If an automatic gear selector will not move out of Park, the brake-shift interlock may not be registering the brake pedal—but the symptom alone does not identify a failed part. Keep the vehicle secured, check whether the brake lamps work, and use only the shift-lock release procedure in the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle. If the problem persists or the brake lamps do not work, arrange a diagnosis before driving.
Why an automatic shifter can stay in Park
A brake-shift interlock is designed to prevent the selector from leaving Park until the brake pedal is pressed. NHTSA explains that the safety purpose is to help prevent an unattended child from shifting a vehicle. Its cited federal requirement applies to covered vehicles manufactured for sale after September 1, 2010; that date is not a statement about when every vehicle has an interlock or how often one fails. NHTSA’s interpretation of the brake-transmission shift interlock describes the requirement and rationale.
If the selector stays in Park despite pressing the brake, the interlock may not be receiving the signal it needs. The issue could involve the brake-switch circuit, a fuse, wiring, the interlock actuator, the shifter, or another vehicle-specific component. A Ford owner’s manual identifies a blown fuse and brake lamps that are not operating properly as possible causes for its described configuration; these are diagnostic leads, not a universal list. The vehicle’s own manual and service information remain the right guide for its system.
Brake lamps do not illuminate
If the brake lamps fail to come on when the pedal is pressed, a problem in the brake-light circuit or its switch is one possibility. Do not drive until brake-lamp operation has been verified. The Ford manual states: “Do not drive your vehicle until you verify that the brake lamps are working.” Ford Motor Company’s April 2015 owner manual gives this warning for its applicable vehicle configuration.

Fuse, wiring, interlock, or shifter fault
A fuse, wiring connection, shift-lock actuator, or shifter mechanism can also be involved. A historical NHTSA-hosted repair report documents case-specific repairs involving brake switches, wiring, fuse blocks, and shift-lock actuators. Those examples do not establish which part has failed on another vehicle or how common any fault is. A technician can test the relevant circuit and interlock before parts are replaced.
Safe checks to make before trying a release
- Secure the vehicle. Apply the parking brake and keep people clear of its path. An emergency release can remove the Park restraint, allowing the vehicle to roll.
- Check the brake lamps. With the vehicle secured, have someone observe the lamps while you press the brake pedal, or use a safe reflection. If they do not illuminate, do not drive the vehicle.
- Find the exact owner’s manual procedure. Use the manual for the vehicle’s year, make, model, and configuration to locate the correct fuse information and any shift-lock release instructions. Procedures vary: Ford describes a procedure for one configuration, while Kia’s 2025 owner-manual help page shows an access hole for the applicable vehicle family. Neither procedure should be assumed to apply to another car. Ford’s vehicle-specific shift-lock instructions and Kia’s owner-manual resources illustrate why the exact manual matters.
- Use an override only as the manual directs. Follow its safety steps precisely, keep the vehicle immobilized, and do not treat a successful release as a repair. Ford advises dealer attention after the release procedure in the manual cited above.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
Arrange professional diagnosis if the selector remains stuck, the brake lamps fail, or you repeatedly need the shift-lock override. A technician can check the brake-switch circuit, fuse, wiring, interlock actuator, and shifter as appropriate for the vehicle. Historical repair cases include brake-switch replacement or adjustment, but that does not make a brake switch the default fix. Confirm the fault before buying a replacement part.
