Yes—Google Maps lets you replace the default blue navigation arrow with a car or another vehicle avatar. The change is made in the Google Maps app on your Android phone or iPhone, after navigation has started. You can then connect to Android Auto or CarPlay and use Google Maps on the vehicle display.
Google’s current help pages do not document a separate Android Auto or CarPlay menu for choosing the icon. Configure it on the phone first rather than looking for the setting in your car’s infotainment system.

How to change the Google Maps car icon
The setting changes the navigation indicator—the object that represents your current position on the map. It does not alter your car’s dashboard, infotainment software, vehicle profile, or navigation voice.
- Open Google Maps on your Android phone or iPhone.
- Start navigation to any destination.
- Tap the blue navigation arrow. If you already selected an avatar, tap the current vehicle icon instead.
- Swipe left or right through the available car and vehicle avatars.
- Choose a color if Google Maps shows color options.
- Tap Done.
The selected icon should replace the usual blue arrow in the Google Maps navigation view. Google does not promise a realistic replica of your particular make or model; the feature is better described as a driving avatar or navigation car icon.

Using the icon with Android Auto
Android Auto projects compatible phone apps, including Google Maps, onto a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. The practical sequence is:
- Choose the avatar in Google Maps on your phone using the steps above.
- Connect your phone to the car with Android Auto.
- Open Google Maps on the Android Auto screen and start or resume navigation.
Google’s Android Auto documentation confirms that Maps can be used on a compatible vehicle display, but it does not describe a dedicated head-unit control for changing the Google Maps driving avatar. In other words, do not expect to find the setting under the car’s Android Auto menu.
For wired Android Auto, Google lists a compatible Android phone, compatible car or stereo, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable as requirements. Wireless Android Auto also requires compatible phone and vehicle hardware, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.

If your Android Auto connection is wired
A connection problem is separate from the avatar feature. If Google Maps works on the phone but Android Auto will not connect reliably, replacing a damaged or unsuitable lead with a high-quality USB cable for Android Auto may help. The cable cannot add vehicle avatars or change the Google Maps setting; it only addresses the wired connection requirement.
If the avatar disappears on Android Auto
Some recent Android Auto community reports describe the car icon or blue arrow disappearing after users switch apps or after an Android Auto update, while the route and map continue working. That is community troubleshooting evidence, not a confirmed universal Google bug or a guaranteed behavior on every vehicle.
If this happens, disconnect Android Auto, open Google Maps on the phone, start navigation, and select the vehicle icon again. Then reconnect Android Auto and reopen Maps. If only the indicator is missing while turn-by-turn navigation continues, the problem is more likely to be a display or software issue than a failure of the route itself.

- Connect the iPhone to a CarPlay-compatible vehicle.
- Open Google Maps on the CarPlay screen.
- Add or select a destination and tap Go.
Google’s CarPlay help documentation explains how to open Maps, choose a destination, start navigation, and use supported navigation features. It does not document a CarPlay-specific control for selecting the driving avatar. Therefore, the safest approach is to choose the icon in the iPhone app before using Maps through CarPlay.
A wireless CarPlay adapter can be relevant only when a vehicle supports the necessary wired CarPlay configuration and the adapter is compatible with that vehicle and iPhone. It does not change the Google Maps avatar and is not required merely to select one.
Will the car icon appear on both platforms?
It may carry into the projected Google Maps display after you select it on the phone, but Google’s current platform-specific documentation does not guarantee identical behavior across every Android Auto and CarPlay setup.

What to do when the custom icon does not appear
- Disconnect projection temporarily. If you are using Android Auto or CarPlay, return to the phone’s Google Maps app.
- Start navigation. The avatar selector is available from the active navigation view rather than the ordinary map-browsing screen.
- Tap the current indicator. Tap the blue arrow or existing vehicle avatar, select a new option, and tap Done.
- Reconnect the phone. Reopen Google Maps on the vehicle display.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the phone, vehicle or stereo, operating system, Google Maps version, and connection method meet the requirements for Android Auto or CarPlay.
- Separate connection faults from display faults. If Maps will not load at all, investigate the cable, wireless connection, permissions, data connection, or compatibility. If navigation works but only the icon is missing, it may be a projection or software-display issue.
Restarting the phone, closing and reopening Google Maps, and reconnecting the phone can also clear a temporary display-state problem. Avoid assuming that a new adapter will fix the avatar itself: connectivity accessories can establish Android Auto or CarPlay in some configurations, but they do not create or control Google Maps’ driving-avatar feature.

Google Maps versus Waze
Do not transfer Waze instructions to Google Maps. Waze has its own car-icon setting and gives separate guidance for users of Android Auto and CarPlay, including disconnecting the phone before changing the Waze icon. Google Maps uses its own app setting, and the documented Google Maps workflow is to change the icon after navigation starts in the mobile app.
What the feature does—and does not do
- It does: replace the blue navigation arrow with an available car or other vehicle avatar in Google Maps.
- It does: let you choose a color when that option is offered.
- It does not: identify your actual car or display its manufacturer branding.
- It does not: modify the vehicle’s infotainment system or instrument cluster.
- It does not: require a paid accessory or subscription.
- It does not: guarantee that every avatar will display identically on every Android Auto or CarPlay release.
Optional connection hardware—not an avatar solution
The avatar itself is a free Google Maps setting. Hardware is relevant only if you need to establish or improve the phone-to-car connection. Owners of compatible wired Android Auto vehicles may investigate a wireless Android Auto adapter if they want wireless projection, but compatibility must be checked before buying. Similarly, a wireless CarPlay adapter may help some compatible wired-CarPlay configurations become wireless.
Neither type of adapter is needed to choose the car icon, and neither guarantees that a selected avatar will appear on a particular vehicle display.

Can I change the Google Maps vehicle icon directly on CarPlay?
Google’s CarPlay documentation does not describe a dedicated CarPlay-screen control for the avatar. Select the icon in Google Maps on the iPhone, then open Maps through CarPlay.
Why did my Google Maps car icon disappear?
