In an October 5, 2026, interview reported by Quartz, GM vice president of propulsion engineering Mike Anderson said the company wants to respond to customer demand. His remarks describe a direction, not a product launch.
What GM said about future hybrids
Anderson told CNBC that hybrids were “part of the plan” for GM’s U.S. lineup. Asked about timing, he declined to provide one. The October 5, 2026, report names no upcoming vehicles and gives no prices, specifications, or confirmed introduction date.
Anderson framed the plan as a response to customers: “We’re not tone deaf to our customers. We know what they want and we want to give that to them as quickly as we can.” That is a statement of intent; it does not confirm that a particular customer request or vehicle configuration will be offered.
He also said GM could combine its own engineering with third-party suppliers, with the balance depending on cost and vehicle segment. Anderson explained the company’s approach this way: “We’re deliberate because, usually for strategic reasons, we need to control our own destiny.” The interview did not identify a specific hybrid system or supplier arrangement.

- ✅Batter dimensions: 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
- With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
When are GM hybrids coming, and which models will get them?
The October 2026 interview provides no confirmed launch date and names no planned models. GM has not announced a roster or schedule in the reporting, so estimates about which vehicles might be first should not be treated as company commitments.
Quartz recounted earlier GM statements about plug-in hybrids (PHEVs): the company announced plans in mid-2024 to introduce PHEVs by 2027, and CEO Mary Barra said in January 2026 that GM was evaluating PHEVs and conventional hybrids and that a handful were coming, without a schedule. Those earlier statements provide context, but Anderson’s October remarks do not confirm a timetable.

AutoForecast Solutions, an outside forecasting firm, projected that GM could begin selling PHEVs sometime between late 2027 and early 2028, potentially across vehicle segments, according to Quartz. That is a forecast—not a date, vehicle list, or commitment from GM.
Does GM currently sell a hybrid?
Quartz reported on October 5, 2026, that GM then sold one hybrid variant: the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. It also described the discontinued Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid as GM’s most notable earlier hybrid effort. The E-Ray is a hybrid variant of a sports car; its presence does not mean GM already has a broad hybrid range.

How hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles differ
The labels describe different ways of combining or using power sources. GM’s reported plan does not yet specify which technology it will use in future models.
- Conventional hybrid: Combines an internal-combustion engine with an electric motor and battery. It does not require plugging in to charge.
- Plug-in hybrid (PHEV): Combines an engine and electric drive with a battery that can be charged from an external power source. It can drive on electric power for some distance, but the report supplies no range or charging details for future GM vehicles.
- Battery-electric vehicle (BEV): Runs on electric power stored in a rechargeable battery and must be plugged in to replenish that battery.
GM’s earlier PHEV comments and its broader October reference to hybrids should not be collapsed into a single confirmed product plan. The company has not said which upcoming models, if any, will be conventional hybrids rather than plug-in hybrids.

Why hybrids are in the conversation now
Quartz reported Cox Automotive figures showing U.S. hybrid sales rose 23% year over year in the second quarter of 2026 and hybrids accounted for 16.3% of U.S. vehicle sales in that quarter. EVs represented about 5.8% over the same period. Quartz characterized compact crossover and midsize segments as having the fastest hybrid growth.
These figures describe the market in that quarter; they do not establish why GM made its decision or predict how any future GM model will perform. The reporting does not provide model-level specifications or a basis for comparing a future GM hybrid with current vehicles.
