The latest national weekly average for regular gasoline fell, rather than rose: the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported $4.354 per gallon for the week ending October 5, 2026, down 11.1 cents from the prior week but $1.230 higher than a year earlier. For a current state comparison, AAA’s daily averages dated October 7 put California among the most expensive markets at $6.36 per gallon and Indiana among the least expensive at $3.71.
Did gas prices rise this week?
Not in the latest EIA national weekly reading. EIA’s regular-gasoline benchmark was $4.354 per gallon for the week ending October 5, 2026. It was 11.1 cents below the previous week and $1.230 above the same week in 2025. EIA’s figures include taxes and are weekly survey averages, not live prices at individual pumps. The broader year-over-year increase helps explain the “rise” in the headline, but the most recent weekly change was a decrease. EIA’s October 2026 outlook also reported a September monthly retail gasoline average of $4.35 per gallon.
Where are gas prices highest and lowest?
AAA’s daily state averages dated October 7, 2026, show California at $6.36 per gallon among the most expensive markets and Indiana at $3.71 among the least expensive. The $2.65-per-gallon difference compares those displayed state averages; it does not mean every California station costs more than every Indiana station. Check AAA’s daily gas-price data.

As a cost illustration, FuelWide calculates that a 15-gallon fill at those averages would cost $95.40 in California and $55.59 in Indiana, a $39.81 difference. That calculation assumes a 15-gallon fill and uses AAA’s October 7 state averages; actual station prices and the amount drivers buy vary. View FuelWide’s state price comparison.
Why EIA and AAA state prices differ
The numbers above come from different datasets and dates. AAA’s California and Indiana figures are daily state averages for October 7. EIA’s weekly table for the week ending October 5 lists selected state observations, including California at $6.227, Ohio at $3.829 and Texas at $3.874 per gallon. EIA’s table is not a complete 50-state ranking, so it should not be used to infer which state was cheapest overall. Review EIA’s weekly state data.

Keep the series separate when comparing locations or tracking changes over time: AAA’s daily averages and EIA’s weekly survey figures are not interchangeable snapshots.

EIA attributed September 2026’s increase in retail gasoline prices to higher crude oil prices and rising gasoline crack spreads—the difference between crude oil costs and wholesale gasoline prices. Retail prices do not move in lockstep with wholesale costs because distribution and retail margins, as well as taxes, also contribute to the difference.

In its October 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecast that retail gasoline prices would be about the same in October as in September, then slowly decrease along with crude oil prices. How to compare prices before filling up
- Compare prices near your route and destination, not just state averages; a state average cannot identify the cheapest station nearby.
- AAA says its TripTik planner can show current fuel prices and public EV charging prices along a route. Open AAA TripTik.
- Check the displayed price and location before detouring. A small per-gallon saving may not justify extra driving, especially if the station is far from your route.
