Best Car Backup Cameras for 2022: The Right Pick for Every Vehicle

The best 2022-era backup camera depends on your vehicle: choose from easy wireless retrofits, mirror displays, wired budget kits, RV systems, Garmin accessories and camera-only replacements.

The best car backup camera for most older vehicles in this 2022-era guide is the AUTO-VOX CS2, because it includes its own monitor and avoids running a long video cable through the cabin. But it is not the best choice for everyone. The AUTO-VOX T2 is better if you want the display built into the rearview mirror; the LeeKooLuu LK3 is a low-cost wired option; the Furrion Vision S is designed around RV and trailer use; the Garmin BC 40 makes sense only for owners of compatible Garmin navigators; and the eRapta ERT01 is suitable when you already have a compatible screen.

This is a 2022-era aftermarket buying guide. Product availability, package contents, prices, compatibility, and model status may change, so verify the current listing before ordering. The recommendations are category picks based on 2022 coverage and manufacturer or retailer information—not the result of a single apples-to-apples laboratory test.

Quick recommendations

Best for 2022-era pick Why choose it Main drawback
Easy retrofit without a factory screen AUTO-VOX CS2 Wireless camera-and-monitor kit with a dedicated 4.3-inch display Both camera and monitor still need power
Replacing the rearview mirror AUTO-VOX T2 Combines a mirror replacement with a rear camera display More involved installation and vehicle-fit questions
Low-cost wired system LeeKooLuu LK3 Complete kit with a 1080p camera, monitor, and adjustable guidelines Requires cable routing and may be awkward to integrate with some screens
RV or trailer Furrion Vision S FOS07TAPMB Designed for the longer distances and mounting arrangements common to RVs Compatibility depends on pre-wiring, connectors, and intended use
Compatible Garmin navigator owners Garmin BC 40 Battery-powered wireless camera that displays on supported Garmin devices Not a standalone kit; compatibility is limited
Camera-only replacement eRapta ERT01 Inexpensive license-plate-area camera for an existing compatible display Monitor, video cable, and possibly adapters are extra

For a vehicle without a usable screen, start with a complete kit such as the AUTO-VOX CS2 wireless backup camera kit. If your car already has an aftermarket head unit or factory display with a compatible camera input, a camera-only replacement may cost less—but only after you confirm the input, connector, video format, and power requirements.

What a backup camera can—and cannot—do

A backup camera is primarily useful for showing the area immediately behind the vehicle, including the low or close-in zone that mirrors may not reveal. It can help you spot a short object, curb, child, bicycle, or hitch alignment point while reversing.

It is not a substitute for mirrors, shoulder checks, looking around the vehicle, or a walk-around when conditions require one. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that rearview video systems supplement—not replace—direct observation and mirrors. A basic camera also does not automatically provide rear cross-traffic warning. That is a separate driver-assistance technology intended to detect approaching hazards outside the camera’s view.

In the United States, NHTSA’s rear-visibility rule required backup-camera systems in new passenger vehicles manufactured on or after May 1, 2018. That makes aftermarket systems especially relevant to owners of older vehicles, specialty vehicles, pickups, RVs, trailers, and cars with a failed original camera or display.

Best overall easy retrofit: AUTO-VOX CS2

The AUTO-VOX CS2 is the strongest general recommendation when an older car, truck, van, RV, or trailer does not already have a suitable screen. It pairs a rear camera with a dedicated 4.3-inch monitor, so you do not need to replace the head unit or figure out whether the factory infotainment system accepts an aftermarket video feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manufacturer describes the system as a 480p wireless camera-and-monitor kit. 2022 buying-guide coverage highlighted its relatively straightforward installation, adjustable parking guidelines, and usefulness across cars, trucks, RVs, trailers, and vans.

The important qualification is the word wireless. Wireless refers to the video connection between the rear camera and monitor; it does not mean the system installs without wiring. The camera needs power, usually near the rear of the vehicle, and the monitor also needs power. You should confirm how the kit is triggered—typically through the reverse-light circuit or another switched source—before ordering.

Choose the CS2 when you want a complete retrofit and can accept a separate dashboard or windshield-mounted display. It is less attractive if you want a clean factory-style installation, a high-resolution modern display, or integration with an existing touchscreen.

