The GEM eX is a two-seat electric utility vehicle built for fleet work on campuses, facilities, communities and worksites. It combines a dump bed and low-speed-vehicle street capability with light off-road utility, but it is rear-wheel drive—not 4WD or AWD. Its range, legal routes and load limits depend on the exact build and local rules.
What the GEM eX is—and what “all-terrain” means
Waev, GEM’s parent company, introduced the eX for commercial, government and industrial operators who need a work vehicle that can move between pavement, gravel and worksite terrain. It has a two-seat cab, composite dump bed and a stated top speed of 25 mph. GEM describes it as an LSV, or low-speed vehicle, rather than a highway vehicle. GEM’s current eX specifications list rear-wheel drive with a limited-slip rear differential, 9.5 inches of ground clearance and 6.5 inches of rear suspension travel; Waev’s September 30, 2025 launch announcement gives a 50-degree approach angle.
Those specifications describe a vehicle intended to handle varied work surfaces, not a four-wheel-drive UTV. Rear-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential are not equivalent to power delivered to all four wheels. Buyers who routinely face deep mud, loose steep slopes or other conditions that require 4WD should assess the route and compare vehicles designed for that job; the eX’s “all-terrain” label alone does not establish capability in those conditions. No independent eX performance test is established here, so capability figures should be treated as manufacturer specifications.
Can you drive the GEM eX on public roads?
GEM says the eX is an LSV with a maximum speed of 25 mph and may be used on most roads posted at 35 mph or less where local law permits LSVs. That is not blanket permission to drive on every road with a 35-mph limit: street access, registration and other requirements vary by state and municipality. Check the rules for each jurisdiction and route before buying or operating one. The eX is not intended for highway-speed travel. GEM explains its general LSV guidance in its FAQ.

Range, battery choices and charging
GEM offers 8 kWh and 16 kWh lithium-ion battery configurations. Its battery information gives the following estimated ranges; GEM says actual range depends on factors including payload and terrain. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results.

These figures are from GEM’s battery and charger information. Although an options blurb on the eX product page mentions “up to 125 mi” for the 16 kWh pack, that conflicts with the product page’s own specification table and GEM’s battery page. The published 76–85-mile estimate is the more consistent figure; confirm expected range for the exact configuration and duty cycle with a dealer.

GEM lists charging through its onboard system with a GEM charge cable at 120 V or 240 V, J1772 EVSE equipment, or public charging stations. Charging time depends on the battery, charger and electrical supply:

The times above come from GEM’s MY26 sell sheet; its FAQ separately says six hours for the 8 kWh pack on a 15-amp source and four hours with the optional fast charger on a 30-amp source. Confirm the charger included in the quote and the supply available where the vehicle will charge. J1772 compatibility does not by itself establish whether a cable or other equipment is included with a particular build.

Bed, payload and towing: confirm the exact rating
The eX’s 40-by-49-inch bed has L-track side rails, a 2-inch receiver hitch and either gas-assist or electric-assist lift options. GEM says the L-track accepts off-the-shelf accessories; verify that any fitting and tie-down arrangement is compatible and rated for the load. The current product page lists a towing capacity of 1,250 lb, but confirm the applicable rating and conditions for the specific model-year vehicle before towing.
GEM’s published payload figures conflict. Its current product page lists 1,640 lb total payload and 1,340 lb rear-bed capacity, while the MY26 sell sheet lists 1,450 lb payload and 1,250 lb rear-bed capacity. The metric conversions on the product page also do not match its pound figures. These values are not resolved as definitive ratings for a given configuration. Ask GEM or the dealer for the applicable model-year rating, then follow the vehicle label and owner’s manual for safe loading.

Cab, tires and work features
Configuration choices include removable doors; optional heating, defrost and air conditioning; and an electric bed lift, along with lighting and steering options. GEM lists three tire choices:
- Street tires: 155/80 R13
- All-terrain tires: 165/80 R13
- Winter tires: 175/70 R13
These choices can tailor the vehicle to its surface and climate, but a tire option does not change the stated rear-wheel-drive layout. Waev’s launch announcement also lists three-point seat belts, roof-crush protection, windshields, mirrors, a pedestrian noise emitter, reverse alarm and backup camera. It describes hill hold for inclines and one-pedal driving as descent control. GEM lists four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. These are manufacturer-described features, not independently assessed safety or performance results.

Warranty and claims about operating costs
GEM currently advertises a limited vehicle warranty of four years or 20,000 miles and a limited battery warranty of seven years or 30,000 miles. GEM says battery coverage is full for the first four years and prorated for years five through seven. Review the written warranty for the quoted build and its terms.
Waev’s 2025 announcement claims lithium-ion batteries can last 3.5 times as long as AGM batteries, save up to $15,000 in replacement costs over seven years, and that rear-wheel drive is 20% more efficient than AWD alternatives. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not independently verified results. They should not be treated as a guaranteed saving or a universal efficiency advantage without the underlying comparison conditions and a fleet-specific cost analysis.
Who should consider the GEM eX?
The eX is most relevant to operators who need a compact electric work vehicle for short trips across a campus, facility or community, and whose routes fit its speed, drivetrain and charging constraints. Before choosing one, match the vehicle to the work rather than relying on the category label:
- Map the actual route and verify LSV access on every public-road segment.
- Compare the manufacturer’s battery range estimates with the route, payload, terrain and charging opportunities.
- Confirm the vehicle’s model-year payload, bed and towing ratings in writing and against its label or manual.
- Choose tires, cab equipment and charger options for the operating climate and shift schedule.
- For work requiring 4WD, assess a different drivetrain rather than assuming “all-terrain” means four-wheel drive.
GEM offers dealer and quote paths through its eX product page. A quote should specify model year, battery, charger, tires, cab equipment and the confirmed load ratings.
