GM’s “new” I-6 diesel is the 3.0L LZ0 Duramax, the second-generation successor to the LM2—not an engine newly announced today. GM lists it at 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, with changes including steel pistons, higher-pressure fuel injectors and a revised turbocharger. The figures are GM-published; its engine page notes the output was tested in a Chevrolet Silverado.
What is GM’s new I-6 diesel?
The LZ0 is a 2,999 cc (183 cu in) inline-six turbo-diesel in GM’s 3.0L Duramax family. GM identifies it as the second generation after the LM2. Its published specifications include a 15.2:1 compression ratio, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, direct injection and a 5,000-rpm maximum engine speed. How much power does the LZ0 make?
GM lists 305 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 495 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 rpm. It says 94% of peak torque is available by 1,500 rpm. These are manufacturer-published ratings, and the engine page identifies the output as tested in a Chevrolet Silverado; they should not be treated as independent test results or as a guarantee that every vehicle application has identical ratings.
What changed from the LM2?
GM’s named LZ0 refinements include a steel-piston design, injectors designed to manage higher fuel pressure with an optimized spray pattern, and a revised turbocharger. GM says the changes help the engine achieve its published output. The oil-pump belt’s validated service interval also increased: GM states 200,000 miles, compared with 150,000 miles previously, a 33% increase. That is GM’s validation interval, not a guarantee of identical service life under every vehicle or operating condition.

For its 2025 Tahoe and Suburban announcement, GM also described a retuned turbo compressor, higher-flow injectors, revised piston-cooling oil jets, Active Thermal Management, sound-absorption materials and a tuned air-induction system. GM described the LZ0’s gains over the LM2 as 10% in horsepower and 7.6% in torque. These are GM’s comparison figures for the engine generations, not an independent measurement of vehicle performance.

Which vehicles offered the LZ0?
GM said the second-generation diesel had previously launched in the Silverado 1500. For the 2025 model year, it announced the LZ0 as an available Tahoe and Suburban option later in production, paired with a 10-speed automatic and offered across retail trims, including Z71 for the first time. Those details apply to the named 2025 vehicles; they do not establish availability in every trim, vehicle or later model year. Check the official specifications for the exact model year and configuration you are considering.
What fuel does the LZ0 use?
GM lists ultra-low sulfur diesel and B20 biodiesel as fuel types for the engine. Its listed emissions-control equipment includes high-pressure and low-pressure EGR, a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reduction on a particulate filter, selective catalytic reduction, and an ammonia slip catalyst. The available specifications do not establish an emissions advantage over another engine.

What maintenance information should owners check?
GM’s 2024 supplement covers LM2 SUV and LZ0 pickup versions. It specifies engine oil meeting dexosD and recommends ACDelco dexosD, and includes engine air cleaner, fuel filter and oil filter replacement-part information.
