He did not start the NASCAR race: rain delayed the Indy 500, and later rain and lightning stopped the 600 before Larson could get behind the wheel. He reached the Charlotte pit box ready to race if the event resumed.
What Larson planned: the Hendrick 1,100
Larson’s attempt to run both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day was called the “Hendrick 1,100,” a reference to the two races’ combined 1,100 competitive miles. IndyCar described the effort as the “Double.” Larson’s Indianapolis entry was the No. 17 Arrow McLaren Dallara-Chevrolet; his NASCAR entry was the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. IndyCar’s 2024 report and NASCAR’s account of the plan identify the entries and the shared-day challenge.
He qualified fifth for the Indy 500 and tenth for the Coca-Cola 600. The intended next step after Indianapolis was to board a plane and fly to Charlotte, where he would take over the Cup car. The published official reporting does not name the aircraft or operator, provide an airport itinerary, or give an exact flight time, so those details cannot be established from the available accounts.
How the race-day plan changed
Rain delayed the Indianapolis start
Persistent rain and lightning pushed the scheduled 2024 Indy 500 start to 4:45 p.m. ET, roughly four hours later than planned. The delay created a choice: leave Indianapolis early to preserve a chance of making Charlotte’s start, or stay for the race Larson had spent more than a year preparing to run. Hendrick Motorsports confirmed he would stay. Larson started fifth in his IndyCar debut and finished 18th. NASCAR reported the decision and finish.

Allgaier started in Charlotte
Justin Allgaier was on standby as the No. 5’s reserve driver. Once it was clear Larson would not arrive in time for the start, Allgaier started the Coca-Cola 600, allowing Hendrick Motorsports to field the car while Larson was still in Indianapolis. NASCAR’s race-day coverage describes the arrangement.

Why Larson reached the pit box but never raced
A second weather interruption affected the Charlotte race. Rain and lightning halted the Coca-Cola 600 after 249 of its scheduled 400 laps. Larson arrived at the No. 5 team’s pit box during the stoppage and prepared to take over if NASCAR resumed the event, but the race was called. Allgaier was credited with 13th place. Larson therefore made it to the track after the race had started, but he did not start or compete in the 600. NASCAR’s race report records the stoppage and result.
The distinction matters: the plan depended not only on Larson’s travel from Indianapolis, but also on having a race still running when he arrived. The reserve-driver handoff covered the start; the Charlotte weather stoppage left a possible late takeover, but the event never resumed.

Why NASCAR granted Larson a playoff waiver
On June 4, 2024, NASCAR granted Larson a playoff eligibility waiver after Hendrick Motorsports requested an exception. NASCAR cited the unusual circumstances and Larson’s attempts to reach Charlotte, including his presence in the pit box with his helmet on, ready to race. Senior vice president of competition Elton Sawyer said, “We ultimately landed at giving Kyle a waiver. Essentially our decision-making was, although we had the inclement weather in Indianapolis as well as Charlotte, Kyle made every attempt to get to Charlotte. He was standing in the pit box with his helmet on ready to go.” NASCAR’s waiver report explains the decision.
