Cybertruck Pedal Problem: What Tesla’s April 2024 Recall Confirmed

Tesla’s Cybertruck delivery pause followed reports of a loose accelerator-pedal pad. The later recall confirmed a physical retention defect affecting 3,878 model-year 2024 vehicles—not a software sudden-acceleration problem.

Tesla did suspend or delay some Cybertruck deliveries in April 2024 while addressing an accelerator-pedal problem—but the confirmed defect was physical, not a software “sudden acceleration” failure. The pedal pad could detach under high force, become trapped in interior trim above the pedal, and potentially hold the accelerator down.

What began with owner reports and canceled delivery appointments was later substantiated by Tesla’s recall filing and a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety recall covering 3,878 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks.

What happened with the Cybertruck pedal?

In April 2024, Cybertruck owners and reservation holders began reporting canceled or postponed deliveries. Tesla’s initial customer messages referred to an “unexpected delay regarding the preparation of your vehicle,” without publicly explaining the cause at the time.

Attention intensified after an owner posted video appearing to show the accelerator-pedal pad partially detached and lodged beneath surrounding interior trim. Other owners described possible unintended-acceleration events. Those early accounts were reports and allegations, not an official determination that every incident had the same cause.

Contemporary reports said Tesla paused or postponed deliveries while it investigated and corrected the issue. The operational pause was reported as lasting roughly a week, with deliveries expected to resume around April 20, although customers received inconsistent information about the timing and reason for the delay.

Tesla then issued service bulletin SB-24-33-003 on April 18, 2024. The bulletin treated the matter as a recall and described the specific failure mode: the accelerator-pedal pad could dislodge and become trapped in the trim above the pedal.

On April 19, NHTSA materials and contemporary reporting identified the recall population as 3,878 Cybertrucks. The NHTSA recall number was 24V-276.

The confirmed defect was a pedal-pad retention problem

The affected Cybertruck used a floor-mounted accelerator pedal. The confirmed concern was the connection between the pedal pad and the pedal assembly—not a confirmed defect in the vehicle’s drive-control software.

According to Tesla’s service documentation, applying a high amount of force to the accelerator-pedal pad could cause the pad to dislodge. Once detached, it could become wedged in the interior trim above the pedal. In that position, the pad could interfere with normal pedal operation and potentially keep the accelerator applied, increasing the risk of a collision.

  • Soft Rubber: Rubber is used as the main material of car pedal covers, even if it is subjected to high-frequency pedaling, friction and environmental tests for a long period of time, it can still maintain the integrity of the form without worrying about cracking

This distinction matters. The recall confirmed a mechanical retention defect, but it did not establish that all owner-reported acceleration events were caused by that defect. Nor did it establish a general Cybertruck or Tesla software problem involving unintended acceleration.

How the delivery suspension fits into the timeline

Date What was reported or documented
April 2024 Customers reported canceled or postponed Cybertruck deliveries. Tesla described the delay as an unexpected preparation issue, without initially publicly identifying a pedal defect.
April 14–15 An owner video showing an apparently detached or displaced pedal pad circulated online. Other owners reported possible pedal-related acceleration incidents.
April 15–16 Contemporary reporting said Tesla had halted or postponed deliveries while investigating and correcting the issue.
April 18 Tesla issued service bulletin SB-24-33-003, directing inspection and correction of the accelerator-pedal assembly.
April 19 The recall became public, with a population of 3,878 vehicles and a free pedal-assembly remedy.
After April 19 Tesla added a revised pedal component to vehicles in production and arranged repairs for affected vehicles already at or traveling to delivery centers.

Which Cybertrucks were recalled?

Tesla’s recall-service information identifies the affected vehicles as model-year 2024 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through April 4, 2024.

The recall did not cover every Cybertruck ever built. Tesla’s NHTSA filing stated that production vehicles were equipped with a new accelerator-pedal component by April 17, 2024. Vehicles already at delivery centers or in transit were to receive the remedy before delivery.

Owners should verify their individual vehicle by VIN rather than relying only on the production dates above. A VIN check is especially important for vehicles that changed hands, were delivered near the end of the affected period, or may already have received the repair.

What was the official repair?

Tesla’s remedy was free and involved reworking or replacing the accelerator-pedal assembly so that the pedal pad met the required retention specification.

The service bulletin described three possible correction paths:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Secure the existing pedal pad with an approved blind rivet.
  • Replace the pedal assembly with an assembly that already has the rivet installed.
  • Replace the assembly and secure the pad with the specified rivet.

Tesla estimated that the work would take less than 15 minutes. Mobile Service could perform the repair where that option was available. Owners were instructed to schedule through the Tesla app and describe the appointment as an open Cybertruck accelerator-pedal-pad recall repair.

The bulletin lists pedal assembly part number 1250695-99-B and, when required, blind rivet 1064496-00-A. Those details belong to Tesla’s service procedure; they are not a recommendation for owners to source parts or attempt the repair themselves.

What should an owner do if the pedal pad moves?

  1. Stop using the vehicle if the accelerator pedal or pad appears loose, detached, or trapped. Move to a safe location only if doing so can be accomplished without creating additional risk.
  2. Do not try to fix it with adhesive, an aftermarket pedal cover, a hardware-store rivet, or improvised hardware. Those products are not the recall remedy and could interfere with pedal movement or retention.
  3. Check the vehicle’s recall status by VIN through Tesla’s recall-service information or NHTSA’s vehicle-recall lookup.
  4. Arrange authorized recall service through Tesla. Ask whether Mobile Service is available for the vehicle’s location.
  5. Follow Tesla’s instructions if the pedal is currently obstructed. If the vehicle cannot be safely driven, request appropriate assistance rather than driving it to a service center.

Tesla’s service documentation warns that recall work performed by uncertified technicians can create safety or warranty concerns. The safest course is to have the recall completed through Tesla’s authorized service process.

Could pressing the brake stop the Cybertruck?

Tesla stated that pressing the brake pedal would cut drive torque, including when both the accelerator and brake pedals were pressed, and that continued brake application would bring the vehicle to a stop.

That is the vehicle behavior described in Tesla’s recall information, not a replacement for the repair. Owners should not deliberately test the condition or assume that braking mitigation makes it safe to continue driving with a loose or displaced pedal pad.

Were there crashes, injuries, or deaths?

In its safety-recall filing, Tesla said that as of April 15, 2024, it was not aware of collisions, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.

That statement supports the reported status at that date. It does not mean that no owner experienced a frightening acceleration event, and it does not prove that every event described online was caused by the recalled pedal. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Tesla and NHTSA confirmed a physical pedal-pad retention defect affecting a defined group of Cybertrucks.

How many vehicles were repaired?

The recall population was 3,878 vehicles. NHTSA’s quarterly recall reporting listed 3,448 remedied vehicles by the first quarter of 2025. NHTSA’s reporting definition includes vehicles that were repaired, inspected and found not to need further remedy, or returned to inventory, so that number should not automatically be read as 3,448 completed pedal replacements.

What the Cybertruck controversy does—and does not—show

It does show:

  • Owner reports brought attention to a possible accelerator-pedal problem.
  • Tesla delayed or paused some deliveries while the issue was investigated and addressed.
  • Tesla’s service bulletin and NHTSA recall later confirmed a physical pedal-pad retention defect.
  • The defect could allow a detached pad to become trapped in trim above the pedal.
  • The affected population and production range were defined in official recall materials.

It does not show:

  • That Tesla confirmed every owner-reported unintended-acceleration incident.
  • That the defect was a software bug.
  • That the incident proves a general Tesla sudden-unintended-acceleration problem.
  • That every Cybertruck was recalled.
  • That an aftermarket pedal cover, adhesive, or generic rivet is an approved repair.

Primary records behind the recall

The most authoritative records for this issue are Tesla’s Cybertruck recall-service information, Tesla service bulletin SB-24-33-003, NHTSA’s Part 573 recall filing for 24V-276, and NHTSA’s quarterly recall reporting. News reports from outlets including The Associated Press and Ars Technica help document the early delivery delays and owner reports, but social-media posts should be treated as owner allegations unless independently confirmed.

This is a historical April 2024 recall story. For a current vehicle, the decisive information is the VIN-specific recall result and whether Tesla records show that the remedy has been completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Tesla recall the Cybertruck because of sudden acceleration?

Tesla and NHTSA confirmed a physical accelerator-pedal-pad retention defect. The recall was not described as a software sudden-acceleration defect, and it did not establish that every owner-reported acceleration event had the same cause.

How many Cybertrucks were affected?

The recall covered 3,878 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, through April 4, 2024. Owners should confirm eligibility by VIN because the production range is not a substitute for an individual recall lookup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What was the Cybertruck pedal recall repair?

Tesla’s free remedy involved reworking or replacing the accelerator-pedal assembly so the pad met the required retention specification. The service bulletin described approved rivet and pedal-assembly replacement options.

Can owners install a pedal cover or rivet themselves?

They should not. An aftermarket cover, adhesive, generic rivet, or improvised repair is not Tesla’s approved recall remedy and could affect pedal operation. Owners should schedule the repair through Tesla’s authorized service process.

Were any crashes or injuries linked to the recalled pedal?

Tesla’s NHTSA filing said that as of April 15, 2024, it was not aware of collisions, injuries, or deaths related to the condition. That date-specific statement does not determine the cause of every owner-reported incident.

The Bottom Line

The Cybertruck pedal controversy moved from unverified owner reports to a confirmed, narrowly defined mechanical recall. The pad—not the drive-control software—could detach and wedge into trim. Owners of potentially affected 2024 Cybertrucks should check the VIN and obtain Tesla’s authorized repair rather than attempting an aftermarket fix.
