General Motors reportedly asked suppliers in early February 2026 to check whether First Brands’ bankruptcy could affect them directly or through their own suppliers. GM said production had not been affected at the time of the call and that it was preparing contingency plans. That was a snapshot of the situation then—not evidence that no later disruption occurred.
What GM reportedly asked suppliers to do
GM held a supplier call during the week before a February 10, 2026 report by GM Authority. The report, citing participants and Crain’s Detroit Business, said GM global chief procurement and supply chain officer Shilpan Amin led the call and urged suppliers to look for both direct and indirect links to First Brands.
That distinction matters. A direct exposure could involve a supplier buying parts from First Brands; an indirect exposure could sit farther down that supplier’s own chain. The reported request was to map possible dependencies. It is not evidence that a particular lower-tier supplier caused a production stoppage.
Was GM vehicle production disrupted?
GM said production had not been affected when the call took place, according to the February report. The company was also assembling contingency plans. The statement describes GM’s position at that time; the report does not establish what happened in later months or quantify any production losses.

The same report said customers had approval to provide a $48 million cash advance for certain operations. It does not identify that sum as GM’s individual contribution, so it should not be treated as money supplied by GM alone.
What support automakers reportedly discussed
A January 27, 2026 GM Authority report said GM, Ford and other automakers were negotiating cash prepayments for future parts shipments. The proposed support was intended to help First Brands maintain operating cash during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. The account documents reported negotiations as of that date, not final terms or proof that a lasting rescue was completed.

A GM spokesperson told the outlet: “We continue to monitor the situation with First Brands closely and are working on contingency plans to avoid any potential interruption to our operations.” That statement expressed the company’s response and preparations; it does not establish the eventual outcome for every GM supply chain.
How First Brands’ bankruptcy progressed
The case later moved beyond the period of uncertainty described in the supplier-call reports. A Trucks, Parts, Service report dated August 25 and updated September 3, 2026 said U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher M. Lopez rejected First Brands’ Chapter 11 plan on August 24. It then reported that the company filed a proposed order to convert the cases to Chapter 7, a liquidation process in which a trustee administers remaining estate assets and creditor distributions.

Those are separate procedural events: rejection of the reorganization plan, filing of a proposed conversion order, and entry of a final conversion order. The cited report does not give a confirmed date for entry of the final order. The BRAKE Report later characterized the case as converted to Chapter 7, but an exact order date should not be inferred from these accounts.
The September-updated report said First Brands had ceased operating as a business by the time its plan was negotiated and had terminated most of its workforce. Judge Lopez described it as “one of the largest aftermarket auto suppliers in the world” before the Chapter 11 cases, and said, “A giant in the automotive industry would no longer exist as it did when it entered bankruptcy.” Those remarks were quoted in the report’s account of his ruling.

Which First Brands businesses and product lines remained?
A September 18, 2026 update from The BRAKE Report described different outcomes across the portfolio:
- Raybestos was sold to Friction One.
- Centric Parts brands StopTech, Posi Quiet and C-TEK were sold to Motorcar Parts of America.
- Brake Parts Inc. and Cardone operations were wound down.
A sale of certain brands is not the same as continued operation of the entire former company. Nor does the report establish that every asset or obligation was resolved; remaining estate assets and creditor distributions fall within the bankruptcy process.

What the reported debt figures do—and do not—show
Octus commentary republished by The BRAKE Report put First Brands’ debt at over $11 billion: $6.2 billion in on-balance-sheet funded debt and $4.6 billion in off-balance-sheet financing tied to affiliate debtors. These are figures attributed to Octus, not an independent calculation in the supplier-call reports.
The commentary also discussed allegations concerning financing arrangements and company funds. Those matters should be described as allegations or investigations, not as adjudicated findings on the basis of that commentary.
What suppliers and GM’s production status can be concluded from the reports
- GM reportedly asked suppliers to look beyond direct vendors and map possible indirect exposure to First Brands.
- At the time of the early-February call, GM said its production had not been affected and that it was preparing contingencies.
- Automakers’ reported prepayment discussions in January were negotiations, not proof of final or enduring support.
- Later reports described First Brands’ Chapter 11 plan rejection and movement toward Chapter 7 liquidation, alongside sales of some brands and wind-downs of other operations.
The available accounts do not establish that First Brands caused a GM production interruption, or that GM’s February status statement remained true indefinitely.
