The Shelby GT350 is the high-revving, naturally aspirated Mustang for drivers who value a manual gearbox, engine response and road-course balance. The Shelby GT500 is the newer flagship for maximum power, harder acceleration and a wider spread of performance technology. There is no single winner: choose the GT350 for involvement and the GT500 for output and straight-line speed. The GT350R changes the equation further with dedicated track hardware.
Which cars are being compared?
This comparison covers Ford’s modern S550 Shelby models: the GT350 and GT350R produced from 2015 through 2020, and the GT500 introduced for the 2020 model year. Earlier Shelby Mustangs, including the 1960s cars, are different vehicles and should not be mixed into a specification or buying comparison.

Engine character: flat-plane revs versus supercharged force
GT350: power that builds with rpm
Ford’s hand-assembled 5.2-liter Ti-VCT V8 uses a flat-plane crankshaft. It produces 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque and has an 8,250-rpm redline. Ford described it as the most powerful naturally aspirated road-going engine in its history and the highest-revving production V8 it had created. The engine’s character rewards keeping it in the upper rev range and makes each upshift part of the experience.

The 2020 GT500 replaces the GT350’s naturally aspirated approach with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. Ford’s positioning is clear even where a full numerical table is unavailable here: it is the newer, higher-output Shelby flagship, engineered to deliver substantially greater acceleration potential and broader performance capability. Its appeal is effortless thrust rather than waiting for the tachometer to climb.

- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Adjustable seat back on some models
- Full function steering with Four wheel spring suspension
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
That distinction matters more than a badge comparison. The GT350 asks the driver to work for its performance through revs and gear selection; the GT500 supplies more force across a wider operating range. If your definition of “faster” is straight-line acceleration or passing power, the GT500 is the logical choice. If speed is inseparable from throttle modulation, engine noise and shifting, the GT350 offers the more distinctive experience.
Chassis and brakes: what each Shelby is trying to do
GT350’s balanced road-course brief
The GT350 was developed as a balanced track-capable Mustang rather than simply a larger-engine car. Its standard MagneRide dampers can adjust as often as 1,000 times per second, allowing the suspension to respond quickly to changing grip and surface conditions. Ford lists Brembo two-piece rotors measuring 394 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear. Combined with the manual gearbox and naturally aspirated throttle response, those systems support repeated braking, corner entry and exit work on a road course.

GT500’s broader maximum-performance brief
The GT500 shares the S550 platform’s 107.1-inch wheelbase but has a 63.7-inch front track, compared with 63.3 inches for the GT350. The wider front measurement is one part of a newer flagship package intended to manage much greater power. The GT500 is therefore the more comprehensive high-performance machine, while the GT350’s engineering identity is easier to summarize: revs, balance and driver involvement.

- Brand new 1/18 scale diecast car model of 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 White with Blue Stripes "Special Edition" die cast model car by Maisto. Brand new box. Real rubber tires.
- Has steerable wheels. Has opening hood, doors and trunk.
- Made of diecast with some plastic parts. Detailed interior, exterior, engine compartment.
- Dimensions approximately L-10, W-4.75, H-3 inches.
- Lightweight 19-inch wheels
- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires developed specifically for the GT350R
- A carbon-fiber rear wing
- A larger front splitter
- Special chassis tuning
- Rear-seat deletion
Those changes make the R the most specialized road-course version of the GT350 family. Cup 2 tires can provide substantially more dry-track grip than ordinary street tires, but they also demand careful inspection, correct pressures and realistic expectations in rain or cold conditions. Verify the exact tire size and load rating for the individual car before replacing them.
The GT500 approaches track performance from the opposite direction: start with the most powerful Shelby drivetrain and add the technology needed to deploy it. It can be the quicker all-around performance car, especially where acceleration dominates, but the GT350R remains the purer choice for buyers who specifically want a lightweight, tire-and-aero-oriented track specification. Without controlled testing on the same circuit, surface and tires, it is not responsible to declare a universal lap-time winner.

Which Shelby is faster?
On the highway or in a straight line
The GT500 wins the question as most drivers mean it. Its supercharged engine and higher-output flagship positioning give it the stronger acceleration and passing-performance case. The GT350’s naturally aspirated engine is rewarding, but it cannot match the GT500’s output advantage.

“Faster” depends on the exact cars, tires, driver and circuit. A GT350R arrives with Cup 2 tires, carbon-fiber aero and track-specific weight reduction, all of which favor cornering consistency. A GT500 brings more power and a newer performance architecture. Treat the GT350R as the more focused tool and the GT500 as the broader, higher-ceiling machine rather than assuming one will set the best time everywhere.

Which is better for daily driving?
Why the GT350 suits an enthusiast daily
The GT350’s manual transmission, linear naturally aspirated response and lower-output chassis brief make it easier to enjoy at ordinary road speeds without constantly managing overwhelming power. It is still a serious performance car, but its rewards are interactive: select the gear, build rpm and use the brakes and balance.
Why the GT500 suits an effortless-performance buyer
The GT500 is the better fit when your priorities are immediate thrust, modern flagship technology and the ability to cover ground quickly with less effort from the driver. The trade-off is that its performance envelope is easier to exceed on public roads, so buyers should be honest about whether they have regular access to a track.
Used-buying guidance: condition matters more than the emblem
These cars are now commonly considered as used performance vehicles. A carefully documented, lightly used GT350 can be a better purchase than a neglected GT500, and a well-maintained GT500 can be a better long-term choice than a heavily tracked GT350R. Evaluate the specific example in front of you.

- Track history: ask for event records, tire invoices, brake work and alignment documentation. Track use is not automatically disqualifying, but undisclosed use is a warning sign.
- Consumables: inspect tire age and wear, rotor surfaces, pad thickness, wheel damage and underbody contact marks.
- Provenance: service invoices and consistent ownership history are more useful than a seller’s claim that a car is “rare.”
- Modifications: identify non-factory engine calibration, cooling, suspension, exhaust and aero parts, then determine whether the original components are included.
Do not confuse a GT500SE with a stock GT500
Shelby American says the 1965 GT350 was the first Mustang-based car it created jointly with Ford, which explains why both modern nameplates carry unusual historical weight. Shelby American also described its 2020 GT500 Signature Edition (GT500SE) as exceeding 800 hp on 93-octane fuel after a 40-hp increase. That figure applies to a modified Shelby American Signature Edition, not to an unmodified Ford GT500. Always identify the builder and specification before comparing horsepower claims.
A simple choice framework
| If you value… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| High-rpm engine character and a manual gearbox | GT350 | Its naturally aspirated V8 and Tremec six-speed make the driver’s inputs central to the experience. |
| The most focused factory road-course equipment | GT350R | Cup 2 tires, carbon-fiber aero, lightweight wheels, special tuning and rear-seat deletion target track use. |
| Maximum output and straight-line performance | GT500 | Its supercharged V8 and flagship drivetrain are built around substantially greater power potential. |
| A used car with the lowest risk | Whichever has the better history | Condition, maintenance, track exposure and original equipment outweigh the model badge. |
The verdict
The GT350 is the purist’s Shelby: a flat-plane, 8,250-rpm V8, a manual transmission and a chassis designed to make braking and cornering feel deliberate. The GT350R sharpens that formula for the circuit. The GT500 is the ultimate Mustang when “ultimate” means the most power, the strongest straight-line performance and the greatest modern performance headroom. Pick the GT350 for involvement, the GT350R for specialized track use, and the GT500 for outright pace and flagship status.
