The review’s towing and fuel-economy figures are useful context, but they are test-era results—not ratings for every F-150 PowerBoost.
What this review covers
Aaron Turpen’s New Atlas review, published January 26, 2022, covers a fourteenth-generation F-150 equipped with the 3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid. Its verdict was that the truck worked especially well for people who use their pickups for work. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a measured comparison against every competing truck.
The distinction matters because the review describes a specific model-era truck, while Ford’s 2025 F-150 page gives separate figures for a later model year. Neither set of maximums should be treated as the capability of an individual truck without checking its exact configuration.
Pro Power Onboard is the work-focused feature
The review describes Pro Power Onboard as an engine-supported generator with bed outlets, capable of supplying up to 7.2 kW in the reviewed PowerBoost. Turpen reports running a circular saw, a random orbital sander and other tools during a project. That hands-on use is the clearest evidence in the review for the “workhorse” claim: the truck can serve as a source of power where the work is happening, rather than merely carrying equipment there.

The 7.2 kW figure belongs to the truck described in the 2022 review; it is not the standard output listed for Ford’s 2025 F-150 page. For that model year, Ford lists standard 2.4 kW Pro Power Onboard. Buyers should confirm the equipment and output on the specific truck they are considering.
Power, towing and fuel economy in the test
Hybrid output
New Atlas reports system output of 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque for the reviewed PowerBoost. The review presents the combination as strong performance for truck duties, but output alone does not establish how much a particular truck can tow or carry; those limits depend on configuration.

Towing ratings vary by configuration
The review gives a model-era PowerBoost maximum-towing range of 5,100 to 11,300 lb across configurations and says most versions were rated for at least 9,000 lb. This is a range reported in the 2022 review, not a universal rating. Check the exact truck’s configuration and its published limits before matching it to a trailer.
One highway-loop result
On the reviewer’s highway loop, the truck returned 24.7 mpg—about 0.7 mpg above the EPA highway figure cited in the review. This is one test result under the reviewer’s conditions, not a prediction of what owners will achieve across routes, loads, weather or driving styles.

What to verify when comparing a PowerBoost
Ford’s 2025 model-year page lists up to 11,200 lb of towing, 570 lb-ft of torque and a maximum payload of 1,750 lb for the PowerBoost lineup; Ford notes that capability depends on configuration. It also lists standard 2.4 kW Pro Power Onboard. These are 2025 figures and should not be substituted for the 2021-generation review’s figures.

Those maxima do not tell you what a particular truck can safely tow or haul. Compare the exact vehicle’s configuration, towing rating, payload and expected trailer tongue weight or cargo load. Ford’s page itself qualifies capability by configuration; inspect the truck’s door-label payload and equipment rather than relying on a lineup maximum.

Trade-offs noted in the review
The test vehicle was a King Ranch, a luxury trim that may not fit every work-truck buyer’s priorities. Turpen also found that the fold-down shifter and work-surface arrangement gave up some small-item storage. In the rear cabin, raised seats left a floor that was not flat and had no tie-down points—limitations to consider if the back seat is part of your cargo plan.
