside assistance instead.
Electric vehicles
This is not an EV charger. It will not recharge an EV’s driving battery or make an EV mobile when its high-voltage battery is empty. It may be relevant only to a separate 12V auxiliary battery, and only where the EV manufacturer explicitly permits a jump-start procedure.
Halfords Advanced 2L versus the alternatives
| Need | Most appropriate option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small, light emergency pack for a car up to 2L | Halfords Advanced 2L, SKU 191187 | 300g, compact dimensions, 400A peak/200A starting-current listing, USB output and torch. Listed at £60.99 when checked. |
| More margin for a larger engine | Halfords Advanced 3L | Listed with 600A peak, 300A starting current, 12,000mAh capacity, 480g weight and 166 × 91 × 33mm dimensions. The category price was £90.99 when checked. |
| Inflator, inverter and 12V accessory power | Halfords 6-in-1 Jump Starter Power Pack | Adds an air compressor, 100W inverter, 12V socket and LED light, but weighs 7.7kg. It is a different kind of product, not a portable alternative to the 2L. |
| Petrol engine up to 4L and a specialist-brand alternative | NOCO GB20 | Halfords lists a 20-start claim, petrol engines up to 4L, USB output, flashlight and reverse-polarity/spark-proof protection. It is listed as unsuitable for diesel engines, carries a one-year manufacturer warranty and cost £95.95 when checked. |
| Recharging or maintaining a weak battery | A proper smart battery charger | A jump starter supplies starting assistance; it does not replace a charger or diagnose a failing battery. |

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should you buy the Halfords Advanced 2L?
Buy it if you drive a typical petrol hatchback, compact saloon or small SUV within the 2L limit; want something light enough to keep with the car; and mainly need protection against an occasionally low battery caused by lights, short trips or infrequent use. It is also a reasonable candidate for a motorcycle or other small 12V vehicle, provided its handbook allows this type of jump-starting.
Choose the Halfords 3L or another larger pack if your engine is above 2L, you drive a large diesel, van or SUV, you operate routinely in very cold conditions, or you simply want more margin than a manufacturer’s maximum engine-size claim provides.
Choose the 6-in-1 instead if an inflator, inverter or 12V socket matters more than low weight. Its 7.7kg mass makes it a poor choice for someone who wants a pack that can live unobtrusively in a glovebox.
Choose the NOCO GB20 if you value its specialist-brand positioning and petrol-engine claim up to 4L, and accept the higher price and Halfords’ stated diesel exclusion. That is not a universal verdict that it is better; it is a different fit for a different vehicle.
The Halfords Advanced 2L is best understood as a compact first-response tool. Its current specification is credible for the small-car market, the older independent 1.6-litre test is encouraging, and the Safe Connect feedback is useful. But the 3V cut-off, short leads and modest engine rating are material limitations, while the old 300A reviews should not be passed off as tests of the current 400A/200A-listed product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Halfords Advanced 2L jump-start a 2-litre diesel?
Halfords rates SKU 191187 for petrol and diesel engines up to 2L, but that is a suitability claim rather than a guarantee. Diesel engines generally demand more starting effort, especially in cold weather, and the battery’s condition, oil viscosity and starter system matter. For a large or heavily discharged diesel, choose a larger booster.
Will it work if the car battery is completely flat?
Halfords specifies that the pack will not jump-start a battery below 3V. Since ‘completely flat’ is not a precise electrical measurement, the accurate answer is conditional: it may help a low battery that remains above 3V, but it should not be expected to activate below that threshold. Do not bypass the protection unless the current Halfords instructions explicitly approve it.
Can it jump-start a hybrid or electric car?
It cannot recharge an EV or hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery. It may be used with a hybrid’s separate 12V auxiliary battery only if the vehicle handbook permits it and identifies the correct connection points. An EV with an empty driving battery needs its manufacturer-approved charging or recovery solution.
Does the Halfords 2L charge the car battery?
No. It provides a short burst of starting assistance. After the engine starts, drive for roughly 30 minutes where possible, but arrange a proper battery charge and test if the battery was deeply discharged or repeatedly needs a boost.
What should I do if the clamp alarm or red warning appears?
Switch off the pack, disconnect it and check that the red clamp is on the positive terminal or designated positive jump point and the black clamp is on the correct earth point. Follow the vehicle handbook and current Halfords instructions. Do not continue if the battery is damaged or the connection remains uncertain.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Halfords Advanced 2L Jump Starter Powerbank is worth buying as lightweight emergency equipment for a small 12V car or motorcycle, particularly at £60.99 when checked. Its compactness is the real advantage, and the available 1.6-litre petrol test supports the basic use case. Just treat the 2L rating as a limit rather than a promise, remember the 3V minimum, keep expectations modest for USB use and do not confuse a jump starter with a charger or a fix for a failing battery.
