How many workers were affected?
The Associated Press reported about 1,700 workers affected across two manufacturing sites: roughly 1,200 at a Detroit-area electric-vehicle plant and 550 at an Ultium Cells battery plant in Ohio. The report described these as layoffs, but the counts should not be combined with the separately reported temporary actions as though all were permanent job cuts. Associated Press report.
The Associated Press separately reported, citing The Detroit News for the temporary-layoff figures, 850 workers at the Ohio battery plant and 700 at the Tennessee facility. Those are temporary layoffs, a distinct category from the reported manufacturing-site cuts. Associated Press report.
Which plants and operations were involved?
- Detroit-area, Michigan: About 1,200 jobs at an all-electric vehicle plant were included in the AP-reported cuts.
- Ohio: The Ultium Cells battery plant accounted for 550 workers in the reported manufacturing-site layoffs, plus 850 temporary layoffs reported separately by The Detroit News.
- Spring Hill, Tennessee: The battery facility was associated with 700 temporary layoffs in the separate report.
These actions involved both vehicle assembly and battery-cell production; the facilities and counts do not represent a single uniform plant shutdown.

What was the announced schedule for the battery plants?
The announced plan was for production pauses at the Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, facilities to begin in January 2026 for upgrades, with operations expected to resume by midyear. That was a forecast at the time of the announcement, not confirmation that either facility reopened on schedule. GM’s later financial filings discuss the capacity realignment but do not establish the actual reopening dates.
Why did GM say it was changing EV capacity?
GM said: “In response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning EV capacity.” Ultium Cells also cited recent changes in customer plant demand. These are the company’s stated reasons for the actions.

GM’s 2025 Form 10-K later described slower North American EV demand following U.S. policy changes, including the termination of consumer purchase incentives and less stringent emissions regulations. The filing reported $7.9 billion in GM North America charges associated with the EV capacity realignment. That is a financial charge tied to the realignment, not a count of layoffs. Does “freefalling EV sales” accurately describe the figures?
Not as a quantified claim on the available figures. GM’s July 2026 release reported 714,896 U.S. vehicle sales in the second quarter, down 4.2% year over year. That figure covers all GM vehicles, not EVs alone; GM attributed the decline to a smaller EV market, discontinued vehicles and inventory constraints. What did GM say about pay and benefits?
GM said impacted workers may be eligible to continue receiving a significant portion of regular wages or salary, along with benefits. The statement does not specify an amount or guarantee that every affected worker qualifies; individual eligibility and terms are not detailed in the report. Associated Press report.
