The 2025 model year begins the third generation, which GM explicitly identified as a redesigned, next-generation Terrain. Use the vehicle’s model year—not its registration year or appearance alone—to place it on the timeline.
GMC Terrain generations by model year
| Generation | Model years | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2010–2017 | Cars.com groups these model years as the first generation. The cited sources do not provide a complete year-by-year feature history. Cars.com model-year and generation overview. |
| Second generation | 2018–2024 | Cars.com groups these years together. GMC’s 2018 brochure describes that model as “all-new,” corroborating the redesign boundary, but it does not establish that every later model year had identical equipment. | Third generation | 2025 onward | GM called the 2025 Terrain the third generation of the nameplate. Its announcement establishes the new-generation starting point; Cars.com supplies the broader model-year grouping. GM announcement, August 12, 2024; Cars.com model-year and generation overview. |
What changed at the 2018 and 2025 boundaries?
2018: start of the second-generation grouping
GMC marketed the 2018 Terrain as “all-new.” That supports treating 2018 as a major redesign boundary, while the 2018–2024 span comes from Cars.com’s model-year grouping. The available material does not document every annual change within those years, so check a specific model year’s specifications rather than assuming the entire generation shares one equipment list.
2025: third generation begins
In its August 12, 2024 announcement, GM described the redesigned 2025 Terrain as the next generation and said it represented the nameplate’s third generation. At launch, the announced trim was Elevation; GM said AT4 and Denali would join for the 2026 model year. Trim availability therefore depends on model year, even within the same generation. Why the exact model year and trim matter
The generation label is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking a vehicle’s configuration. GMC’s 2024 specification sheet lists SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims; its 1.5L turbo four-cylinder is rated at 175 horsepower and paired with a nine-speed automatic. AWD is standard on AT4 and Denali and available on SLE and SLT. 2024 GMC Terrain specifications.

For the announced 2025 Elevation, GM lists a 1.5L turbocharged engine rated at 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic, and standard AWD. The different transmission and AWD details show why a comparison should use the exact year and trim, rather than a generation name alone. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. GM’s 2025 Terrain announcement.
That announcement also describes a 15-inch diagonal infotainment display, an 11-inch diagonal driver information center, and more than 15 standard safety and driver-assistance features for the 2025 model. These are manufacturer-stated specifications and feature counts, not independent measurements or safety outcomes.

How to compare two GMC Terrains
- Confirm each model year. Start with the year printed in the vehicle’s documentation; registration year alone may not identify the model year.
- Identify generation and trim. Place each vehicle in the 2010–2017, 2018–2024, or 2025-onward grouping, then verify its trim and the equipment offered for that specific year.
- Check the powertrain and drivetrain. Compare engine, transmission, and whether AWD is standard, available, or absent for the exact configuration.
- Compare the equipment that matters to you. Use the relevant model-year materials to check safety and driver-assistance features, infotainment, and comfort equipment.
- Assess the individual used vehicle. Review service history and inspect its actual condition; generation descriptions and manufacturer specifications cannot establish how a particular vehicle was maintained.
What this timeline does—and does not—tell you
The broad model-year groupings identify the Terrain’s three generations, and the cited manufacturer materials clarify the 2018 and 2025 redesign boundaries. They do not amount to a complete year-by-year change list for 2010–2024 or a reliability ranking. For equipment or specifications beyond the examples above, consult documentation for the exact model year and trim.
