Germany has granted Mercedes-Benz a nationwide exemption to test turquoise marker lights on vehicles using its DRIVE PILOT automated-driving system. The approval, announced March 5, 2025, covers testing—not general consumer use or series production—and was initially valid through July 2028.
What do the turquoise lights on a Mercedes mean?
When the lights are illuminated, they indicate that DRIVE PILOT is active. Mercedes-Benz says the continuous turquoise light is intended to help other road users recognize the system’s status and help traffic authorities and police identify when it is operating.
The marker lights are integrated into the vehicle’s front and rear lamps and the indicators in its exterior mirrors. They are not a separate consumer accessory announced for purchase or retrofit.
What Germany approved—and what it did not
The Stuttgart Regional Council granted Mercedes-Benz an exemption for nationwide testing of the special marker lights. Mercedes-Benz said the approval was initially valid until July 2028 and that the lights would be used on test vehicles. The company said findings from those tests could contribute to a legal framework for future series use; that possibility is not approval for production vehicles to use the lights.

Marker-light permission is separate from DRIVE PILOT approval
The German exemption is for external signaling lights. It is not a new approval for the car to drive itself. DRIVE PILOT has a separate system approval: Mercedes-Benz said its updated system was approved by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority to operate at up to 95 km/h in the right motorway lane under specified conditions. The company identified the S-Class and EQS as German models for the updated system.
DRIVE PILOT is a conditional automated-driving system, not driverless operation. Mercedes-Benz states that a driver remains necessary and must be ready to take over when prompted. The existence of DRIVE PILOT-equipped production models does not establish that those cars have the turquoise test lights.

Why did Mercedes-Benz choose turquoise?
Mercedes-Benz says turquoise is distinguishable from existing vehicle lights and traffic signals, including traffic lights and emergency lighting, while remaining visible enough for road users to recognize promptly. The company also reports that studies with test subjects favored turquoise over other colors on physiological and psychological factors.
The company’s announcement does not identify those studies or provide their methods, sample size, or numerical results. The color-selection finding is therefore a Mercedes-Benz-reported claim, not a published statistic with enough detail to independently assess.

Can you buy a Mercedes with the turquoise lights?
Mercedes-Benz’s announcement describes integrated lights on test vehicles, not a retail option, retrofit kit, or replacement-light product. It does not establish that customers can order the marker lights on an S-Class or EQS.
Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer, Development & Purchasing Markus Schäfer described marker lights and communication between the vehicle and its surroundings as “the next evolutionary milestone for Mercedes-Benz.”
