GAC Is Serious About Solid-State Batteries—but 2026 Is the Test

Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) is the Chinese automaker behind this solid-state-battery push. It says it has developed a large-format cell above 400 Wh/kg, established a pilot line capable of producing cells above 60 Ah, and plans to put the technology in a vehicle in 2026. Those are meaningful development milestones—not proof of mass production, customer deliveries, or a battery ready for ordinary buyers.

What GAC has reported—and what it has not

GAC, whose premium electric-vehicle brand is known as Hyper or Hyptec in different markets and materials, has described a self-developed solid-state battery program. According to GAC’s announcement, its stated next step is vehicle integration in 2026. In a separate release, the company reported cell energy density above 400 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), a pilot production line with capability for vehicle-grade cells above 60 amp-hours (Ah), and successful tests in a 200°C thermal chamber and a nail-penetration test. These are company-reported results, not independently verified performance data.

The distinction between achievement and target matters. GAC’s disclosures indicate progress beyond a laboratory concept: it reports pilot manufacturing capability and has set a vehicle-integration goal. They do not establish that a vehicle with the battery has been delivered to customers, that production is at commercial scale, or that the cell will meet its targets in a complete pack. Publicly available information cited here does not specify the vehicle model, pack-level energy density, test-cycle range, price, production volume, or automotive cycle-life results.

“Solid-state” is not the same as “semi-solid”

Most conventional lithium-ion EV batteries use a liquid electrolyte to move ions between the electrodes. An all-solid-state design replaces that liquid electrolyte with solid material. A semi-solid or hybrid design retains some liquid or gel component. The latter can bring solid-electrolyte elements into a battery that is closer to existing manufacturing and vehicle deployment, but it should not automatically be counted as a fully solid-state cell.

Companies and media do not always use these labels consistently, so a headline alone is not enough to identify what is in a vehicle. The chemistry also matters: oxide, sulfide, polymer, and composite approaches have different manufacturing and performance trade-offs. Technical reviews describe persistent challenges around electrode-electrolyte contact, degradation, dendrites, manufacturing complexity, and cost. There is not yet one universally established solid-state chemistry that resolves them all; see this technical overview.

Why 400 Wh/kg gets attention—and why it does not equal a range figure

If achieved in an automotive cell, 400 Wh/kg would be a high gravimetric energy-density figure. In principle, more energy for a given cell mass could support a longer-range vehicle at similar battery weight, or a lighter battery for a similar range. It could also give engineers more flexibility in packaging.

But a cell’s Wh/kg is not the same as a complete pack’s. A pack also needs casing, cooling, electronics, structural parts, and safety systems. Nor does cell energy density translate directly into a particular driving range. Range depends on the pack’s usable energy as well as vehicle efficiency, aerodynamics, tires, weather, speed, and the battery buffer that the vehicle software reserves. GAC has not published a corresponding pack-level figure or a certified range for a vehicle using this battery in the material cited here. It would therefore be premature to turn the 400 Wh/kg claim into a kilometre or mile estimate.

Solid electrolytes may reduce some risks associated with flammable liquid electrolytes, but they do not make a battery or vehicle fireproof. GAC’s reported nail-penetration and 200°C test results are useful validation claims, but they do not substitute for disclosed test protocols, independent replication, pack-level abuse testing, crash performance, or evidence about thermal propagation in a vehicle.

SolidSafe BMX 10K Semi-Solid MagSafe Magnetic Power Bank, 10000mAh (Blue) | Semi-Solid State safety; 10,000mAh MagSafe-compatible Qi2 15W for iPhone 17/16/15/14/13/12; 30W dual USB-C; full-color LCD
  • SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
  • ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
  • QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
  • DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
  • FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.

How GAC’s position differs from SAIC’s

SAIC Motor offers a useful comparison because it has put its IM L6 electric sedan on sale with a battery marketed as “solid-state.” SAIC’s technology page gives the Lightyear battery a figure above 300 Wh/kg and claims endurance above 1,000 km. That distance is a company-published claim; it should not be treated as an EPA or WLTP rating without a stated test cycle. Outside technical coverage commonly characterizes the IM L6 battery as semi-solid or hybrid rather than fully solid-state.

Separately, SAIC announced a fully solid-state battery target above 400 Wh/kg and a 2026 mass-production goal in a 2024 technology announcement. These are different milestones: a semi-solid product in a customer-facing vehicle and a target for a future fully solid-state battery. GAC’s public case, by contrast, centers on a reported high-energy-density cell, pilot-line capability, and a 2026 vehicle-integration target. The evidence does not make either company a definitive winner; they are describing different stages and, potentially, different battery architectures.

China’s wider race is a set of different timelines

GAC is not the only Chinese automaker pursuing batteries described as solid-state. NIO began supplying vehicles with semi-solid batteries to customers in 2024, an example of hybrid technology reaching the market ahead of all-solid-state deployment, according to the technical overview. Geely and Chery have been reported as targeting prototype demonstrations around 2026–27, while BYD has been reported as aiming for small-batch production around 2027. Those figures are company or industry-reported plans, not evidence that the milestones have been completed; see coverage of the companies’ timelines.

Changan’s public 2026 battery strategy has emphasized sodium-ion technology; that should not be confused with its separate solid-state development claims. Its official strategy announcement is a reminder that automakers may pursue several battery chemistries at once. Comparing a semi-solid customer delivery, a pilot line, a prototype target, and a mass-production goal as if they were the same achievement produces a misleading leaderboard.

What would prove the program is ready for buyers?

Battery commercialization is a ladder, not a single announcement: laboratory cell, pilot line, prototype vehicle, validation fleet, limited customer delivery, then high-volume production. GAC’s public disclosures place it around the pilot-line and planned vehicle-integration stages. The important next evidence is not another headline number alone, but whether the cell can be made repeatedly and then survive the demands of a vehicle.

  • Clear cell and pack specifications: the chemistry, test conditions, capacity, power, cell-level and pack-level energy density, and operating-temperature range.
  • Durability and charging evidence: cycle life under automotive conditions, fast-charging performance, low-temperature behavior, and degradation over time.
  • Manufacturing results: repeatability, yield, line output, and a credible path from pilot production to useful volumes and competitive cost.
  • Vehicle validation: a named model, a real-world validation fleet, and transparent range figures tied to a stated test cycle.
  • Safety and ownership data: disclosed, reproducible testing at cell and pack level, plus warranty terms and field reliability once customers have the vehicles.

Moving up this ladder is difficult. Solid electrolyte layers must be made thin and defect-free; interfaces between solid materials must stay in effective contact as electrodes expand and contract; and designs must control risks such as dendrite growth and short circuits. Some chemistries bring demanding processing or moisture-control requirements. The resulting cell must then work as part of a pack across years of charging, weather, vibration, and impacts—all at a cost buyers will accept. A pilot line is evidence of development, not proof that these hurdles have been cleared at mass-production scale.

So, is GAC serious?

Yes—in the specific sense that GAC has publicly described its own development work, reported a pilot production capability and measurable cell targets, and set a date for vehicle integration. That is more substantive than an unaccompanied promise of future research. But “serious” should not be mistaken for “proven”: the information available here does not establish high-volume production, independent confirmation of the performance claims, long-term durability, competitive cost, or broad customer availability. The 2026 target is a target; actual vehicle integration and deliveries are the test.
