Google Maps can show estimated toll prices on supported routes and highlight a more fuel- or energy-efficient option when available. That makes it easier to compare a faster toll road with a slower alternative, but Maps is not documented as providing one guaranteed total for fuel, tolls and all other trip expenses.
What Google Maps can estimate
Tolls on supported routes
Google announced toll-price estimates for nearly 2,000 toll roads in the United States, India, Japan and Indonesia in 2022. The estimate can account for the route, the day and time of travel, and the cost associated with a toll pass or other payment methods. Google said it considers “the cost of using a toll pass or other payment methods, what the day of the week is, along with how much the toll is expected to cost at the specific time you’ll be crossing it.” Google’s toll-estimate announcement describes the feature and its initial coverage.

Coverage and availability can vary by region and platform, and prices or payment rules can change. Treat a Maps figure as an estimate; check the relevant toll authority for current prices and rules, particularly if you need to know whether a pass, transponder or particular payment method applies.
Relative fuel or energy efficiency
Maps can estimate relative fuel or energy efficiency for electric and combustion-engine cars and gas-powered motorcycles. When the information is available, it can highlight the most efficient route among alternatives. Google says its estimate considers real-time traffic, route simplicity and road conditions. Its Google Maps Help page on fuel-efficient routing explains that a more efficient route means lower fuel or energy use and CO2e emissions.

This indicator helps compare routes; it is not documented as a universal fuel-price calculator. The available information does not establish that the consumer app combines estimated fuel cost and tolls into a guaranteed all-in dollar total, much less one that includes maintenance or other vehicle expenses.
How to compare routes in Google Maps
- Enter your destination and request directions for your trip.
- Review the route options and any toll-price information displayed for them. Availability depends on the route and region.
- Compare the estimated toll with the time saved, traffic conditions and any fuel- or energy-efficiency indicator shown for an alternative.
- If you prefer not to pay tolls, open the route options and choose “Avoid tolls” where that option is available. Review the resulting route for extra time or other tradeoffs.
For vehicle-specific toll pricing, accurate vehicle and toll-pass details matter. Google’s Routes API documentation says returned toll prices reflect what would actually be charged when the request accurately represents the driver’s vehicle and toll passes. That API guidance underscores why an estimate can differ from your charge if the relevant details are wrong; it does not establish a single combined fuel-and-toll total in the consumer Maps app.

Is the faster route worth the toll?
Compare the costs and benefits that matter for your trip rather than treating the shortest arrival time as the only measure. A useful side-by-side check includes:
- Time: how much sooner the toll route is expected to arrive, accounting for traffic.
- Toll: the displayed estimate, and whether it reflects your pass or payment method.
- Fuel or energy: the efficiency indicator, if Maps offers one for your vehicle and route.
- Route conditions: traffic, road conditions and route simplicity, which can affect the journey as well as efficiency.
- Alternatives: whether a toll-free route is practical and how much extra time it adds.
Google’s 2026 Maps announcement describes route choices that can surface these kinds of tradeoffs, such as a longer trip with less traffic versus a faster route with a toll. Google’s 2026 Maps announcement also says Maps incorporates over 5 million traffic updates around the world every second; that is a description of traffic-data processing, not a road-trip cost figure.

What to verify before you leave
- Check the toll authority’s current price and payment requirements for the roads on your route.
- Confirm that the estimate suits your vehicle and any toll pass you plan to use.
- Check whether the route and your platform show toll and efficiency information; feature availability varies by country, vehicle and rollout.
- Use the efficiency indicator to compare relative route use, not as a promised fuel bill. Your actual fuel or charging cost depends on your vehicle and energy prices.
