Everything new with CarPlay in iOS 18: Features, settings, compatibility, and CarPlay Ultra

iOS 18 brings useful but incremental CarPlay updates. Here is what changed across iOS 18.0–18.5, what requires a compatible vehicle or app, and why CarPlay Ultra is different.

iOS 18 is a modest update for standard CarPlay, not a complete dashboard redesign. The most useful changes are contact photos in Messages, automatic Silent Mode controls, expanded accessibility features, new wallpapers, and richer Siri responses. Later updates in the iOS 18 family added a third app-icon row on some large displays, support for sports layouts in compatible audio apps, EU default-navigation choices, a wireless-CarPlay fix, and the foundation for CarPlay Ultra.

This guide covers the complete iOS 18.x branch—from iOS 18.0 through iOS 18.5—so you can tell which features should appear in an ordinary CarPlay vehicle and which require a compatible app, region, display, or automaker-supported vehicle system.

iOS 18 CarPlay changes at a glance

Version CarPlay change Who gets it
iOS 18.0 Contact photos in Messages and notifications Broad standard-CarPlay support; contact images must be available
iOS 18.0 Silent Mode behavior when connecting to CarPlay Standard CarPlay users
iOS 18.0 Color Filters, grayscale, Bold Text, and Text Size Accessibility feature; exact options can vary by setup
iOS 18.0 Voice Control and Sound Recognition Supported iPhones and languages
iOS 18.0 New CarPlay wallpapers Standard CarPlay; Apple’s designs only
iOS 18.0 and 18.1 Richer Siri response cards and the new Siri presentation Siri is broadly available; Apple Intelligence features require compatible hardware and software
iOS 18.4 Third row of app icons Some vehicles with sufficiently large displays
iOS 18.4 Sports mode for compatible CarPlay audio apps Only apps that implement Apple’s sports-mode API
iOS 18.4 Third-party default navigation apps Users in the European Union with a compatible navigation app
iOS 18.4.1 Fix for a rare wireless-CarPlay connection problem Certain vehicles and connection setups
iOS 18.5 CarPlay Ultra support iPhone 12 or later, iOS 18.5 or later, and a supported automaker system

iOS 18 became available on September 16, 2024, for the iPhone XS and later, including the second-generation iPhone SE and later models. That does not mean every iOS 18 iPhone gets every CarPlay-related feature: availability can depend on the iPhone model, language, region, app, vehicle display, and automaker software. See Apple’s iOS 18 announcement and compatible-device list.

What changed in iOS 18.0

1. Contact photos appear in Messages

CarPlay can now show a contact image next to a person’s name in the Messages app. The image can also appear in an incoming message notification and in Siri’s message-sending interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a small presentation change rather than a new messaging function, but it gives you an additional visual cue when deciding whether a message is from a particular person. It only works when the contact has an associated image available in the iPhone’s contacts.

CarPlay still limits interaction to its driving-focused messaging features: you can listen to messages, dictate replies, and use Siri rather than typing on the vehicle display. Apple documents the broader CarPlay Messages experience.

2. CarPlay can change the iPhone’s Silent Mode automatically

iOS 18 adds a connection-based Silent Mode setting in the CarPlay Settings app. On the CarPlay screen, open Settings > Sounds and choose one of three options:

  • Do Not Change Silent Mode
  • Turn Silent Mode On
  • Turn Silent Mode Off

This is useful if you want the iPhone to enter Silent Mode every time it connects to the car, without pressing the Action button or moving the Ring/Silent switch. It can also restore audible alerts when CarPlay starts if that better suits your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Silent Mode does not mute every kind of audio. Music, podcasts, navigation speech, and other audio apps can continue to play, and alarms follow the iPhone’s normal Silent Mode behavior. Apple’s Silent Mode documentation explains those broader rules.

3. Color Filters and grayscale improve display accessibility

CarPlay’s accessibility settings gain Color Filters, including an option to display the interface in grayscale. The controls are found on the car’s screen at:

Settings > Accessibility > Color Filters

Depending on the filter, the feature can make colors easier to distinguish or remove color from the interface altogether. Apple’s current controls also include filter-intensity choices such as Low, Medium, and High.

