The announcement, published before qualifying, set out their penalties—not the final starting grid. Hadjar was assigned a five-place drop; Lindblad was set to start at the back after a 30-place total; and Colapinto’s existing five-place penalty rose to 15 places after a further engine penalty.
What penalties were reported for Hadjar, Colapinto and Lindblad?
Formula 1’s report, published on 2 October 2026 ahead of qualifying, described the component changes and penalties as follows:

| Driver | Power-unit components reported | Prior penalty | Reported outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isack Hadjar | Seventh internal combustion engine (ICE) of the season, against an allowance of four | None noted in the report | Five-place penalty |
| Arvid Lindblad | Fifth ICE, fifth turbocharger and fifth exhaust set, each against an allowance of four | None noted in the report | 30-place total; start at the back |
| Franco Colapinto | Fifth ICE, against an allowance of four | Five places carried from a collision involving Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris in Azerbaijan | Further 10-place penalty; 15 places in total |
These are the penalties Formula 1 reported before Saturday qualifying, not each driver’s final classified grid slot. The report’s headline listed Hadjar, Lindblad and Colapinto; the order here follows the assignment’s title.
Why did Hadjar receive a five-place penalty?
Formula 1 reported that Hadjar was using his seventh ICE of the season, three beyond the stated allowance of four. The report said he had already exceeded the limit with every power-unit component, which is why the ICE change brought a five-place penalty rather than the 10 places associated with a first breach of an element’s allocation.

Why is Lindblad starting at the back?
Lindblad was reported to have taken his fifth ICE, fifth turbocharger and fifth exhaust set. Each exceeded its four-unit allowance. Formula 1 described the resulting accumulated penalty as 30 places and said he would start at the back. A 30-place total does not mean there are 30 grid positions behind the last slot: under Formula 1’s penalty procedure, a total above 15 places sends a driver to the back of the field.
How many places is Colapinto dropping?
Colapinto had already been carrying a five-place penalty from the Azerbaijan collision involving Gasly and Norris. Formula 1 reported that his fifth ICE triggered another 10 places, bringing his total to 15. That is the penalty total announced before qualifying; his precise final grid position depended on the qualifying result and the grid-order procedure.

How do F1 power-unit grid penalties work?
Formula 1’s 2026 explainer lists six power-unit elements and their season allocations. The penalty applies when a driver exceeds an element’s allocation; penalties incurred at the same event accumulate.

|---|---|
| Internal combustion engine (ICE) | 4 |
| Turbocharger (TC) | 4 |
| Exhaust (EX) | 4 |
| Motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K) | 3 |
| Energy store (ES) | 3 |
| Control electronics (CE) | 3 |
Formula 1 says these 2026 allowances include a one-element bonus in anticipation of the season’s rule changes, and that allocations are due to reduce from 2027. The 2026 figures should not be treated as permanent limits.

How the penalty is calculated
- The first time a driver exceeds the allocation for a particular element, the penalty is 10 places.
- Further exceedances bring five places each. Penalties accrued at the same event are added together.
- A total greater than 15 places puts the driver at the back of the field. For totals of 15 or fewer, the qualifying result is adjusted by the penalty and the temporary positions are then resolved into the available grid order.
When does a new component count as used?
Under Formula 1’s explainer, an element counts as used once the car’s timing transponder shows it has left the pit lane during an official session. A newly introduced element joins the driver’s pool for the rest of the season.

The 2 October report established the announced component changes and penalty totals, but not the drivers’ final starting slots after qualifying. Formula 1’s report listed qualifying for 16:00 local time Saturday and the race for 15:00 Sunday; those were the scheduled times printed in that report and may be subject to event updates.
