But it never became a production vehicle for consumers: Cruise indefinitely delayed its development in June 2024, and GM later stopped funding Cruise robotaxi development. GM completed its acquisition of Cruise in February 2025, shifting the work toward autonomous technology and driver-assistance systems for personal vehicles.
What made the Cruise Origin different?
Revealed in January 2020, the Origin was a collaboration among General Motors, Cruise, and Honda. The partners conceived it as a purpose-built vehicle for shared, driverless rides. Rather than adapt a privately owned car, the design was intended to serve a ride-hailing fleet, with an interior and vehicle layout organized around passengers.
GM-related petition material described the intended operation as dedicated SAE Level 4 automation. That describes the program’s intended capability; it does not establish that the Origin received regulatory approval for commercial service or that it operated as a deployed robotaxi.
GM’s early materials included production planning, but those plans are historical, not current commitments. The vehicle’s future-facing significance lies in the ambition to build a purpose-designed autonomous fleet vehicle—not in evidence that such a vehicle reached the market.

What happened to the Cruise Origin?
June 2024: development indefinitely delayed
GM’s 2024 Form 10-K says Cruise indefinitely delayed Origin development in June 2024. GM recorded $631 million in charges related to the delay, primarily non-cash. December 10, 2024: GM ends funding for Cruise robotaxi development
GM announced that it would no longer fund Cruise’s robotaxi development work, citing the time and resources needed to scale the business and competition in the robotaxi market. The company said it would combine most Cruise and GM technical teams to focus on autonomous technology and advanced driver-assistance systems for personal vehicles. GM chair and CEO Mary Barra described the rationale as “the deeper integration of our teams, paired with GM’s strong brands, scale, and manufacturing strength.” GM’s December 2024 announcement

February 4, 2025: Cruise becomes part of GM
GM said it completed its acquisition of Cruise on February 4, 2025. The announcement described Cruise’s role as collaboration with GM on autonomous-vehicle technology and driver-assistance systems for personal vehicles. That is a change in corporate strategy; it is not evidence that all autonomous-driving development ended. GM’s February 2025 announcement
Was the Cruise Origin ever produced, and can you buy one?
The official disclosures cited here do not establish that the Origin entered production or retail sale. They also do not provide a current production plan. It should therefore be treated as a delayed robotaxi program, not a consumer vehicle available to buy. The available disclosures do not expressly say that every Origin asset or design was legally cancelled, destroyed, or could never be reused.

How the Origin fits into GM’s autonomy strategy

The distinction matters: a driver-assistance system for a personal vehicle is not the same product or operating model as a vehicle designed to provide driverless rides. GM’s shift away from funding Cruise robotaxi development does not, on its own, mean the company abandoned every form of autonomy work.

GM’s 2024 Form 10-K also described regulatory and legal actions involving Cruise. These disclosures concern the company’s response to the October 2023 accident and related reporting—not a finding that the Origin caused that accident.