Grayscale can help people who find certain color combinations difficult to distinguish, but it also removes color cues that may be useful elsewhere in the interface. Try the setting while parked and choose the version that makes information easiest for you to read—not simply the one that looks most different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Text Size and Bold Text are available in CarPlay accessibility settings

CarPlay’s vision-accessibility controls also include Text Size and Bold Text. These can help on small, low-resolution, or unusually distant displays, although the amount of visible content and the final appearance still depend on the vehicle’s screen.

It is more accurate to describe iOS 18 as expanding and exposing CarPlay’s accessibility controls than to claim that every accessibility setting was invented in this release. Color Filters, Voice Control, and Sound Recognition are the clearest additions associated with iOS 18. Apple’s CarPlay accessibility guide lists the available controls.

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.

5. Voice Control lets you operate the interface by speaking

Voice Control is different from asking Siri a question. It is an accessibility feature that can let you operate interface elements with spoken commands—for example, opening Maps, selecting an item, going back, or navigating through controls that would normally require tapping or swiping.

Turn it on from:

Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control

Voice Control may need to download speech data during initial setup. Apple says it can work without Wi-Fi after the required download is complete, but available languages vary by region and configuration. Road noise, music, and multiple speakers can also affect recognition, so set it up and test it while parked. It is separate from ordinary iPhone Voice Control and from regular Siri requests.

6. Sound Recognition can notify you about selected sounds

Sound Recognition uses the iPhone’s microphone and on-device intelligence to monitor for selected sounds. When it detects one, CarPlay can display a notification. Available examples include:

  • Car horns
  • Sirens
  • A crying baby

To configure it, open:

Settings > Accessibility > Sound Recognition

Turn on Sound Recognition, then choose the sounds you want it to monitor. The feature may be valuable for drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing, or for anyone who wants an additional awareness aid.

Apple’s instructions for Sound Recognition in CarPlay provide the setup details and warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. New wallpapers are available

iOS 18 adds a new family of CarPlay wallpapers visually related to the iOS 18 wallpaper designs. Hands-on testing identified four color families:

  • Blue
  • Gray
  • Ochre or yellow
  • Purple

Each family has light and dark variants. Change the wallpaper from the CarPlay display by opening Settings > Wallpaper, selecting a design, and choosing its available appearance.

CarPlay does not let you select an arbitrary image from the iPhone Photos library as a wallpaper. The available designs are controlled by Apple, and the exact wallpaper list can vary as Apple changes the system. See the reported iOS 18 CarPlay wallpaper set for examples.

Siri and Apple Intelligence: what actually changed

Richer Siri response cards

iOS 18 CarPlay can display richer visual responses for some Siri requests, including weather and sports scores. Sports responses tested in CarPlay showed information such as team logos, scores, and game status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a Siri response improvement, not a new full-screen sports application. Results depend on the request, available data, region, and the vehicle’s display. Siri can be activated through the normal CarPlay methods described in Apple’s CarPlay Siri guide.

The new Siri interface has hardware requirements

Apple Intelligence became available beginning with iOS 18.1, but it is not correct to say that every iOS 18 CarPlay user received Apple Intelligence in the car.

There are three separate pieces to distinguish:

  1. Regular Siri through CarPlay: Available on supported CarPlay iPhones and used for navigation, calls, messages, media, and other voice requests.
  2. The newer Apple Intelligence Siri presentation: Requires compatible Apple Intelligence hardware and software. Apple lists devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models among the supported hardware.
  3. Vehicle rendering: The way Siri appears depends partly on the vehicle’s screen and CarPlay implementation.

Apple’s iOS 18.1 release notes specifically mention a problem in which the new Siri user interface might fail to render full-screen on some large CarPlay displays. That is evidence that the new Siri presentation was designed to work with CarPlay, but it also illustrates why two vehicles can show different behavior.

Most Apple Intelligence features remain iPhone features rather than independent CarPlay apps. iOS 18 did not turn standard CarPlay into a general-purpose artificial-intelligence assistant with unrestricted access to every app or personal context. Do not assume that the most ambitious Siri capabilities announced by Apple—such as deeper personal context and broad in-app actions—were all available through CarPlay during the iOS 18 cycle. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence announcement and the iOS 18.1 release notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small interface observations

Hands-on coverage also reported details such as a redesigned Home button icon and subtle visual changes in areas such as Maps. These are minor interface observations rather than a formally announced, system-wide CarPlay redesign. The central CarPlay layout remains familiar in ordinary vehicles.

