The GAC AION V sold in Europe uses a Type 2 connector for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. GAC publishes an 11 kW maximum AC rate, up to 180 kW DC, and a 10–80% DC charging time of 24 minutes for its European specification. Those figures are market- and configuration-specific; confirm the rating on your local vehicle specification and owner manual before buying charging equipment.

Charging specifications at a glance

The AION V is not configured identically in every market. The table separates the published figures by market, trim information and test cycle so that a European WLTP number is not mistaken for a Hong Kong NEDC result.

What charging connector does the GAC AION V use?

European Type 2 AC connector

GAC Europe’s 2024 specification identifies Type 2 as the AION V’s AC connector. AC electricity from a home wallbox or an AC public post enters the car through this socket and is converted to battery power by the vehicle’s onboard charger. The European car’s published onboard limit is 11 kW, so a charger capable of more than 11 kW will not make that vehicle charge faster on AC.

European CCS2 DC connector

For DC rapid charging, the European specification uses CCS2. A CCS2 inlet combines the Type 2-shaped upper section with two larger DC contacts below it. A compatible rapid charger supplies direct current to the battery, bypassing the car’s AC-to-DC onboard charger. GAC lists up to 180 kW DC for the European specification.

Do not assume the same inlet everywhere

Connector names and power ratings are market-dependent. The cited Hong Kong page reports a 6.6 kW AC limit and either 150 kW or 180 kW DC, depending on trim, rather than the European 11 kW AC figure. Before ordering a cable or wallbox, read the charging section of the vehicle sold in your country and check the socket shown in its manual.

How fast does the AION V charge?

AC charging at home

For the European vehicle, GAC quotes a maximum of 11 kW AC. AION Auto UK’s media page describes 0–100% home AC charging in around 8.5 hours, and GAC Australia’s 2025 page gives the same 8.5-hour 0–100% AC figure for its listed configuration. These are manufacturer-stated times, not a promise that every household installation will deliver 11 kW continuously.

An ideal arithmetic check illustrates why the quoted time is longer than a simple battery-size division. Dividing the European 75.26 kWh figure by 11 kW gives about 6.8 hours before allowing for conversion losses, battery-management overhead and the reduction in power near full charge. The published 8.5-hour result is the relevant manufacturer estimate for the cited configuration; the calculation is not an alternative test result.

DC rapid charging

GAC Europe lists up to 180 kW DC and 10–80% in 24 minutes. The Australian 2025 specification repeats those figures. AION Auto UK’s page also says 30–80% can take 18 minutes and describes the 10–80% result as as little as 24 minutes. The percentage window matters: a 10–80% session is not the same task as filling from empty to full, and the final part of a battery charge normally takes longer as the car reduces power to protect the cells.

Maximum power is a ceiling, not a constant

The 11 kW AC and 180 kW DC figures are maximum acceptance rates. The car may draw less if the charger is limited, the battery is cold or hot, the state of charge is high, the site is sharing power, or the local vehicle configuration has a lower rating. A charger displaying 180 kW does not force the AION V to take 180 kW, and the vehicle cannot exceed its own onboard or DC limits.

Can I charge a GAC AION V at home?

Yes, home charging is the normal use case for the European specification, provided the vehicle, cable, electrical supply and installation are compatible. An 11 kW Type 2 wallbox is the relevant product category to investigate for that car. It is not established that a wallbox is included with every vehicle, that every house can supply 11 kW, or that one model works with every regional AION V.

Check these facts before buying equipment

  • Vehicle market and trim: confirm whether your car is the European 11 kW version or another regional configuration such as the Hong Kong 6.6 kW version.
  • Connector: verify that the wallbox and cable use Type 2 for the car you own.
  • Electrical capacity: ask a qualified local installer whether the property can support the desired continuous load and what protection or circuit work is required.
  • Wallbox rating: an 11 kW unit suits the cited European limit; a higher-rated unit will not increase the car’s AC acceptance rate.
  • Installation location: check cable reach, weather exposure, mounting surface, access and any local permission requirements with the installer.
  • Vehicle documentation: use the exact local owner manual for cable handling, charge-port operation and warnings.

Typical overnight routine

  1. Park so the Type 2 cable reaches the charge port without being stretched, crushed or placed where people can trip over it.
  2. Inspect the connector and cable for visible damage or contamination.
  3. Open the vehicle’s charge port using the control described in your local manual.
  4. Insert the Type 2 plug fully into the vehicle and the wallbox, following the order specified by the equipment manufacturer.
  5. Authenticate or start the session if the wallbox requires an app, card or button.
  6. Check that the vehicle and wallbox both indicate an active session, then close and secure the vehicle.
  7. When charging is complete, stop the session before removing the plug if the wallbox or vehicle requires that sequence. Store the cable dry and safely.

The UK media page characterises overnight charging as the intended convenience of the 8.5-hour AC estimate. Your actual finish time depends on the starting percentage, available supply and the car’s charge settings.

How to use a public DC rapid charger

The European owner manual covers AC and DC charging and provides a procedure that includes connecting the charger and starting the charging equipment. Controls differ by network, so use the manual supplied for your market rather than copying instructions from another country.

  1. Check that the station offers the connector used by your car. For the European AION V, a CCS2 cable is the relevant DC connection.
  2. Park within the marked bay and inspect the station cable and plug before handling it.
  3. Open the charge port and connect the CCS2 plug firmly to the vehicle.
  4. Start the session using the station’s stated method, such as its screen, payment terminal or access card.
  5. Confirm on the station and vehicle displays that charging has begun and note the power and state-of-charge readings.
  6. End the session through the station controls or vehicle procedure before unplugging. Do not pull on a locked connector.
  7. Return the cable to its holder, close the vehicle’s port and move the car when the session is finished so the bay is available to others.

