What GM announced in April 2025
On April 11, GM Canada said it was adjusting production at its CAMI Assembly plant, where it built BrightDrop electric delivery vans. The company described the changes as a response to market demand and high inventory, with production schedules being aligned to current demand. The Associated Press reported that Unifor, the union representing workers, estimated around 500 indefinite layoffs following a planned restart on one shift. TechCrunch’s headline summarized the news as GM cutting 500 jobs.
That figure should be read as a reported estimate of planned or indefinite layoffs, not as a verified final count of workers permanently separated. The available reporting does not establish a final tally for all affected employees.
How a production pause became a plant production end
The April workforce adjustment and the eventual end of BrightDrop production were separate developments. In April, the immediate news was a pause and shift adjustment. GM Canada said production had been suspended since May when it announced the later decision on October 21, 2025.

In its October announcement, GM Canada said it would end BrightDrop van production at CAMI and would not transfer it to another site. The company attributed the decision to market demand and said the commercial electric delivery van market had developed more slowly than expected. It also cited changing regulation and the elimination of U.S. tax credits as challenges.
GM Canada president and managing director Kristian Aquilina said the production decision “is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.” That is the company’s stated position; it does not independently establish the relative impact of demand, inventory, regulation, or tax policy on the decision.

What GM’s later delivery figures show
GM’s U.S. delivery table for the third quarter of 2026 provides later context, but it does not explain the 2025 job decisions. The company reported deliveries for a combined category covering Chevrolet BrightDrop 400/600 EV and BrightDrop Zevo 400/600 models:

These figures come from GM’s U.S. delivery release.