Best mirror-display concept: AUTO-VOX T2

The AUTO-VOX T2 mirror backup camera combines a rear camera with a replacement rearview-mirror display. Instead of placing a second screen on the dashboard, the driver views the rear image in the mirror area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2022 coverage described the T2 as a wired system with a 170-degree viewing angle, reverse-light power, an IP68-rated camera, and a display integrated into the mirror. Those specifications make it appealing for drivers who want a less cluttered dashboard and a display that occupies a familiar sightline.

The tradeoff is installation. You must mount the replacement mirror securely, route the video and power wiring, connect the reverse-light circuit correctly, and verify that the mirror attachment is compatible with your vehicle. Do not assume that a replacement mirror fits every factory mirror mount. A professional installer is sensible if the vehicle has complicated trim, unusual mirror hardware, or a difficult wiring path.

Best low-cost wired kit: LeeKooLuu LK3

The LeeKooLuu LK3 is a budget-oriented complete system for buyers willing to route a cable from the rear of the vehicle to a small monitor. 2022 coverage identified a 1080p camera, an approximately 149-degree viewing angle, a 4.3-inch display, adjustable guidelines, and options for 12-volt or hard-wired monitor power.

  • 【WIDE ADAPTABILITY】YIMU back up camera for truck compatible with most vehicles, including cars, trucks, trailers, RVs, vans, SUVs, and campers, this system effectively eliminates blind spots for safer driving.

A wired connection avoids the uncertainty of a wireless video link and can be a practical choice for a simple car or pickup installation. The price-oriented design also makes it a reasonable replacement when you need both a camera and a screen but do not want to replace the vehicle’s head unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation is more involved than with a wireless kit because the video cable must be routed safely through the vehicle. The LK3’s lack of conventional RCA connectors can also complicate integration with some factory or aftermarket displays. Treat it as a complete DIY kit rather than a premium factory-integration solution, and confirm the included connectors before purchase.

Best for an RV or trailer: Furrion Vision S FOS07TAPMB

The Furrion Vision S FOS07TAPMB was selected as an RV pick in 2022 coverage. It belongs in a separate category because an RV or trailer presents different problems from a compact car: greater distance between camera and display, higher mounting positions, pre-wiring, more vibration, different connector arrangements, and a need to see around a long vehicle.

Before buying, check four things:

  1. Pre-wiring: Determine whether the RV or trailer is wired for a Furrion camera system.
  2. Camera purpose: Confirm whether you need a camera for reversing and hitch alignment, continuous observation while driving, or both.
  3. Connector and power arrangement: Match the camera, monitor, and vehicle wiring rather than assuming that a similarly named RV system will connect directly.
  4. Mounting height and view: Make sure the camera can see the area immediately behind the trailer or motorhome, not just distant traffic.

An RV observation camera is not automatically equivalent to a passenger-car backup camera. The correct system depends on the vehicle’s pre-wiring and how you intend to use the image.

Best for compatible Garmin navigation users: Garmin BC 40

The Garmin BC 40 is a battery-powered wireless camera with a license-plate mount. Garmin states that it can transmit to a compatible navigator from up to 26 feet in most passenger vehicles. That makes it a useful ecosystem accessory for someone who already owns a supported Garmin DriveSmart or camper/RV navigator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limitation is decisive: the BC 40 is not a universal standalone backup-camera kit. It needs a compatible Garmin display, and Garmin maintains a device compatibility list. Garmin support also states that the operating distance between the BC 40 and compatible navigator must not exceed 26 feet. Check the current compatibility information at Garmin’s BC 40 product page and its support documentation before purchasing.

Availability may also vary by region and date; some regional Garmin pages have shown the model as discontinued. Choose it because it fits your existing Garmin system, not simply because it is wireless.

  • 【Quick Install】Set up your car backup camera system in just 5 minutes with a simple two-step process: ① Connect the camera and monitor using the provided video power cable. ② Plug the reverse camera system into a cigarette lighter for instant use.

Best camera-only budget replacement: eRapta ERT01

The eRapta ERT01 is a camera-only option for a buyer who already has a compatible touchscreen, monitor, or aftermarket head unit. It mounts near the license plate, is described as waterproof, and sends its video feed to a separate display.

This can be an economical replacement for a failed camera, but its product price is not the complete installation cost. You may also need a video cable, power wiring, a monitor, a factory-integration adapter, or a connector converter. The camera must match the display’s input and video requirements. If you do not already have a compatible screen, choose a complete camera-and-monitor kit instead.

