Its 2016 Kickstarter promoted speeds up to 20 mph and more than 20 miles of range, but those were maker claims—not independently verified results. The practical catch was compatibility: GeoOrbital’s FAQ said its then-current wheel supported rim brakes, not disc brakes. Current sales and replacement-part support are also uncertain.
What is the GeoOrbital Wheel?
GeoOrbital marketed its product as an all-in-one front propulsion system for an existing bicycle. Rather than replacing the whole bike or mounting a conventional motor at the rear hub, the GeoOrbital assembly took the place of the front wheel and integrated electric-drive components into the wheel structure. Its unusual open design, with a stationary center, gave it the futuristic look behind the “sci-fi” comparison.
The intended appeal was a reversible conversion: fit the powered wheel for electric assistance or throttle-driven travel, then reinstall the bicycle’s original front wheel when desired. This describes the company’s product positioning, not a hands-on finding about installation or riding.
The 2016 Kickstarter campaign raised $1,261,222 from 1,623 backers against a $75,000 goal. Those are campaign figures recorded by Kickstarter; they do not establish reliability, customer satisfaction or present-day support.

The published figures varied by source and should not be treated as a single guaranteed specification. None of the figures below is an independent test result.

Range depends on conditions and riding choices, and these historical materials do not provide a common test basis for comparing the figures. GeoOrbital CEO Michael Burtov described the intended audience to TechCrunch as: “We look at it as more of an urban product, or suburban product.”

Does it fit your bike?
Not necessarily. GeoOrbital’s 2016 creator FAQ identified 26-inch and 700C versions and said the then-current wheel was intended for adult bicycles with supported wheel sizes. It also said the product did not support disc brakes. That limitation matters more than broad promotional language about wide compatibility.
Before considering a used wheel, identify the bike’s actual wheel diameter, front fork and attachment interface, and brake type. In particular, check whether the bicycle uses a rim brake or a disc brake; the FAQ’s answer was that disc brakes were unsupported. A nominally matching wheel size alone does not confirm that a particular bicycle will accept the assembly.

How difficult was installation?
The product was marketed as a quick wheel swap, but the available materials do not establish a verified installation time or provide an independent assessment of difficulty. In concept, conversion meant removing the existing front wheel and fitting the GeoOrbital unit; returning to the ordinary setup meant reinstalling that original wheel. Whether that is straightforward on a specific bicycle depends on its fork, attachment interface and brake configuration.
What happens if the battery runs out?
GeoOrbital’s FAQ said a rider could continue pedaling if the battery died, or remove the powered unit and reinstall the regular front wheel. Treat that as the creator’s historical product information: there is no independent verification here of how easy or comfortable pedaling would be with a depleted unit fitted.

The same FAQ described a replaceable battery and optional extra battery packs. Company offering materials identified a removable Panasonic 36V battery. Those statements do not establish that compatible replacement packs, service or support are available now.

Availability is unclear, so do not assume that the wheel is currently sold new. A RAKUNEW listing marks its item “販売終了” (sales ended/discontinued); that establishes the status of that listing, not worldwide unavailability. Meanwhile, indexed pages at geoorbitalco.com include sales pitches, while its about page says the company no longer sells the wheel. Those pages conflict and do not establish an authoritative active sales channel.

- Confirm that the exact wheel size and front attachment fit the bicycle.
- Confirm brake compatibility; the historical FAQ explicitly excluded disc brakes.
- For a used unit, verify battery condition, exact replacement-battery fit and whether a compatible pack can actually be obtained.
- Check the seller, return terms, warranty and service support rather than inferring them from historical product pages.
The creator’s FAQ also described a solid foam tire and an estimated tire life, but those are historical claims; current parts inventory and long-term durability are not established.
Verdict
The GeoOrbital Wheel offered a distinctive idea: turn a conventional bicycle into an electric-assisted ride by swapping its front wheel, with the drive system and removable battery integrated into the replacement. Its historical headline figures are attention-grabbing but vary across company materials and lack independent test confirmation. The rim-brake-only limitation reported in the FAQ rules it out for disc-brake bikes, while uncertain sales and parts support make present-day ownership a separate concern from the concept itself.
