Gasoline vs. Diesel: Which Costs Less to Drive?

Diesel often gets better MPG, but gasoline may still cost less when diesel’s pump-price and purchase premiums are included. Use fuel-cost-per-mile math and a full ownership comparison to choose.

Neither fuel is always cheaper. Diesel vehicles often travel farther on a gallon because diesel contains about 15% more energy than gasoline, but diesel fuel has also generally cost more at U.S. pumps. The lower-cost choice is the vehicle with the lower total cost for your local prices, real fuel economy, purchase price, maintenance, taxes, and planned ownership period.

For a first estimate, divide each fuel’s price per gallon by the vehicle’s comparable combined MPG. Then add the costs that fuel economy leaves out. The method below shows exactly how to do that for a U.S. vehicle purchase in 2026.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The direct answer: calculate cost per mile, then total ownership cost

Fuel cost per mile is:

fuel price per gallon ÷ comparable combined MPG

For gasoline, that is Pg ÷ G. For diesel, it is Pd ÷ D. Diesel is cheaper for fuel only when:

D ÷ G > Pd ÷ Pg

In words, the diesel vehicle’s MPG advantage must be greater than diesel’s price premium. A diesel that gets 20% better MPG does not save money when diesel costs 25% more per gallon. This arithmetic compares fuel only; purchase price, financing, maintenance, repairs, insurance, taxes, and resale can reverse the result.

Why diesel MPG does not settle the question

More energy in each gallon

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says diesel fuel “contains more energy per gallon of fuel than gasoline (generally resulting in higher fuel economy).” EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report places the difference at about 15%. Diesel combustion and engine design also influence the result, so the 15% figure is not a promise that every diesel vehicle will achieve 15% better MPG. Vehicle weight, gearing, aerodynamics, tires, driving style, and emissions equipment all matter.

Use the EPA combined MPG ratings for the two specific vehicles whenever possible. Do not compare a diesel heavy-duty pickup with a small gasoline hatchback and call the difference a fuel-type advantage; the vehicles perform different jobs and consume fuel for different reasons.

Diesel has often cost more at the pump

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that on-highway diesel prices have been higher than regular-grade gasoline prices, on a dollar-per-gallon basis, almost continuously since September 2004. EIA attributes the historical spread to factors including distillate demand, the cost of producing and distributing low-sulfur diesel, and higher federal diesel taxes. “Almost continuously” is a historical description, not a guarantee for every week, state, or station. Check current local prices before calculating.

Make a like-for-like vehicle comparison

A fair comparison starts with two vehicles that meet the same transportation need. Record the following for each candidate:

Input What to compare Why it changes the answer
Vehicle class Similar body style, size, payload, towing rating, and seating A larger or heavier vehicle can erase a fuel-efficiency advantage.
Fuel economy EPA combined MPG, plus city/highway ratings where your use differs from the test mix Combined MPG is a standardized starting point; your route may not match it.
Purchase price Actual trim and equipment, including any diesel premium Fuel savings must recover the extra capital cost.
Driving pattern Annual miles, city/highway split, towing, payload, idling, and trip length Real consumption and suitability depend on duty cycle.
Ownership period How many years you expect to keep the vehicle A short ownership period gives less time to recover a higher purchase price.
Local costs Fuel prices, registration taxes, insurance, service, and repairs Geography and model-specific costs can outweigh fuel differences.

EPA vehicle data and specifications change, and the DOE calculator notes that not all of its data have been verified by the Department of Energy or the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Confirm the current window sticker, dealer price, service schedule, and local taxes for the exact vehicle.

Pd/D < Pg/G

Rearranging gives:

D/G > Pd/Pg

The right side is the diesel price ratio. If gasoline is $3.30 per gallon and diesel is $3.60, the ratio is 1.091. A diesel must therefore deliver more than 1.091 times the gasoline vehicle’s MPG to have a lower fuel cost per mile.

Illustration using EPA label-price assumptions

EPA’s 2026 model-year fuel-economy supplement prescribes $3.30 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.60 for diesel when manufacturers calculate annual label fuel costs. Those are transparent illustration values, not an October 2026 retail-price forecast.

Illustrative vehicle Combined MPG Price used Fuel cost per mile Fuel cost at 15,000 miles
Gasoline 30 $3.30/gal $0.110 $1,650
Diesel 36 $3.60/gal $0.100 $1,500

In this deliberately simple example, diesel saves $0.010 per mile, or $150 per 15,000 miles. If the diesel version costs $4,000 more to buy, fuel alone would require about 26.7 years at 15,000 miles per year to recover that premium, before financing, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and resale. The numbers demonstrate the method; they are not a quote for a particular model.

