Consumer Reports describes the 2022 and 2023 models as about average in reliability compared with cars from their respective model years, making them reasonable starting points—not proven leaders. For any used Acadia, confirm its recall status by VIN and assess its records and condition before buying.
Which GMC Acadia years look like the best starting points?
The clearest cautious shortlist is the 2022 and 2023 Acadia. Consumer Reports rates both about average for reliability relative to other vehicles from the same model year. That is a modest, year-level comparison, not a claim that either model is unusually dependable or that every example will be trouble-free. See Consumer Reports’ 2022 Acadia reliability page and its 2023 page.
The evidence does not establish a normalized, complete reliability ranking for every Acadia model year. A secondary site identifies several years as “best,” but its computed rankings are not an official league table or a validated owner-survey result; its surfaced summary does not establish exposure-adjusted rates or show complete calculations. Treat such lists as leads to investigate, not as a definitive buying answer.
What the available model-year evidence says
| Model year | Reliability signal | Recall count shown on the cited page | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Consumer Reports says less reliable than other cars from the same model year. | 6 NHTSA recalls | A cautionary comparative signal, not a verdict on every 2020 Acadia. Source. |
| 2022 | Consumer Reports says about average relative to same-year cars. | 3 NHTSA recalls | A cautious shortlist candidate, not a class-leading reliability finding. Source. |
| 2023 | Consumer Reports says about average relative to same-year cars. | 4 NHTSA recalls | A cautious shortlist candidate; check recall status for the actual vehicle. Source. |
| 2025 | Consumer Reports says much less reliable than other cars from the same model year, based on its latest survey of 2025 Acadia owners. | Not stated on the surfaced Consumer Reports summary | An early owner-survey signal; survey results can change as more information becomes available. Source. |
| 2026 | Consumer Reports predicts much less reliability than average for a new car, based on 2024 and 2025 models plus the GMC brand score. | 1 NHTSA recall | A prediction, not a long-term observed durability result. Source. |
The recall counts above are the counts shown on the cited Consumer Reports pages when surfaced; they can change and do not say whether a particular vehicle is affected or whether a repair has been completed. Some recall information spans multiple Acadia model years. Use the NHTSA recall lookup to check a vehicle’s VIN.

How to read reliability ratings, rankings, and recall information
Consumer Reports model-year comparisons
Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as subscriber-survey information covering 20 potential trouble spots across vehicles from 2000 through 2025. Its current reliability-history page says the charts draw on information from about 380,000 vehicles overall; that is not the Acadia-specific response count. The available summaries do not provide a complete set of Acadia scores or disclose how many owners responded for each year. Read a model-year description as a comparative signal with those limits, not as a guaranteed prediction for an individual car. Consumer Reports reliability-history scope.
J.D. Power’s dependability result
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study lists the GMC Acadia as “Highest Ranked” in its segment. That is a result from a particular study, with its own population, period, and method. It does not establish that every Acadia model year has the same long-term reliability, nor does it directly cancel out Consumer Reports’ model-year comparisons. J.D. Power’s 2025 study results.

- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
Complaints and recalls are different evidence
NHTSA complaint narratives are reports submitted by vehicle owners. A recall is a manufacturer or regulator campaign for a specified condition and affected population. Raw complaint totals do not, by themselves, provide a failure rate: the available comparisons do not establish a verified exposure denominator for each model year. A recall count likewise does not identify an individual vehicle’s eligibility or repair status; the VIN lookup is the useful check for a prospective purchase.

How to evaluate a used Acadia before buying
- Use the year rating as a filter, not a decision. The 2022 and 2023 are reasonable years to include in a search based on Consumer Reports’ about-average summaries, but the rating cannot establish a particular vehicle’s condition.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Enter the vehicle’s VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. Confirm any listed recall repair with the seller or servicing dealer; a model-year recall count cannot tell you whether the work is complete.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for a coherent service history and investigate gaps or repeated repairs rather than assuming a favorable year-level rating guarantees good upkeep.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the exact vehicle and report any concerns before you commit. A survey rating cannot substitute for an inspection of the car you may buy.
