Recent German breakdown and inspection data do not support a blanket verdict that German cars are unreliable. Some German models perform well in specific age groups, while others fare poorly. But breakdowns, inspection defects and maintenance costs measure different things—and the available evidence does not establish why the reputation began or prove that a German model costs less to own over its lifetime than a comparable alternative.
What does “high maintenance” actually mean?
It can refer to at least three separate outcomes. A car might avoid roadside breakdowns but still need frequent workshop visits, fail a periodic inspection, or cost more to service and repair. A statistic about one outcome cannot establish the others.
- Roadside breakdowns: ADAC counts incidents that led to its roadside assistance. That captures a particular kind of failure, not every fault or workshop visit.
- Inspection defects: TÜV Report records selected defects found during German periodic inspections. “Significant or dangerous defects” means a car needs repair and reinspection to receive its inspection sticker; it is not a count or price of all repairs.
- Ownership cost: Repair bills and scheduled maintenance costs need their own cost data. A low breakdown rate or defect rate does not show that a car is inexpensive to maintain.
Keeping those measures separate is essential to judging the reputation. ADAC’s 2026 breakdown analysis and the 2026 TÜV Report summary provide evidence about breakdowns and inspection defects, respectively; neither alone settles lifetime ownership cost.
Why did German cars get this reputation?
The available evidence does not establish when or why German cars acquired a high-maintenance reputation. It does not verify explanations involving engineering complexity, labor rates, parts prices, post-warranty failures, owner behavior or local service networks. Those explanations may be worth investigating, but they should not be presented as proven causes here.

It is also important not to treat questions about German cars in the United States as answers about the origin of the reputation. The current breakdown and inspection findings below are German-market evidence; they cannot, by themselves, explain perceptions in another country.
What do the latest German breakdown figures show?
ADAC’s 2026 Pannenstatistik analyzes breakdowns from 2025. It covers 158 vehicle series from 27 manufacturers, with included incidents involving vehicles aged two to nine years—first registered from 2016 through 2023—and subject to ADAC’s model-population thresholds. Because the measure counts cases that led to ADAC roadside assistance, it does not represent every defect, repair or owner complaint.

A depleted 12-volt battery accounted for 45.4% of breakdowns in that 2025 dataset, compared with 44.9% the previous year. That is a fleet-wide result, not a German-brand-specific one. It also illustrates why a breakdown statistic should be read as a measure of failure events, not as a ranking of total maintenance expense.
ADAC says Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW Group brands perform consistently well in its breakdown analysis, while results vary by vehicle series and registration year. Its class-level performer lists include examples such as BMW X2 and Mini in certain combustion-car cohorts, and Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Mercedes A-Class, VW Golf and VW T-Roc. These are not guarantees for every model year, engine or variant.

ADAC also reports a powertrain comparison: among four-year-old vehicles in its 2025 data, electric cars had a breakdown index (PKZ) of 6.5, compared with 12.5 for combustion cars. ADAC attributes the difference to electric cars having fewer wear-prone components, while noting that their low-voltage electrical systems can still cause breakdowns. This is a comparison of powertrains, not German brands against other countries’ brands.
Which German models look strong in TÜV inspection data?
The TÜV Report offers a different view: the share of inspected vehicles with significant defects in particular age bands. Its 2026 summary draws on nearly 9.5 million inspections carried out from July 2024 through June 2025 and covers 246 models across six age classes. The rates below describe inspection defects, not roadside breakdown likelihood or repair costs.

| Model | Age band | Significant-defect rate | What the figure measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes B-Class | 2–3 years | 3.0% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026 |
| VW T-Roc | 2–3 years | 3.0% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026 |
| BMW 1 Series | 2–3 years | 3.3% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026 |
| Audi Q2 | 4–5 years | 4.5% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026 |
| VW T-Roc | 6–7 years | 6.7% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026; the lowest rate in that age group |
| Audi Q2 | 6–7 years | 7.5% | Share with significant defects in the TÜV Report 2026 |
These results make the VW T-Roc, Mercedes B-Class and BMW 1 Series examples of German models with strong results in particular inspection age bands—not universal recommendations. Inspection samples reflect the cars presented and their condition, including the effects of age and maintenance history. A rate in one band cannot predict the result for every generation or an individual used car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do the same data show German cars performing poorly?
Yes, for some models and age groups. The BMW 5/6 Series sits at the bottom of multiple TÜV age bands: its significant-defect rate is 21.5% at four to five years, 29.9% at eight to nine years, and 32.1% at ten to eleven years in the report. These are inspection findings for the age groups shown, not evidence that every BMW 5 or 6 Series has those defects or that its repairs cost a particular amount.

The contrast with stronger-performing models is a reason to avoid a brand-wide verdict. Model, age band and the specific measure all matter; a positive result for one series does not erase a poor result for another.
Do German cars cost more to maintain?
The evidence here does not establish that German models have higher or lower lifetime repair costs than comparable alternatives. ADAC’s 2026 workshop-estimate comparison is narrower: it examined scheduled inspection estimates, not a complete record of repairs or ownership costs.
ADAC received 94 estimates from 120 requests for BMW, Dacia, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen vehicles in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and surrounding areas. In that sample, inspection estimates for combustion cars were generally at least one third higher than estimates for comparable electric cars, with a Dacia exception. This does not mean German cars cost one third more: the comparison is combustion versus electric, includes five named brands and a limited set of locations, and concerns estimates rather than guaranteed bills. Actual charges can vary by workshop, model, service schedule and location. See ADAC’s inspection-cost comparison for the scope of that sample.
How to compare cars without mixing the measures
If you are assessing a specific car, compare like with like. A brand-level label or a single headline statistic is a poor substitute for information about the exact vehicle and the kind of cost or failure you care about.

- Match the vehicle: compare the same model year or generation, engine and powertrain rather than relying on a whole-brand average.
- Match age and use: account for the car’s age, annual mileage, maintenance history and warranty status. TÜV age-band results and ADAC registration-year results are not interchangeable.
- Match the evidence to the question: use roadside breakdown data for breakdown risk, inspection data for the report’s selected defects, and comparable service or repair-cost data for affordability.
- Match the market: German breakdown and inspection results describe German data. They should not be projected directly onto every country, where vehicle populations, inspection systems and service conditions may differ.
- Check the latest release: annual rankings are snapshots. Confirm that the data covers the model year and powertrain you are considering.