Why the same AION V can have different charging numbers

European specification

GAC Europe’s 2024 page lists a 75.26 kWh battery, 11 kW maximum AC, 180 kW maximum DC, 10–80% DC in 24 minutes, 510 km WLTP range and 16.7 kWh/100 km combined consumption. Those figures belong to that European specification and test context.

Australian specification

GAC Australia’s 2025 page lists 11 kW AC, 8.5 hours for 0–100% AC, 180 kW DC and 24 minutes for 10–80% DC for its stated configuration. Confirm the battery and equipment on the Australian vehicle you are considering rather than inferring them from the European page.

United Kingdom information

AION Auto UK’s media material describes a 400 V electrical architecture, 10–80% in as little as 24 minutes, 30–80% in 18 minutes and approximately 8.5 hours for 0–100% AC. The page does not identify an individual speaker or publication date, so these should be read as manufacturer media claims for the UK car.

Hong Kong trims

GAC Hong Kong’s 2024 page lists 64.5 kWh and 75.26 kWh batteries. It gives a 6.6 kW maximum AC rate and DC maxima of 150 kW or 180 kW, with NEDC range figures of 505 km and 602 km for the listed versions. NEDC and WLTP are different test cycles; the Hong Kong range figures should not be compared directly with the European 510 km WLTP result.

Understanding charge percentages and range planning

A quoted charging time always needs its starting and ending percentages. The European 24-minute figure covers 10–80%, while the UK page’s 18-minute figure covers 30–80%. A session beginning at 30% has less energy to add than one beginning at 10%, so the two times are not contradictory. Neither figure describes a guaranteed 0–100% rapid-charge time.

For trip planning, use the local vehicle’s displayed state of charge, route length, weather and expected consumption rather than dividing the headline range by distance. The European page’s 510 km WLTP and 16.7 kWh/100 km are standardized figures; speed, temperature, payload, terrain and heating or cooling can change real driving range.

Choosing between home AC and public DC

Use case Best suited charging What the AION V figures tell you Important limitation
Daily parking at home Type 2 AC wallbox The European car is rated up to 11 kW; the cited UK and Australian pages quote about 8.5 hours from 0–100%. Household supply and installation may limit power; actual time depends on starting charge and settings.
Long-distance stop CCS2 DC rapid charger European, Australian and UK material cites up to 180 kW or rapid-charge times in the 10–80% window. Station output, battery temperature, state of charge and regional trim can reduce the instantaneous rate.
Destination or workplace charging AC post using the vehicle’s Type 2 connection Useful when the car will remain parked for several hours. The post’s rating and the vehicle’s onboard AC limit determine the result.

Troubleshooting charging problems

The car charges more slowly than expected

  • Check whether the source is AC or DC and compare its rating with the vehicle’s local limit.
  • Read the state of charge: power commonly tapers as the battery approaches a high percentage, so a session near full will not resemble a 10–80% estimate.
  • Check whether the station is sharing power with another vehicle or has reduced output.
  • In cold or very hot conditions, allow the battery-management system to protect the pack; the displayed rate may be lower.
  • Confirm that the car is the expected market and trim. The Hong Kong figures, for example, include a 6.6 kW AC limit that is lower than the European rating.

The session will not start

  • Unplug and inspect both ends for dirt, moisture or visible damage; do not use a damaged cable.
  • Reconnect the plug firmly and follow the station’s required order for connection, authentication and start.
  • Check that the vehicle is in the required parked state and that charging has not been scheduled for a later time.
  • If the connector remains locked, use the vehicle and charger release procedure in the local manual rather than forcing it.
  • Try another compatible connector or station and report a persistent fault to the operator and the vehicle service provider.

Home installation cannot deliver 11 kW

Do not assume a lower measured rate means the car is defective. The property may have a supply constraint, a load-management setting or an installation configured below 11 kW. A qualified local installer can assess the incoming supply, circuit protection and wallbox settings. The cited sources do not establish one universal household requirement, so the assessment must be specific to the address and local electrical rules.

Safety and equipment checks

  • Use charging equipment approved for the vehicle’s connector and the local electrical system.
  • Keep plugs, sockets and couplers dry and free of debris; never use a cable with exposed conductors, cracked housings or heat damage.
  • Do not use an extension lead or improvised adapter unless the vehicle and equipment documentation expressly allows it.
  • Keep the cable out of driveways, walkways and standing water.
  • Stop charging and seek qualified assistance if the connector, cable or socket becomes unusually hot, smells of burning or shows arcing.
  • Follow the exact emergency-release and warning procedures in the local owner manual.

What to verify before buying an AION V or a wallbox

  1. Identify the sales market and trim from the vehicle identification documents.
  2. Record the battery capacity and AC/DC limits shown in that market’s current specification.
  3. Confirm whether the inlet is Type 2 and CCS2, or a different regional arrangement.
  4. Ask an installer to evaluate the home’s supply and recommend a compliant circuit and protection arrangement.
  5. Choose a wallbox whose connector, power rating and installation requirements match the vehicle and property.
  6. Read the local owner manual and charger instructions before the first session.
  7. Recheck current specifications before purchase because GAC states that equipment and availability can change by country or region.

Bottom line

For the European GAC AION V, plan around Type 2 AC, CCS2 DC, an 11 kW AC ceiling and up to 180 kW DC, with GAC’s published 0–100% AC estimate of about 8.5 hours and 10–80% DC estimate of 24 minutes. Those figures do not automatically apply to other markets: Hong Kong listings show 6.6 kW AC and trim-dependent 150 kW or 180 kW DC. Match the charger to the exact car, have the household supply assessed by a qualified installer, and use the current local manual for operating instructions.