When the diesel loses despite better MPG

Suppose gasoline costs $3.30, diesel costs $3.60, the gasoline vehicle gets 30 MPG, and the diesel gets 32 MPG. Diesel uses 1.067 times the MPG, but its price ratio is 1.091. Fuel cost is $0.110 per mile for gasoline versus $0.113 for diesel, so gasoline is cheaper to fuel. A modest MPG improvement cannot overcome a larger pump-price premium.

Use your own prices and mileage

Replace the illustration values with the prices you can actually buy. Multiply the resulting cost per mile by your expected annual distance. If your driving varies substantially by season, route, or load, calculate separate city, highway, and towing scenarios rather than relying on one blended number.

Fuel taxes and geography

Taxes are one reason pump prices differ, but they do not explain the entire market spread. EIA’s January 2026 figures are:

Tax component Gasoline Diesel
Federal tax and fees 18.40¢ per gallon 24.40¢ per gallon
Average state taxes 33.27¢ per gallon 35.50¢ per gallon

The state averages exclude county and local taxes and certain receipt-based taxes. EIA’s current tax explanation is available at How much tax do we pay on a gallon of gasoline and on a gallon of diesel fuel? Your station’s posted price also reflects crude-oil costs, refining, distribution, seasonal fuel requirements, and local competition. Use the tax figures as context, not as a substitute for a local pump-price check.

What EPA label prices do—and do not—tell you

For 2026 model-year labels, EPA specifies $3.30 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.60 for diesel, assumes 15,000 miles per year, and applies adjusted combined MPG to estimate annual fuel cost. These assumptions make labels comparable across vehicles. They are not a prediction of what you will pay, and they do not account for your state, retailer, premium fuel, towing, traffic, weather, or future price changes.

For a purchase decision, keep the label figures as a common baseline, then run a second calculation with current prices in your area. A vehicle that wins under the label assumptions may lose when your local diesel premium is larger, and the reverse can also happen.

Ownership costs that can outweigh fuel

Purchase price and financing

Compare transaction prices for equivalent trims, not the cheapest gasoline model with the most expensive diesel configuration. Include destination charges, required equipment, sales tax, registration, and the interest attributable to a higher purchase price. If you expect to sell before the loan is paid, compare the remaining loan balance with a realistic resale value rather than counting fuel savings as cash in hand.

Maintenance and repairs

Do not assume that every diesel costs more—or less—to maintain. Use the exact manufacturer schedule and local prices. Identify oil and filter specifications, fuel-filter intervals, emissions-system service, cooling-system requirements, and any maintenance required for towing or severe service. Ask for written estimates from a qualified shop for both vehicles. A single model-specific repair can matter more than several years of small fuel savings, but no universal diesel surcharge is established by the fuel comparison alone.

Insurance, registration, and financing

Obtain quotes using the exact VIN or trim where possible. Registration fees may depend on weight, value, county, or emissions rules. Insurance can vary with replacement cost, repair complexity, theft rates, and usage. Add these recurring costs to the same annual ownership worksheet rather than treating fuel as the whole budget.

Resale value

Resale should be vehicle-specific. A diesel may be attractive to buyers who tow or accumulate highway miles, while another model may have a smaller market or higher out-of-warranty risk. Use documented local listings or valuation data for the exact age, mileage, condition, and equipment. Do not assign a resale premium solely because the engine uses diesel.

Duty cycle: when each fuel type may fit better

High annual mileage and long highway trips

Frequent highway driving gives a high-MPG diesel more miles over which to recover a purchase-price difference. It also tends to align with the conditions in which many diesel vehicles achieve their strongest economy. Calculate the result rather than relying on a generic “diesel is for high mileage” rule; no universal break-even mileage applies because prices and vehicle premiums vary.

Short trips and repeated cold starts

Short, low-speed trips can produce fuel economy well below the combined rating for either fuel. They may also affect how a particular vehicle’s emissions equipment operates. Read the owner’s manual and service requirements for the exact model before choosing an engine for mostly brief errands.

Towing, payload, and idling

If you tow or carry heavy loads, compare rated capability and the fuel economy under that load, not the unloaded sticker number. Include the number of towing miles, trailer weight, terrain, and time spent idling. A vehicle that cannot meet the duty requirement is not a lower-cost choice regardless of its MPG.

