GMC’s 2024 truck lineup covered four distinct needs: midsize off-road driving, full-size everyday utility, heavy-duty hauling and all-electric performance. The models that stand out are the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, the varied Sierra 1500 range, the Sierra HD’s premium and off-road versions, and the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. Their capability figures below are GMC specifications or estimates—not independent test results—and towing ratings depend on configuration.
At a glance: which 2024 GMC truck fits which job?
| Truck | Best suited to | What makes it notable |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition | Midsize off-road use | Factory-installed lift, 35-inch tires, underbody protection and AEV bumpers |
| 2024 Sierra 1500 | Full-size general-purpose use, from work to luxury | Eight trims, multiple powertrains and available MultiPro tailgate and CarbonPro bed |
| 2024 Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD | Heavy hauling, with premium and off-road options | Multiple cab and trim choices; GMC cited up to 36,000 pounds of trailering for a 3500HD configuration |
| 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 | All-electric full-size pickup use | GM-estimated range of 440 miles, plus electric power and utility features |
These distinctions are more useful than treating one truck as the universal best choice. Pick by truck size and task first, then compare the specific configuration’s equipment and ratings.
Why the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition stands out for trails
GMC introduced the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition for the 2024 model year in a July 6, 2023 announcement. It combines a midsize footprint with factory off-road hardware developed with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV).
- GMC-listed equipment includes 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires and a factory-installed 4.5-inch lift.
- Five underbody skid plates, AEV steel bumpers, recovery points and beadlock-capable wheels add trail-oriented protection and recovery equipment. The front bumper is winch-capable.
- GMC states 12.2 inches of ground clearance and approach, breakover and departure angles of 38.2, 26.9 and 26.0 degrees, respectively.
- The Baja drive mode adds launch control.
GMC described the ground-clearance comparison as based on its latest competitive data available when the announcement was published; it is not an independent comparison test. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of performance on every trail. GMC’s Canyon AT4X AEV Edition announcement has the original equipment details.

Why the Sierra 1500 is the broadest 2024 choice
The Sierra 1500’s range runs from work-oriented to luxury and off-road models. GMC lists Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims, with an AT4X AEV Edition also available. That range makes the 1500 the flexible pick for shoppers who need a full-size truck but have not settled on a single level of comfort or capability.
Features across the range
GMC’s 2024 factsheet highlights standard GMC Pro Safety, an available six-function MultiPro tailgate and an optional CarbonPro composite bed. The infotainment system’s 13.4-inch screen is standard on SLE and above. Availability varies by trim and configuration; the factsheet is the place to confirm equipment for a particular build. GMC’s 2024 Sierra 1500 factsheet lists the trims, equipment and powertrains.

Read towing figures as configuration-specific
For example, GMC rates the 2024 Sierra 1500 TurboMax at a maximum trailering capacity of 9,500 pounds in 2WD and 9,200 pounds in 4WD. Those are manufacturer maximums for the stated powertrain and drive configurations, not ratings that apply to every Sierra 1500. Cab, bed, drivetrain, options and load affect a truck’s towing and payload limits.
Why the Sierra HD matters for heavy hauling
The 2024 Sierra HD family includes the 2500HD and 3500HD. GMC’s launch materials list Regular, Extended and Crew Cab configurations, and dual rear wheels are available on the 3500HD. The available trim range includes Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate; AT4X was added later in the model year.

Choose the HD trim for the equipment you need
GMC positioned the Denali Ultimate as the luxury choice and the AT4X as the off-road-oriented version. Both sit within a heavy-duty lineup, so a trim name alone does not establish a truck’s towing or payload rating. Match the truck’s exact cab, bed, drivetrain and equipment to the job.
Maximum trailering figures are not universal ratings
GMC cited up to 36,000 pounds of trailering for a 2024 Sierra 3500HD configuration and up to 21,900 pounds for a 2024 Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab configuration. These are manufacturer maximums tied to particular configurations; they should not be read as the rating for every truck in either series. GMC’s brochure says printed specifications and ratings are approximations and configurations differ. Before towing, verify the specific vehicle’s trailering label and owner’s manual. Why the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 is the electric flagship
GMC announced the first customer deliveries of the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 on August 21, 2024. The company listed a GM-estimated range of 440 miles, up to 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft in Max Power Mode, and up to 10,000 pounds of towing. These are GMC’s figures for this edition, not independent test results.
The truck’s announced features include CrabWalk, a MultiPro MidGate and 10.2 kW of off-board power capability. GMC said the range estimate came from its analytical projection and that actual range can vary with temperature, terrain, battery age, loading, use and maintenance. EPA estimates were not yet available in the announcement, so the 440-mile figure should not be treated as an EPA rating or compared directly with EPA-rated figures without a consistent rating basis. Details are in GMC’s Sierra EV delivery announcement.

How to choose among the 2024 GMC trucks
- Start with size and task. Consider the Canyon for a midsize truck with factory trail equipment, the Sierra 1500 for full-size general use, the Sierra HD for heavier towing or payload needs, and the Sierra EV if an all-electric full-size pickup fits your use.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. Compare the Sierra’s available gasoline and diesel choices with the Sierra EV’s battery-electric powertrain. For an EV, charging access and typical routes matter alongside the advertised range and the method used to estimate it.
- Verify the exact capability rating. A maximum towing number is not a blanket rating for every trim. Check the vehicle’s configuration and, for HD towing, consult its trailering label and owner’s manual.
- Prioritize the equipment you will use. The Canyon AT4X AEV and Sierra HD AT4X are the off-road-oriented picks; Denali Ultimate versions emphasize luxury; the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 offers electric power and features such as off-board power.
What these 2024 highlights do—and do not—tell you
These are retrospective highlights of GMC’s 2024 model-year trucks, based on the manufacturer’s announcements, factsheets and specifications. They do not establish which truck is best in an independent driving comparison, or provide reliability, sales or owner-satisfaction findings. They also do not establish current used prices, remaining new stock or local availability; those require a current, location-specific check.
