General Motors was reported to be cutting about 1,700 manufacturing jobs at sites in Michigan and Ohio in October 2025, including roughly 1,200 at a Detroit-area electric-vehicle plant and 550 at an Ohio battery plant. The Associated Press reported the breakdown on October 29, citing the Detroit News and GM confirmation. Separate temporary layoffs in Ohio and Tennessee were reported as well and are not part of that roughly 1,700 figure.
How many GM jobs were being cut?
The Associated Press reported about 1,700 job cuts at GM manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio on October 29, 2025. Its breakdown was approximately 1,200 jobs at a Detroit-area EV plant and 550 at the Ultium Cells battery plant in Ohio. The headline total is rounded; it should not be treated as a precisely audited company-wide tally. Associated Press reporting
The same report described additional temporary layoffs: 850 workers in Ohio and 700 in Tennessee. Those temporary layoffs are separate from the approximately 1,700 reported job cuts; combining them would blur two different employment actions.

The contemporaneous report identified the Detroit-area facility as an EV plant and the Ohio facility as the Ultium Cells battery plant. It did not provide a more specific Detroit plant name in the cited breakdown.

GM said affected workers could be eligible for a significant portion of their regular wages or salary, along with benefits. The company also expected operations to resume by mid-2026 after upgrades; those were company statements and expectations reported at the time, not confirmation here of the eventual worker outcomes or restart. Why was GM cutting EV and battery jobs?
GM attributed the move to slower near-term demand for electric vehicles and changing regulation. In a statement to the Associated Press on October 29, 2025, the company said: “In response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning EV capacity.” Ultium Cells separately said it was adjusting production to reflect changes in customer-plant demand. GM’s January 8, 2026 Form 8-K later described a broader North American capacity adjustment. The company said EV demand began slowing in 2025 after consumer tax incentives ended and emissions regulations became less stringent. It also described reducing capacity by shifting Orion, Michigan, from EV production to full-size SUVs and pickups with internal-combustion engines, and selling its interest in the Lansing Ultium Cells facility to LG Energy Solution. In the same SEC filing, GM reported approximately $1.6 billion in EV-related charges for the three months ended September 30, 2025. It said it expected approximately $6.0 billion in EV-related charges for the three months ended December 31, 2025. How do later battery plans fit into the story?
On September 29, 2026, GM announced plans for Ultium Cells to make lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic cells at Spring Hill, Tennessee. GM projected that construction and facility upgrades would be completed in 2028 and create 500 new jobs. Those are company projections, not evidence that the expected hiring or production has already happened, and they do not independently verify the result of the earlier production pause. GM also claimed the planned LMR cells would offer 33% greater energy density than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at comparable cost. That is GM’s stated comparison, not an independent test result. The announcement signals a planned change in battery technology and investment, rather than a simple end to GM’s battery ambitions.
A historical figure needs similar context: in January 2022, GM projected that its Lansing battery plant would employ more than 1,700 people once fully operational. That was a forecast made at the time, not proof of the later workforce level or a count of jobs lost in 2025. GM announcement, January 14, 2022