Climate, terrain, and driving style

Cold weather, steep grades, traffic, roof loads, tire pressure, speed, and aggressive acceleration affect actual consumption. Apply a conservative adjustment to both vehicles or enter separate scenarios in a calculator. Keep the adjustment consistent so you are comparing engines rather than giving one vehicle a more favorable assumption.

  1. Choose the vehicle. Select a listed make and model, or create a custom vehicle when the exact trim is not available.
  2. Enter fuel economy. Use comparable combined MPG, and adjust the city/highway assumptions when the tool provides those fields.
  3. Enter purchase price. Use the actual transaction price or a clearly identified estimate for each vehicle. Include the diesel premium or gasoline discount you would really pay.
  4. Set fuel prices. Replace default values with current gasoline and diesel prices from stations you use. Enter prices separately; do not use one blended figure.
  5. Describe driving. Supply daily use, annual mileage, and highway share. Add towing or unusual use in your own sensitivity calculations if the interface does not model it directly.
  6. Choose the ownership period. Run the years you realistically expect to keep the vehicle. A five-year result can look very different from a 12-year result.
  7. Review total cost and emissions. Separate fuel from purchase and other ownership categories so you can see what drives the outcome.
  8. Run sensitivities. Change diesel’s price, annual miles, and the diesel vehicle’s purchase premium one at a time. Record the point at which the lower-cost choice changes.

The calculator is a decision aid, not a guarantee. DOE specifically warns that vehicle prices and specifications change frequently and that not all data have been verified by DOE or NLR. Confirm important inputs independently.

Emissions are a separate comparison

Cost and emissions do not always point to the same vehicle. EPA notes that diesel contains more carbon per gallon than gasoline. Per-mile emissions depend on how many gallons the vehicle burns, the vehicle’s certified emissions performance, and the fuel’s carbon content. A meaningful comparison therefore needs the exact vehicles and actual fuel use, not MPG alone. The DOE calculator can provide an emissions estimate alongside ownership cost; treat it as model- and input-specific.

A practical worksheet for your decision

Create one column for the gasoline vehicle and one for the diesel vehicle. Enter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transaction price, taxes, registration, and financing cost.
  • Combined, city, and highway MPG.
  • Current local gasoline and diesel prices.
  • Annual miles and the percentage driven on highways.
  • Expected towing, payload, idling, and severe-service use.
  • Scheduled maintenance and realistic repair reserves.
  • Insurance and recurring registration costs.
  • Expected resale value and the date you plan to sell.

Calculate annual fuel cost as annual miles multiplied by fuel cost per mile. Add annual nonfuel costs, subtract expected resale proceeds at the end of the holding period, and include the extra purchase and financing cost. Then test a low-price, high-price, low-mileage, and high-mileage scenario. The choice that remains affordable across plausible scenarios is safer than one that wins only under a single optimistic assumption.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing unrelated vehicles. A fuel-type conclusion is invalid when size, capability, aerodynamics, or equipment differs substantially.
  • Using MPG without price. Gallons saved have value only after multiplying by the price you actually pay.
  • Using a national or outdated price. Fuel prices vary by location and date; use a current local observation.
  • Treating EPA label assumptions as forecasts. The $3.30 gasoline and $3.60 diesel figures are for 2026 label calculations.
  • Ignoring the purchase premium. Divide the premium by annual fuel savings to see how long recovery would take, then include financing and resale.
  • Assuming maintenance is universal. Compare schedules and documented estimates for the exact engine and model year.
  • Applying unloaded MPG to towing. Heavy loads, hills, speed, and trailer aerodynamics can change consumption dramatically.
  • Expecting a universal break-even mileage. The threshold changes with every combination of prices, MPG, vehicle premium, and ownership period.

Bottom line for a U.S. buyer in 2026

Start with the two vehicles that genuinely meet your needs. Calculate price per gallon ÷ comparable combined MPG using current local prices, and use D/G > Pd/Pg to test whether diesel actually wins on fuel. Then add purchase, financing, maintenance, repairs, insurance, taxes, duty-cycle effects, and resale over the years you will own the vehicle. Diesel’s higher energy density can produce lower fuel cost per mile, but its historically higher pump price and potentially higher acquisition cost mean gasoline is often the better financial choice for moderate mileage or short ownership. The numbers for your matched vehicles—not the fuel label alone—decide.