What iOS 18.4 added

A third row of app icons on some large displays

iOS 18.4 allows some vehicles with sufficiently large CarPlay displays to show three rows of app icons on the Home screen instead of two. This makes better use of a wide or tall screen and reduces the need to swipe between pages.

It is not a universal feature. CarPlay adapts its layout to the vehicle’s display dimensions, so a large-screen vehicle may show three rows while a smaller screen continues to show two. Updating the iPhone cannot make a small display physically large enough to qualify, and it does not provide a freely configurable dashboard.

Even with a third row, standard CarPlay does not gain universal widgets, arbitrary dashboard layouts, or a general multi-window system. Coverage claiming that every CarPlay vehicle receives three rows is therefore too broad.

Sports mode for compatible CarPlay audio apps

iOS 18.4 adds a CarPlay framework API for audio apps that stream live or recorded sporting events. When an app supports the feature, its sports layout can display:

  • Two teams
  • Team logos
  • Team scores
  • A game clock or event status
  • Background artwork

The API is designed for events involving exactly two teams. It does not automatically add sports scores to every CarPlay audio app, nor does it mean that Apple Sports, ESPN, SiriusXM, or another service will use the layout. Each developer must implement the appropriate CarPlay experience. Apple’s CPNowPlayingModeSports documentation and developer presentation explain the limitation.

EU users can choose a default navigation app

Starting with iOS 18.4, users in the European Union can select a compatible third-party navigation app as the iPhone’s default navigation app instead of Apple Maps. This is an iPhone-level system feature that can affect how navigation links and navigation requests are handled, including when the phone is connected to CarPlay.

It is not a worldwide CarPlay setting, and it does not guarantee identical behavior for every Siri navigation request in every third-party app. The navigation app must support Apple’s requirements, and the option is not presented as a general feature for users in the United States.

What iOS 18.4.1 fixed

iOS 18.4.1 addressed a rare problem that could prevent wireless CarPlay from connecting in certain vehicles. This is a reliability fix rather than a user-facing feature, but it matters if wireless CarPlay suddenly stopped connecting after an update or failed intermittently.

If you experienced the problem, update the iPhone, restart the vehicle’s infotainment system, and check for an automaker firmware update. If the connection still fails, remove the iPhone from the vehicle and the vehicle from Settings > General > CarPlay, then pair them again. The exact reset process varies by automaker. Apple tracks the fix in its iOS 18 update history.

CarPlay Ultra: the major change, but not for every car

CarPlay Ultra requirements

Apple says CarPlay Ultra requires:

  • An iPhone 12 or later
  • iOS 18.5 or later
  • A vehicle with a supported automaker infotainment system

An iPhone update alone cannot activate CarPlay Ultra in an ordinary existing CarPlay vehicle. The car needs compatible hardware, firmware, and automaker integration. Apple announced the initial rollout on May 15, 2025, beginning with Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada. Some vehicles with the required next-generation infotainment system could receive a dealer-installed software update, while additional automakers were expected to expand availability. Check the automaker’s exact model and market information rather than assuming that a vehicle supporting standard CarPlay also supports Ultra.

Standard CarPlay CarPlay Ultra
Primarily presents selected iPhone apps on the vehicle’s compatible display Extends across the center display, instrument cluster, and other vehicle screens
Focused on navigation, audio, messages, calls, and compatible apps Can include gauges, climate, radio, vehicle controls, and iPhone-powered widgets
Works in many existing compatible vehicles Requires a supported automaker system and vehicle integration
Software changes generally arrive through iPhone and CarPlay updates Requires compatible vehicle hardware and firmware as well as the iPhone update

How to turn on the new CarPlay features

Enable Color Filters

  1. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
  2. Open Settings on the CarPlay display.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap Color Filters.
  5. Turn on Color Filters.
  6. Choose a filter and adjust its intensity if the controls are available.

Enable Sound Recognition

  1. Open Settings in CarPlay.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Select Sound Recognition.
  4. Turn on Sound Recognition.
  5. Select the sounds you want CarPlay to monitor, such as horns or sirens.

