GM is not removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from every vehicle. The redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will include both systems in a new interface, according to GM. That pickup announcement does not, however, signal a broad reversal of the company’s reported North American strategy for future electric vehicles, where GM’s native infotainment system remains the direction for most models.
What GM’s 2027 pickup announcement changes
In a September 15, 2026 interview, GM said its new interface for the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside vehicle functions. Michael Wahlstrom, GM’s Executive Director of Software Product Management, said: “People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they’re so user-centric.” GM News, September 15, 2026.
This is a notable change to the pickup story, not proof that the systems will be available across GM’s entire lineup. GM’s announcement concerns those redesigned light-duty pickups; it does not settle equipment for other model lines, trims, powertrains, or markets.
Is GM still dropping CarPlay and Android Auto from EVs?
The pickup news does not establish a reversal of GM’s broader North American EV approach. A September 26, 2026 report from GM Authority says the strategy remains divided: phone mirroring is offered in internal-combustion vehicles, while most future EVs are expected to use GM’s native infotainment path instead. This is secondary reporting about the broader portfolio, not a universal promise covering every EV, exception, or country.

The practical answer is therefore vehicle-specific. GM’s plans differ by vehicle line and powertrain, and the available information does not establish whether or when CarPlay or Android Auto will come to any particular future EV.
What replaces phone mirroring in some GM vehicles?
On select vehicles, GM offers Google built-in, which integrates Google apps and services into the vehicle rather than mirroring a phone’s interface. Chevrolet’s Google built-in information notes that some features may require a service plan or data plan after the initial connectivity period. Requirements and terms can vary; this does not mean every Google built-in feature is paid or that all vehicles have identical connectivity arrangements.

Native infotainment and phone mirroring are different approaches. If you rely on apps and services from your phone through CarPlay or Android Auto, the presence of Google built-in alone does not confirm that either mirroring system is available.

- Start with the exact vehicle. Check the model year, model, trim, and powertrain—not just the brand or a general statement about GM.
- Confirm the country. Equipment and availability can differ by market.
- Check current manufacturer specifications. Chevrolet says wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are available on certain vehicles, not all vehicles. Its CarPlay and Android Auto support pages explain connecting a phone, but their 2026 system instructions do not show that every 2026-or-newer GM model includes these features.
- Verify with the dealer before purchase. Ask whether the particular vehicle supports CarPlay and Android Auto, and whether each connection is wired or wireless. Request confirmation for the vehicle you intend to buy.
Infotainment matters to buyers: GM News says it ranks among the top three purchase drivers for new-car buyers, citing the 2025 US Ipsos NVCS covering October 2024 through June 2025. That helps explain why GM’s pickup interface announcement is consequential, but it does not establish which equipment any individual vehicle has.
