Mercedes-Benz listed cargo volume up to 533 cu ft and maximum payload up to 6,790 lb for certain diesel versions; gasoline models had lower published maxima. Car and Driver praised the Sprinter’s capability while noting its price premium over some rivals and the extra cost of many driver-assistance features. Whether it is the right van depends on matching its configuration, ratings and equipment to the job.
Is the 2022 Sprinter Cargo Van a good work van?
For buyers who need a configurable cargo van and can make use of its available capacity, the 2022 Sprinter merits consideration. Car and Driver describes it as capable and highly configurable, but more expensive than similarly versatile rivals such as the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster. Its review says the standard turbo-four is sufficient for lighter-duty work; the range also included diesel options.
That broad capability is not a promise that every Sprinter can carry or tow the published maximum. Engine, drivetrain, body, wheelbase, roof and equipment affect the individual vehicle’s ratings. Compare the van’s certification label and build documentation with the actual load and trailer you expect to use.
Which engines and drivetrains were available?
Mercedes-Benz’s July 26, 2022 U.S. model-year guide lists three cargo-van engine choices. The powertrain, transmission and drive layout vary by engine:

These are guide-level specifications, not a single specification that applies to every van. Choose by the required drive layout and the payload, towing and operating needs of the intended build, then confirm the exact vehicle’s equipment.
How much can it carry, hold and tow?
Mercedes-Benz’s MY22 guide gives these U.S. Cargo Van figures. Payload, GVWR and cargo volume are range-level values; they vary with configuration. The guide lists diesel towing as 5,000 or 7,500 lb, depending on configuration, and gasoline towing at 5,000 lb.

These are manufacturer-published maxima or ranges, not guarantees for every wheelbase, roof, drivetrain or option combination. Payload is the amount available for people, cargo and added equipment within the vehicle’s applicable ratings; shelving and other upfits use some of that capacity. Before buying or loading, check the specific van’s certification label and vehicle documentation. For towing, use the rating for that exact build rather than assuming the range maximum applies.
What safety and convenience equipment does it include?
Mercedes-Benz’s model-year guide lists Active Brake Assist as standard, along with items such as a load-adaptive electronic stability program, cruise control, USB-C dashboard sockets, keyless start and airbags. It also describes systems including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist with rear cross-traffic alert, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Park Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist and Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function.

The technical highlights list is not evidence that every named system came standard on every van. Car and Driver says most of the driver-assistance systems offered were optional, identifying automated emergency braking as standard and blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist as available. Equipment can vary by build and package, so verify a specific vehicle’s equipment list or VIN rather than inferring features from the model name.
How configurable is the cargo area?
The MY22 guide describes options including powered sliding doors and steps, washable load-compartment wall paneling and lightweight plastic flooring. Mercedes-Benz eXpertUpfitter solutions also include shelving, workbenches and heavy-duty wood floors. These can help turn an empty cargo area into a work space, but they add cost and weight and must suit the van’s interior.

For shelving or a workbench, match the product’s fitment to the exact wheelbase, roof and interior layout, and consider what it will carry and how it will be secured. A product category is not a fitment guarantee: confirm compatibility for the individual Sprinter before ordering or installing equipment.

What are the warranty and fuel-economy considerations?
Car and Driver lists a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and says scheduled maintenance is not complimentary. For a used Sprinter, the remaining coverage depends on factors such as in-service date, mileage, ownership and applicable market; confirm the terms for the vehicle in question.
Car and Driver notes that the EPA does not estimate fuel economy for commercial vehicles with a GVWR above 8,500 lb. Because the guide gives GVWR ranges that cross that threshold, do not assume an EPA mpg figure applies across the 2022 Sprinter Cargo Van range. No range-wide EPA fuel-economy rating is established here.
How does the 2022 model differ from the 2023 update?
Mercedes-Benz’s March 8, 2022 announcement concerned changes for the U.S. 2023 model year, expected early the following year. It said the updated lineup would transition to four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines and make a nine-speed transmission standard across variants, alongside a new AWD system. Those announced changes should not be read as 2022 specifications: the 2022 guide lists a six-cylinder diesel and a 7G-Tronic automatic for the diesel options.
