GM ended BrightDrop electric delivery-van production at its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, on October 21, 2025. The plant was still idled in Unifor’s latest located update, dated August 30, 2026; more than 1,000 union members were affected, and no new CAMI product or restart date had been announced in the sources reviewed.
What happened at GM’s CAMI plant?
CAMI Assembly built BrightDrop electric delivery vans in Ingersoll, Ontario. GM confirmed on October 21, 2025, that production there had ended and would not be moved to another site. The company said production had been suspended since May 2025 and that it would assess future opportunities for the facility. GM’s announcement is the company’s account of the decision and its stated reasons.
This was more than the temporary production pause reported earlier in 2025. That April, GM planned to halt production through most of spring and summer amid lower-than-expected BrightDrop demand and high inventory. Unifor then expected the plant to resume on one shift, a forecast that implied roughly 500 indefinite layoffs. That forecast was overtaken by GM’s later decision to end production at CAMI. The Associated Press reported the April pause and forecast.
How many workers were affected?
Unifor said more than 1,000 members of Local 88 were affected and already on layoff when GM confirmed the end of BrightDrop production in October 2025. The union’s statement also criticized the role of U.S. policy and tariffs, a position distinct from GM’s stated explanation.

Later figures are different snapshots, not a single reconciled count. In August 2026, GM Authority reported that around 1,200 workers were initially affected, and that about 1,089 hourly and salaried employees remained on layoff. GM Authority’s report gives the later breakdown as 1,029 hourly employees and roughly 60 salaried workers still on layoff.
Why did GM end production?
GM said the commercial electric delivery-van market developed more slowly than expected, leaving CAMI operating below capacity. It also cited regulatory changes, including the elimination of U.S. tax credits, as making the business more challenging. The company’s October explanation was consistent with its April position that the temporary pause reflected demand and high inventory rather than U.S. tariffs.
Unifor, by contrast, attributed the cancellation partly to U.S. policy changes and tariffs. Those are the company’s and union’s separate explanations; the available statements do not establish a single agreed cause.

What support did laid-off workers receive?
GM’s October 2025 announcement said hourly employees would receive six months of salary and could receive lump-sum payments and other benefits. The later 2026 contract provided a separate, longer-term commitment: eligible laid-off CAMI members’ income-maintenance plan was extended through May 2028. Eligibility and benefit specifics should be confirmed with Unifor or the official agreement materials.
Unifor said members ratified the three-year CAMI agreement on August 30, 2026, with 96.5% support. The agreement covered workers at CAMI and other GM facilities, but it did not name a new product for Ingersoll. Unifor’s ratification announcement describes the terms and facility commitments.

No restart or recall date was announced in the sources reviewed. The agreement commits GM to seek opportunities for CAMI, and gives the plant first consideration for Canadian Armed Forces defence work if GM is awarded that work. This is conditional: it is not a confirmed defence contract or a CAMI production allocation.

The same agreement announced investments at other Ontario facilities: C$144 million for next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra production in Oshawa and C$215 million for a next-generation transmission program in St. Catharines, with that production anticipated to begin in late 2029. Neither investment is a product allocation for CAMI.
What is the latest status of the Ingersoll plant?
In Unifor’s August 30, 2026 update, CAMI remained idled and most members were on indefinite layoff. GM had committed to seek opportunities for the facility, but the sources reviewed contained no announcement of a replacement vehicle or other product, a production restart date, or a worker recall schedule.
