There is no substantiated, cross-generation list of common Swift failures or failure rates in the official material available. Check the service history against the right manual
Ask for service invoices or records, the recorded odometer readings and dates, ownership history, and any insurance or repair-claim information the seller can provide. Maruti Suzuki says the periodic maintenance schedule is in the owner’s manual and advises more frequent maintenance checks for a second-hand car. Use the manual for the car’s specific model year and variant, rather than assuming that one Swift schedule applies to every generation. Inspect the car in a practical sequence
1. Before you view it
Request the registration details, service records, ownership history and available insurance or claim information. Ask the seller to allow an independent inspection and a road test. Compare dates and odometer readings across the records, and note missing documentation to discuss with the seller or inspector.

2. Examine the body, structure and tyres
In good light, look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, corrosion, signs of water ingress and evidence of repairs to structural areas. Check whether the tyres are wearing unevenly. These can warrant questions about past damage, repairs or alignment, but do not diagnose the cause from appearance alone. Ask for repair records if you see signs of previous work.
3. Check the car from a cold start
If possible, arrange to see the car before it has been driven that day. Watch the instrument-panel warning lamps at ignition, then check which remain illuminated after the engine starts. Note whether it starts readily, listen for unusual engine noise, look for visible fluid leaks and observe unusual exhaust smoke. Check fluid levels only where it is safe to do so and follow the vehicle’s manual.

Test the lights, windows, locks, infotainment and air conditioning. If the AC cools poorly, Maruti Suzuki advises checking for refrigerant leakage and having AC maintenance experts assess the system. Do not treat a refrigerant top-up without diagnosis as a repair.
4. Road-test the car
Drive in conditions that let you assess the car safely, and have the seller’s permission. Notice whether it tracks predictably, brakes evenly and shifts smoothly. Listen for suspension noises and watch for steering pull, abnormal vibration or clutch and transmission behavior that feels poor. Test the air conditioning after the car has warmed. Any symptom needs diagnosis; a road test cannot establish that it is a known Swift-wide defect.

5. Get a professional inspection and campaign check
If you cannot assess the car confidently, ask a qualified independent mechanic or authorized workshop for a pre-purchase inspection. Request clear findings on urgent safety concerns, near-term maintenance and estimated repairs, then compare those findings with the service records and the correct owner’s manual. Give an authorized Maruti Suzuki dealer the chassis number and ask for applicable open and completed campaign information.

Do not choose by generation reputation alone: the evidence available does not support a reliability ranking by generation. Compare the actual cars on records, inspection findings and remaining work.
