How Legacy Automakers Use Formula E to Improve Production EVs

Formula E offers automakers a competitive setting to develop EV software, energy management and engineering expertise. Nissan, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz describe specific paths from the track to road vehicles, with important limits on what the reported results prove.

Automakers use Formula E as a competitive development environment for electric powertrain software, energy management, regenerative braking, thermal control and engineering expertise. The transfer works both ways: road-car data and people can inform race development, while race-program lessons can feed into production vehicles. Nissan, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz provide specific examples—but manufacturer and championship accounts do not establish how much Formula E independently improves EV range, efficiency, reliability or cost across the industry.

How Formula E learning reaches road cars

Formula E teams must manage energy and vehicle behavior under race conditions, making software, battery management and powertrain control natural areas for development. The value to a road-car program is not that a production EV can simply use a race car’s settings or hardware. Rather, engineers can apply relevant methods, control strategies and experience to different vehicles with different safety, durability, cost and customer requirements.

Energy management and software

Nissan describes a two-way exchange. The company says information from an estimated 28 billion kilometers of LEAF customer driving informed Formula E race-software design. That is an estimate of customer driving, not distance covered in a Formula E test, and Nissan does not give the page a publication year for the figure. Nissan also says battery-management software learning from racing contributes to intelligent power solutions for road EVs. Nissan’s Formula E technology page

People and working practices move between programs, too. In an account published April 2, 2025, Nissan describes its automotive Chief Powertrain Engineer bringing production-side experience into GEN3 Evo powertrain development. The work involved weighing interactions among vehicle components using simulation and physical results—an approach relevant to both race and production engineering, even when the performance targets differ. Regenerative braking

When an EV slows, its motor can convert some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity and return it to the battery. Jaguar identifies regenerative braking as a principle shared by its Formula E car and the I-PACE, its first electric vehicle. Jaguar says energy recovery during one Formula E race can extend the race car’s range by up to 15%; that figure applies to the race car, not the I-PACE. Jaguar’s Race to Road page

Thermal control and coordinated powertrain systems

Battery performance and efficiency depend on more than a single component. Formula E’s 2023 Season 8 sustainability report says Jaguar developed an I-PACE software upgrade informed by technical knowledge from Formula E. It describes the upgrade as optimizing battery management, thermal systems and all-wheel-drive torque, with up to 20 km of additional range on a full charge. This is a figure reported by Formula E about Jaguar’s upgrade; the report does not isolate Formula E’s contribution from other development inputs or provide an independent causal estimate. What the automaker examples show

Automaker and vehicle Technology area and direction Reported production-vehicle result What the evidence establishes
Nissan LEAF and Formula E powertrain Both directions: Nissan says LEAF customer-use knowledge informed racing software, while race battery-management learning helps shape road EV power solutions. Production engineering expertise also entered Formula E development. No specific production range or efficiency gain is quantified in the cited Nissan accounts. Nissan’s own account. The estimated 28 billion kilometers refers to LEAF customer driving, not race testing or a measured range improvement. Nissan
Jaguar I-PACE Race-to-road: Jaguar describes regenerative-braking learning, and Formula E reports software optimization across battery management, thermal systems and all-wheel-drive torque. Formula E’s 2023 report says the software upgrade delivered up to 20 km of additional full-charge range. Jaguar and Formula E provide specific examples; neither account independently measures Formula E’s causal contribution. Jaguar and Formula E
Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX Formula E’s Season 8 report says the championship’s power-unit team also helped develop the efficiency demonstrator. The report says the VISION EQXX drove more than 1,200 km on one charge in a real-world drive. Formula E’s 2023 report documents its account of team involvement and the drive; it does not show that Formula E alone caused the result. Formula E’s sustainability reports

How to interpret Formula E’s newer race-car specifications

The FIA’s announced GEN4 generation is planned to debut in the 2026/27 season. Its published figures describe a race car: 450 kW peak power, 600 kW in Attack Mode, regenerative braking up to 700 kW and race energy capacity up to 55 kWh. The FIA lists Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, Jaguar and Lola Cars among registered developers, and presents road relevance as a development rationale. These specifications are not production-EV specifications and do not prove that a named road model will adopt the same hardware or power levels. The FIA’s GEN4 announcement

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The examples show credible pathways for knowledge transfer: customer-use data can inform race software; engineers can move between production and racing programs; and race-developed understanding can contribute to road-car control systems. The I-PACE and VISION EQXX accounts add specific, attributed examples. However, the cited material does not provide an independently measured, cross-manufacturer estimate of Formula E’s effect on production EV range, efficiency, reliability or cost. Individual reported figures should therefore be read in their stated vehicle and program context, not treated as proof of a general improvement across mass-market EVs.
