Blackjaw, a black-finished multi-tool attributed to Tokyo-based Tsuchioto Works, is being presented as a compact alternative to familiar Leatherman designs. Gear Patrol reported an $80 Super Early Bird Kickstarter reward and estimated March 2027 delivery, but the campaign’s live status, reward availability, shipping costs and final checkout price have not been independently confirmed. Its clearest selling point is a focused set of built-in tools; its clearest trade-off is that those tools are fixed rather than interchangeable.
What is the Blackjaw multi-tool?
Gear Patrol describes Blackjaw as a Japanese-designed, blacked-out multi-tool made from aluminum and stainless steel. Its reported implement list includes pliers, wire cutters, a knife, a wire-stripping blade, a double-sided saw, a Phillips screwdriver, a flat screwdriver, a can opener and a bottle opener. A carabiner is also part of the carry-oriented design.
There is a counting wrinkle: Gear Patrol’s product card calls Blackjaw “11-in-1,” while its article body enumerates ten traditional functions and treats the carabiner as a carry convenience. The published description therefore does not establish a single unambiguous count of working tools. The report does not provide independent performance testing of the implements. How the fixed-tool design compares with Leatherman
Blackjaw’s implements are reported to be fixed to the chassis: there are no swappable tools or interchangeable bits. Is Blackjaw a compelling Leatherman alternative?
Blackjaw may interest buyers who want a black-finished tool with a defined set of built-in implements rather than a system centered on interchangeable bits. It is not yet possible to make a well-supported value or reliability judgment from the reported feature list alone: there is no verified Blackjaw weight, warranty, returns policy or hands-on performance evidence in the available reporting.
For a more established comparison point, Leatherman’s Sidekick page states a 25-year warranty and lists 14 tools, while the Skeletool page states the same warranty for a five-ounce model with a bit driver. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications; current prices and availability can change.
