GM’s U.S. EV Deliveries Fell 61.7% in Q3 2026—but the Comparison Needs Context

GM’s listed U.S. EV deliveries fell about 61.7% in Q3 2026, but the year-earlier quarter was a record shaped by the rush ahead of the federal credit’s end. Here’s what the model mix and capacity disclosures add to the story.

General Motors’ listed U.S. EV deliveries fell about 61.7% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, to 25,473 from 66,501. That EV total is a calculation from the model rows in GM’s delivery table, not an aggregate the company reported separately. GM’s total U.S. deliveries fell much less: 5.5%.

How far did GM’s EV deliveries fall?

Adding the U.S. delivery figures for GM’s listed Cadillac, Chevrolet, BrightDrop and GMC EV lines gives 25,473 deliveries in Q3 2026, compared with 66,501 in Q3 2025—a decline of about 61.7%. The calculation uses the same set of model lines in both years, including BrightDrop, which is an electric commercial-vehicle line and not a retail passenger car. GM’s table reports model-level figures rather than a combined EV total. Both quarters had 77 selling days, according to GM’s Q3 2026 delivery table.

The EV drop was far steeper than the change in GM’s overall business. The company delivered 670,974 vehicles in the United States in Q3 2026, down 5.5% from 710,347 a year earlier, according to the same table.

Why is the year-over-year comparison so stark?

Q3 2025 was an unusually high comparison point. GM said it delivered a record 66,501 EVs in the quarter and reported U.S. EV deliveries of 144,668 for the first nine months of 2025, up 105% year over year. The company connected the broader industry’s EV sales surge to customers moving to buy before the $7,500 federal credit for new EVs ended. The credit ended in September 2025; the Associated Press also reported that the federal incentive had included up to $4,000 for qualifying used EVs (GM’s Q3 2025 results; Associated Press).

That timing helps explain why Q3 2025 is a difficult quarter to use as a normal baseline. It does not establish that the credit’s expiration caused the entire 2026 decline: the available figures do not break down the decline by cause.

Did every GM EV lose ground?

No. The model picture is mixed, although the available year-to-date comparisons should not be mistaken for Q3-only changes. GM’s delivery table shows Optiq and Vistiq ahead of their comparable prior-year year-to-date figures, while Equinox EV, Blazer EV and Silverado EV were down. The Bolt also had a substantial 2026 sales base against a very small prior-year comparison. Growth from a small or new comparison base, however, does not by itself show that a model has reached large sales volume.

These differences matter: a steep combined decline can coexist with growth in particular models. The table’s model-level results describe GM’s lineup, not a single uniform customer response across all its EVs.

Is GM giving up on electric vehicles?

GM has not said that it is ending its current retail EV lineup, but it has disclosed a significant adjustment to expected capacity. In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, GM reported $7.9 billion in 2025 charges related primarily to reassessing North American EV capacity, followed by another $1.1 billion in Q1 2026 related primarily to capacity reassessment and negotiations. The filing describes charges and ongoing negotiations; those amounts should not be read as all cash losses or consumer-facing costs. It also says GM expected its current retail Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac EVs to remain available at that time. That was the company’s stated expectation in the filing, not a guarantee about later model years (GM’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q).

GM’s statements also show the tension between its long-term direction and near-term plans. In its Q3 2025 shareholder letter, Chair and CEO Mary Barra wrote that “near-term EV adoption will be lower than planned” as the regulatory framework evolved and federal consumer incentives ended. She also called EVs the company’s “North Star” and said its Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC portfolio had connected with customers. Those are management’s stated views, not independent forecasts (GM’s Q3 2025 shareholder letter).

What this says—and does not say—about GM and the EV market

GM described itself as the No. 2 U.S. EV seller in Q2 2026 in its July sales release. That is a company statement about a specific earlier quarter, not a Q3 ranking or an independently audited measure of the wider EV market. Likewise, GM’s Q3 delivery figures alone cannot establish whether U.S. EV sales overall rose or fell in Q3 2026.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: GM’s listed EV deliveries dropped sharply from a record, credit-influenced quarter, while its total deliveries declined far less and its individual EV models did not all move in the same direction. The company has also acknowledged a smaller near-term market and incurred material costs while reassessing capacity. That context makes the comparison less simple than the headline percentage, but it does not make the decline inconsequential.