How to choose the right backup camera

1. Start with the display

First determine where the image will appear. Your choices are usually:

  • Dedicated monitor: Simplest for an older vehicle without a screen. It is included with kits such as the CS2 and LK3.
  • Replacement mirror display: Keeps the dashboard clear but requires more careful mounting and wiring, as with the T2.
  • Factory or aftermarket head unit: Can look the most integrated, but requires a compatible camera input, connector, video format, and trigger signal.
  • Compatible navigation device: Convenient when you already own the right Garmin navigator, but not useful without that ecosystem.

A camera-only unit is not a complete system. Crutchfield’s rear-view-camera buying guide is useful for checking vehicle-specific camera, display, and adapter requirements.

2. Decide between wired and wireless

Wired systems require more cable routing but avoid relying on a wireless video link. They can be a good fit for a simple vehicle where you are comfortable removing trim and securing a cable.

Wireless systems reduce the long video-cable run, which is often the hardest part of a retrofit. They still require power at both the camera and monitor, however, and the wireless transmission must be suitable for the vehicle length and installation environment. Wireless is a convenience feature, not a promise of installation-free operation.

3. Match the mount to the vehicle

Common mounting styles include license-plate mounts, lip mounts, brackets, and vehicle-specific mounts. The location changes the camera’s view and affects whether you must drill holes, expose the camera to damage or theft, or risk seeing too much bumper and not enough of the area behind the vehicle.

  • 【1/2.7in AHD 1080P Large Chip Adopted in This Reverse Cam】The chip size determines the amount of reversing camera output pixels, compared with 1/4in chip used in ordinary backup cam, the most apparent feature is the enhanced brightness and color saturation besides of the sufficient clarity. • 【170° Wide Angle Optical Glass HD Lens】The lens is the core component of the reverse camera for car. The HD lens used in PMD2A-S wide angle backup camera is very different from ordinary lens in appearance, it has a larger aperture and a stronger sense of technology. High transmittance glass, fish eye appearance, F1.4 aperture, all these features directly determine the wide angle, maximum output pixels and night vision performance of the license plate camera.
  • 【Back Up The Car Easily】Whether it is day or night, you can see almost everything behind the car when reversing, PixelMan camera for car reverse will let your driving easier and safer. Isn’t it what you need?

For a pickup or towing vehicle, check whether the camera can show the hitch or trailer coupler. For a Jeep or other spare-tire-mounted vehicle, a license-plate location may be partially blocked or too far from the vehicle centerline. For an RV, confirm the camera’s intended height, viewing range, and pre-wiring.

4. Treat viewing angle and resolution as specifications, not guarantees

A wider published viewing angle can expose more of the area behind the car, but an extremely wide view can introduce perspective distortion. Camera height, tilt, lens position, and the amount of bumper visible matter just as much.

Similarly, a 1080p camera is not automatically clearer in every installation than a lower-resolution model. Display quality, cable quality, lighting, lens cleanliness, compression, and nighttime performance all affect what you see. Adjustable guidelines are helpful only after they are calibrated to the vehicle; they should not be treated as accurate simply because the feature is listed on the box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check weather resistance and night performance

Externally mounted cameras face rain, road salt, dust, temperature swings, and car-wash spray. Use the manufacturer’s weather-resistance rating where one is provided, but do not turn an IP rating into a guarantee of long-term reliability without comparative testing. The lens and its installation angle matter too: water spots, dirt, glare, and a poorly sealed cable entry can degrade the image.

For night use, look for clear information about low-light performance and make sure the reverse lights illuminate the area you need to see. A camera can be technically weather-resistant yet still produce an unhelpful image if it is mounted where headlights or license-plate lights create glare.

6. Verify power and reverse triggering

Many backup-camera systems activate when they receive power from the reverse-light circuit. That usually means the camera shows an image when reverse is selected, but the exact wiring method varies by vehicle and kit.

Before ordering, identify the reverse-light wire, the monitor’s power source, the required voltage, and whether the vehicle uses a signal that needs an adapter. Some portable or solar-oriented products use manual activation or periodic charging instead; those should not be described as automatically activating with reverse unless the product documentation says so.

