If you’re shopping for a used car under $10,000, a 2014 Toyota Prius or 2014 Honda Insight are two examples with EPA combined ratings above 40 mpg and displayed starting prices below the cap. A 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is rated higher at 58 mpg combined, but the comparison page lists it at $10,450—over budget. These are individual comparison examples, not a definitive national ranking; check the specific car’s price, trim, condition and history before deciding.
Used-car examples under $10,000
The figures below are from Kelley Blue Book’s comparison page, accessed October 8, 2026. Its prices are dynamic examples, not guaranteed offers, a national survey or a fixed market average. Confirm the listing, location, trim, fees and total out-the-door cost before treating any car as within budget.

A different trim, condition or location may change the asking price; the comparison alone does not show that an Ioniq can be bought under $10,000.
How to use EPA mpg ratings when shopping
Combined mpg is a useful standardized way to screen candidates, but it is not a promise about what a particular used car will achieve. The EPA says fuel-economy estimate test data come from testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and from manufacturer-submitted tests. For a properly maintained used car, the original estimate remains the best indicator of average gas mileage. Actual results vary with driving, maintenance and vehicle condition.

Look up the exact model year and trim rather than transferring a newer model’s rating to an older car. The EPA also provides fuel-economy information for used vehicles. Start with its used-car fuel-economy guidance and explanation of fuel-economy testing.
Why 2024 new-car ratings are not a used-car shortlist
The 2024 fuel-economy guide rates the new Toyota Prius hybrid at 57 mpg combined, the Kia Niro FE hybrid at 53 mpg combined and the Honda Accord Hybrid at 48 mpg combined. Those figures describe 2024 vehicles; they do not show that a 2024 model is available for under $10,000, or establish the rating of an older used model.

Use the guide to understand what newer hybrids can achieve, not to infer used-car affordability. The ratings are published by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the 2024 fuel-economy guide.
What to verify before buying
Fuel economy is only one part of the purchase. A low displayed price does not establish that a car is in good condition or will stay within budget after fees and repairs. Compare individual listings using the same checks:
