The appointment is broader than an autonomous-driving hire. GM assigned Anderson responsibility for the end-to-end lifecycle of its gasoline and electric vehicles, including hardware, software, services and user experience. In practical terms, GM is placing a technologist with experience in autonomy and software at the center of how it develops and integrates its entire vehicle portfolio.
What Anderson’s new GM role covers
GM announced the appointment on May 12, 2025. Anderson reports to GM President Mark Reuss and works between the company’s Mountain View Tech Center in California and its Global Tech Center in Michigan.

The chief product officer position was newly created. Its scope includes:
- Gasoline-powered and electric vehicles
- Vehicle hardware and architecture
- Embedded software and software-defined features
- Digital services
- Customer-facing user experience
- The full product lifecycle, from development through the ownership experience
That scope matters because it does not make Anderson GM’s head of autonomous driving. His formal mandate is the whole vehicle product, not a single advanced-technology division. GM said the hire should help shorten development cycles, connect hardware and software more effectively, and create a more seamless experience for customers.
Anderson’s background spans Tesla, Aurora and MIT
Anderson brings experience from several parts of the automotive technology industry.

Tesla Model X and Autopilot
Before co-founding Aurora, Anderson worked at Tesla. He led the design, development and launch of the Model X, then led the team responsible for delivering Tesla Autopilot.
That combination is relevant to GM’s product strategy. The Model X work involved taking a complex vehicle from development into production, while Autopilot required the integration of sensors, computing, software, vehicle systems and driver interaction. Those are different challenges from running a traditional automotive engineering program, but they overlap with GM’s goal of treating the vehicle as an integrated hardware-and-software product.
Aurora’s autonomous-trucking business
Anderson co-founded Aurora in 2017 and served as its chief product officer. GM’s leadership biography says he helped lead the company through the launch of a commercial, fully driverless trucking service.
His experience at Aurora gives him a background in turning autonomy research into a commercial product with demanding safety, operational and business requirements. It does not, however, establish that GM hired him to bring Aurora technology to GM or that the two companies entered a new technology-licensing arrangement.

Anderson holds both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in robotics from MIT. Earlier in his career, he developed MIT’s Intelligent Co-Pilot, a semi-autonomous vehicle safety system.
The system was designed to monitor driver performance and assist with collision avoidance and control of a safe region around the vehicle. That work helps explain Anderson’s long-standing focus on the interaction between human drivers, vehicle automation and safety systems.
How the Aurora-to-GM transition unfolded
The transition was closely timed with a major Aurora milestone.
- May 6, 2025: Anderson notified Aurora that he would resign as chief product officer.
- May 8, 2025: Aurora disclosed the resignation in a Form 8-K.
- June 1, 2025: His resignation as Aurora’s chief product officer became effective.
- June 2, 2025: Anderson started as GM’s executive vice president of global product and chief product officer.
- August 31, 2025: His resignation from Aurora’s board became effective.
The timing placed Anderson’s departure immediately after Aurora’s commercial-driverless-trucking milestone and immediately before his GM start date. That is an important chronology, but it is not evidence by itself that GM acquired Aurora technology, formed a commercial partnership with Aurora or plans to use Aurora’s Driver system.

Why GM created the position
GM’s stated rationale was to improve the way the company creates products, rather than simply add another executive to its autonomy organization. The company emphasized faster development, tighter hardware-software integration and a better customer experience.
That approach reflects a problem facing established automakers: a vehicle’s physical platform may take years to design and manufacture, while software can be updated, refined and expanded much more quickly. A product leader responsible for both sides can potentially make decisions about hardware architecture, computing capacity, software features, digital services and the user interface as parts of one system.
In a later GM Careers interview, Anderson described this connected view of the product. He discussed electrification, autonomy, software-defined vehicles, hardware design and user experience as related parts of the same system. He also argued that software can continue adding value after a vehicle is purchased, even though the underlying hardware changes more slowly.
GM’s later GM Empower material broadened that picture further by connecting the product organization to electrification, batteries, energy management and bidirectional charging. That suggests Anderson’s remit reaches beyond autonomous driving or infotainment. It includes the vehicle’s role as an energy and software platform, including how electric vehicles interact with charging systems and potentially with the wider energy network.

GM Careers later described Anderson as leading a team of more than 20,000 people. That figure illustrates the scale of the job: this is an organization-wide product leadership position, not a small advanced-research assignment.
The challenge is to make a large automaker operate with more of the integration and iteration associated with software companies without losing the manufacturing discipline, regulatory compliance and safety processes required for road vehicles. Anderson’s résumé gives him experience in software-intensive vehicle development, but GM will have to apply that experience across a much larger and more varied portfolio than the one handled by a startup autonomy company.
GM’s later filings confirm he remained in the role
GM’s annual report filed in 2026 listed Anderson as executive vice president, global product, and chief product officer as of January 27, 2026. The company’s 2026 proxy statement also listed him among its named executive officers and described the same broad responsibility for gas and electric vehicles, hardware, software, services and user experience.
Those filings support saying that Anderson remained in the GM role in the latest researched corporate records. They do not establish his future tenure, a further expansion of his authority or a succession plan for GM’s chief executive officer. The appointment should not be presented as evidence of any of those outcomes.

What GM paid Anderson
GM’s 2026 proxy statement reported that Anderson’s 2025 target direct compensation was $16 million. That package included a $1 million base salary, target short-term incentive compensation and long-term equity.
The proxy also described $24 million in new-hire awards:
| Award | Value | Terms described in the proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Performance cash award | $3 million | Vested on December 15, 2025, based on first-six-month performance indicators |
| Restricted stock units | $10 million | Scheduled to vest in two equal portions on July 29, 2026 and July 29, 2027, subject to continued employment |
| Performance stock units | $11 million | Scheduled to vest, if earned, on February 6, 2027, subject to continued employment |
Anderson’s total 2025 compensation was reported as $40,278,963 in GM’s executive compensation table. That is the total compensation figure under the proxy’s accounting presentation. It should not be described as $40.3 million in ordinary annual cash salary. The figure includes the accounting treatment of equity and other compensation elements.

What the appointment does—and does not—signal
The strongest interpretation is that GM wants a single senior product leader to connect several transitions that are often managed separately:
- Vehicle electrification: EV platforms, batteries, charging and energy management
- Software-defined vehicles: Features and services that can improve through software after production
- Automation: Driver-assistance and autonomous-vehicle technologies
- Customer experience: The interfaces and digital services that connect drivers to the vehicle
- Product execution: Faster development and better coordination between engineering disciplines
Anderson’s background makes him a credible bridge among those areas. He has worked on a production vehicle, a driver-assistance system, an autonomous-driving startup and robotics research. GM’s role description makes clear that his assignment is to apply that experience across the entire portfolio.
Several more specific claims would go beyond the available evidence:
- The hire does not prove that GM and Aurora signed a new technology-licensing deal.
- It does not prove that GM will use Aurora’s Driver technology.
- It does not mean Anderson will run a GM robotaxi program.
- It does not identify a specific future GM vehicle launch.
- It does not make Anderson GM’s autonomous-driving chief.
- It does not establish a CEO succession plan.
Those possibilities would require separate support from a later official announcement or corporate filing. The confirmed news is already significant: GM created a broad product organization and gave its leadership to someone whose career sits at the intersection of automotive engineering, robotics, autonomy and software.
Why the hire matters for GM’s future vehicles
GM has spent years managing electrification, advanced driver assistance, connected services and traditional vehicle programs at the same time. Anderson’s appointment creates a senior point of responsibility for deciding how those capabilities fit together in a product customers can buy and use.
The outcome will depend less on Anderson’s résumé than on whether GM can turn the organizational change into faster, more reliable execution. That includes choosing which software belongs on which vehicles, providing enough computing and electrical capacity for future updates, making interfaces easier to use, and ensuring that new capabilities meet automotive safety and regulatory requirements.
For now, the appointment is best understood as a product and software-integration move with autonomy expertise behind it—not as a narrowly defined autonomous-driving hire or proof of a new Aurora-GM technology partnership.