Installation checklist

Before buying, inspect the vehicle rather than relying only on a generic product description:

  • Does the vehicle already have a screen, and does it accept a rear-camera input?
  • Where can the camera mount without blocking the license plate or becoming vulnerable to impact?
  • Can the camera see the bumper, curb, hitch, or trailer coupler as needed?
  • Where is the reverse-light wiring, and can it be accessed without damaging the harness?
  • What path will the cable take through the hatch, trunk, tailgate, frame, or RV body?
  • Are vehicle-specific adapters required for a factory head unit or steering-wheel system?
  • Will the monitor obstruct the driver’s view or interfere with airbags and other safety equipment?
  • Does the kit include all necessary brackets, power leads, video cables, and connectors?

Follow the installation instructions for the specific vehicle and product. Professional help is reasonable when the job involves routing cables through trim, replacing a rearview mirror, drilling body panels, accessing difficult reverse-light wiring, or integrating with a factory infotainment system. If you need fitment help, use a service that can find a backup camera for your vehicle rather than assuming a universal product will connect correctly.

How to test and calibrate the installation

  1. With the vehicle parked and secured, confirm that the monitor powers on without flickering.
  2. Select reverse and verify that the camera activates consistently.
  3. Check that the image is upright, centered, and not obscured by the bumper, hatch, spare tire, or hitch.
  4. Walk behind the vehicle and confirm that nearby objects appear in the expected part of the image.
  5. Calibrate parking guidelines using a known distance and the actual path of the vehicle. Do not rely on factory-default lines.
  6. Test in daylight and darkness, including with the reverse lights on.
  7. Move the vehicle slowly in a safe, empty area to check for signal dropouts, cable strain, or a view that changes when the hatch or tailgate moves.

If the image is black, start by checking power and the reverse trigger. If the monitor turns on but shows “no signal,” inspect the video connection, wireless pairing, and camera power. If the view is intermittent, look for a loose ground, damaged cable, poor wireless placement, or a connector exposed to moisture. If guidelines are misleading, recalibrate or disable them rather than treating them as a substitute for direct observation.

Which type should you buy?

  • Older car or truck with no screen: Buy a complete kit with its own monitor, such as the AUTO-VOX CS2 or LeeKooLuu LK3.
  • You dislike dashboard-mounted screens: Consider the AUTO-VOX T2, after confirming mirror hardware and accepting the more involved installation.
  • You already own a compatible Garmin navigator: The Garmin BC 40 can be a convenient ecosystem match; otherwise, it is the wrong product category.
  • RV, motorhome, or trailer: Start with the Furrion Vision S category and verify pre-wiring, range, connector type, and whether you need reversing or continuous observation.
  • Existing compatible screen with a failed camera: Consider the eRapta ERT01 or another camera-only replacement after confirming input and wiring compatibility.
  • Factory-screen integration: Prioritize vehicle-specific fitment information and adapters over the lowest camera price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wireless backup cameras actually wire-free?

No. Wireless systems usually eliminate the long video cable between the rear camera and front monitor, but the camera and monitor still need power. The camera commonly uses the reverse-light circuit, while the monitor needs a separate 12-volt or switched connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect a camera-only product to my factory touchscreen?

Only if the touchscreen has a compatible camera input and the camera’s video format, connector, power, and reverse-trigger requirements match. Many factory systems need a vehicle-specific integration adapter, so confirm fitment before buying.

Is the Garmin BC 40 compatible with any phone or GPS?

No. Garmin says the BC 40 works only with certain compatible Garmin navigators. Check Garmin’s current compatibility list and the stated maximum operating range before purchase.

Do backup-camera guidelines show the exact path of the vehicle?

Not automatically. Guidelines must be calibrated to the vehicle and camera position, and even calibrated lines are an aid—not a replacement for mirrors, shoulder checks, and direct observation.

Should I install a backup camera myself?

A straightforward license-plate installation may be manageable for an experienced DIYer, but professional installation is sensible for mirror replacement, body drilling, difficult trim removal, complex reverse-light wiring, or factory-screen integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For a typical older vehicle without a working display, the AUTO-VOX CS2 is the most practical 2022-era starting point because it is a complete retrofit rather than a camera that depends on existing hardware. Choose the T2 for a mirror-based installation, the LK3 for a low-cost wired setup, the Furrion Vision S for the RV/trailer category, the BC 40 only with a compatible Garmin navigator, and the eRapta ERT01 only when you already have a suitable screen. Whatever you buy, verify fitment and wiring first—and continue using mirrors and direct visual checks every time you reverse.