Enable Voice Control

  1. Open Settings in CarPlay.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Turn on Voice Control.
  4. Complete any speech-data download or setup prompt.
  5. Use spoken commands to select and navigate CarPlay controls.

Change Silent Mode behavior

  1. Open Settings in CarPlay.
  2. Tap Sounds.
  3. Find the Silent Mode connection setting.
  4. Choose Do Not Change Silent Mode, Turn Silent Mode On, or Turn Silent Mode Off.

Change the CarPlay wallpaper

  1. Open Settings on the CarPlay screen.
  2. Tap Wallpaper.
  3. Select one of the available designs.
  4. Choose the light or dark appearance when offered.

You cannot select a personal image from the iPhone Photos library as a standard CarPlay wallpaper.

Why a feature may not appear

CarPlay features are jointly limited by iOS, the iPhone, the app, the region, the vehicle display, and the vehicle’s infotainment software. Check these factors in order:

  1. Confirm the iOS version. The core changes require iOS 18.0 or later. Sports mode and the possible third icon row require iOS 18.4 or later. CarPlay Ultra requires iOS 18.5 or later.
  2. Check the iPhone model. Standard iOS 18 CarPlay support covers a broader range of iPhones than Apple Intelligence, while CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later.
  3. Check the display. The third icon row depends on the vehicle’s screen dimensions and layout.
  4. Check the app. Sports mode appears only when the audio app implements Apple’s CarPlay sports API.
  5. Check the region. Third-party default navigation under iOS 18.4 is an EU feature and also requires a compatible app.
  6. Check vehicle firmware. Automaker software can affect wireless pairing, screen layout, and other CarPlay behavior.
  7. For CarPlay Ultra, check the vehicle itself. Standard CarPlay compatibility is not evidence that the vehicle supports Ultra.

If an accessibility option is missing, first disconnect and reconnect CarPlay, then restart the iPhone and the infotainment system. If that does not help, install the latest available iOS update and check the vehicle manufacturer’s support information. Apple’s CarPlay support documentation is also useful for checking general compatibility.

What iOS 18 did not add to standard CarPlay

Several expectations surrounding iOS 18 are broader than what Apple actually delivered:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It did not give every CarPlay vehicle a completely new design. The standard interface remains familiar.
  • It did not give every vehicle a third row of icons. That is an iOS 18.4 layout change limited by screen size.
  • It did not make Apple Intelligence a general CarPlay platform. The newer Siri appearance and supported iPhone functions have hardware and software limits.
  • It did not provide universal CarPlay widgets or Live Activities. iPhone-powered widgets belong to the separate CarPlay Ultra story, not standard iOS 18 CarPlay.
  • It did not let users use any Photos-library image as a standard CarPlay wallpaper.
  • It did not make every sports service show scores. Sports mode is an API that compatible audio apps must adopt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does iOS 18 give every CarPlay vehicle a third row of icons?

No. The third row arrived in iOS 18.4, but CarPlay shows it only on some vehicles with sufficiently large displays. Smaller screens may continue to show two rows.

Is Apple Intelligence fully available in CarPlay with iOS 18?

No. Regular Siri works through supported CarPlay iPhones, while the newer Apple Intelligence Siri presentation requires compatible hardware such as supported iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. Most Apple Intelligence capabilities remain iPhone features rather than independent CarPlay apps.

Can I install CarPlay Ultra on any car that already has CarPlay?

No. CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, plus a supported automaker infotainment system. An iPhone update cannot add Ultra to an ordinary standard-CarPlay vehicle.

Why is the new sports layout missing from my CarPlay audio app?

Sports mode is a developer API introduced in iOS 18.4. The audio app must implement it, and it is intended for events involving two teams. Updating iOS does not automatically add the layout to every sports or audio service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For most existing vehicles, iOS 18 makes CarPlay more accessible and a little more polished rather than radically different. Update to the latest iOS 18 release for the best compatibility, then look for contact photos, Silent Mode automation, accessibility controls, new wallpapers, and richer Siri responses. Large-display owners may gain a third icon row, EU users can select a supported default navigation app, and certain audio apps can use sports mode. The genuinely broad dashboard-and-instrument-cluster overhaul is CarPlay Ultra—and that requires a compatible vehicle, not just a compatible iPhone.
