In 2012, period coverage described a seven-week Udacity course called Programming a Robotic Car, associated with Sebastian Thrun, then widely identified with Stanford’s work in artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. The course used a robotic-car problem to teach programming concepts; the seven-week hook was a historical course pitch, not a verified promise that students could build or safely deploy a road-going self-driving car. Current enrollment and course availability have not been verified.
What did the seven-week course claim to teach?
A January 2012 account reproduced on a blog described Thrun’s Udacity initiative and a course titled Programming a Robotic Car as a seven-week offering. A February 2012 Hackaday post also characterized it as a seven-week Udacity course taught by Thrun. These contemporary reports support the historical framing, but neither is an official archived syllabus. The January 2012 reproduced account and Hackaday’s February 2012 coverage describe a programming and robotics course built around a robotic-car theme.
That framing is different from a promise to produce a deployable autonomous vehicle. A course can use a car-like problem to make software concepts concrete without covering the full engineering, validation, hardware integration, and safety work required for a real road vehicle.

- AUTHENTIC INTERIOR DESIGN - Detailed cockpit with sport bucket seats and driver-focused layout, inspired by the real Revuelto’s aerospace-style interior.
- Localization and state estimation, including Kalman and particle filters.
- PID control.
- Search methods such as A*.
- Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).
- Programming projects and Udacity lecture videos.
These are observations from students in different course terms, not a verified syllabus for the 2012 Udacity class. The Georgia Tech course reviews offer a useful indication of the kinds of algorithms taught in a related educational setting, but they do not establish that the earlier course had the same content.
What the seven-week hook does—and does not—tell you
The duration belongs to reporting about a particular course in 2012. It does not establish the workload, exact weekly sequence, prerequisites, or learning outcomes for any current course. The consulted accounts also do not verify present-day enrollment, price, certification, or a successor offering.

- Revell Model Kit #14531, Skill Level 5, Contains 77-Parts, Recommended for ages 13 and up
- Detailed 440+6 V-8 engine, hood scoop that can be positioned open or closed
- Detailed interior with separate side panels and a front bench seat
- Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and black vinyl tires
- Illustrated assembly instructions. Requires paint and glue. (not included)
In particular, “program a self-driving car” should be read as a learning theme, not a road-safety credential. Algorithms such as localization, filtering, planning, and control are important parts of robotics, but studying them in a course is not equivalent to integrating sensors and actuators, validating performance across conditions, or meeting requirements for operating an autonomous vehicle on public roads.
