Compare the exact trim and drivetrain, calculate energy cost using your mileage and local prices, then check charging, range, space and incentives against your daily use.
This guide shows how to make that comparison without mistaking MPG or MPGe for a guarantee of your household costs.

Start with the exact vehicle configuration
Fuel-economy ratings apply to a specific configuration, not necessarily every version sold under one model name. Before comparing numbers, record the model year, trim, engine or motor, transmission, drivetrain (front-, rear- or all-wheel drive), wheel size and any equipment package that changes weight or aerodynamics. A larger wheel, all-wheel drive system or more powerful engine can carry a different rating from the base version.
Use the EPA label on the actual vehicle and verify the same configuration in the official model-year data. The U.S. Department of Energy explains how EPA test procedures and labels create a common reference for new-vehicle shoppers at Fuel Economy Test Procedures and Labeling. Record combined, city and highway results when available; combined MPG is useful for a first sort, while the city/highway split helps if your commute is heavily urban or highway-based.

MPG and MPGe are different measures
MPG measures miles traveled per gallon of liquid fuel. MPGe is an energy-equivalence measure used for electric vehicles and other electrified vehicles; it does not tell you exactly what charging will cost on your utility bill. The EPA conversion treats 33.7 kilowatt-hours as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline, so MPGe lets you compare energy use on a common scale, not forecast your personal electricity rate.
For perspective, the Department of Energy reported that model-year 2024 electric vehicles covered an EPA combined range of 53 to 140 MPGe, while gasoline vehicles, including traditional hybrids, covered 9 to 57 MPG. Those are broad fleet ranges across unlike vehicle classes, not a ranking of equivalent cars and not a 2026 model list. See the December 16, 2024 report for the stated ranges and conversion context: DOE FOTW #1373.
Turn the rating into your own annual energy cost
A useful comparison holds your driving and energy assumptions constant. The Department of Energy’s AFDC Vehicle Cost Calculator is designed to compare ownership costs and emissions, and its methodology notes that efficiency varies with use.

- Annual miles: Use your odometer history, lease allowance or a conservative estimate. Separate a normal year from unusually high travel if that distinction matters.
- Driving mix: Enter a city/highway split that resembles your routes rather than the default if the calculator allows it.
- Local energy prices: Use the gasoline price you actually encounter and your electricity rate, including time-of-use differences where relevant. Public fast charging can cost differently from home charging.
- Vehicles: Select the precise trims or powertrains. Do not compare a small sedan with a larger SUV simply because their headline ratings are close.
- Review the output: Compare annual energy cost, total operating cost and emissions under identical inputs. Save the assumptions so you can rerun the comparison when prices or incentives change.
The calculator is an estimate, not a bill. Weather, traffic, tire pressure, payload, driving style and charging losses can move real consumption away from the label. Treat the result as a consistent way to compare candidates, then test the assumptions that are most important to you.
Choose the powertrain that fits your routine
Fuel efficiency is partly a powertrain decision. Each type trades fueling convenience, electric capability, purchase price and maintenance in a different way.

| Powertrain | How it uses energy | Best fit | Constraints to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional gasoline | Runs entirely on gasoline; no external charging. | Drivers who need familiar refueling and broad vehicle availability. | Fuel-price exposure and usually lower efficiency in stop-and-go traffic than a comparable hybrid. |
| Hybrid (HEV) | Combines a gasoline engine with a battery and electric motor; the battery is charged through regenerative braking and the engine. | High-mileage or urban drivers who want better gasoline economy without plugging in. | Still uses gasoline and retains engine-related maintenance; cargo or towing specifications vary by model. |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | Can drive on electricity for a rated distance, then uses its engine when the battery is depleted or demand is high. | Drivers who can charge regularly but still make occasional long trips. | Electric benefit depends on charging frequency and trip length; it still has an engine and related maintenance. |
| Battery-electric (EV) | Uses electricity stored in a traction battery and has no gasoline operation in normal driving. | Drivers with dependable home, work or public charging and routes that fit the vehicle’s range. | Charging time and access, route planning, weather effects and local availability. |
The AFDC’s consumer guidance emphasizes that “Your driving needs, charging options, and other considerations will help determine whether an EV is right for you.” Read the full guidance at Electric Vehicles for Consumers. Information on hybrid operation is available from AFDC’s Hybrid Electric Vehicles page.
Estimate how often a plug-in hybrid will run electrically
A plug-in hybrid’s fuel economy can look excellent when tested with a charged battery, but your result depends on how often you plug in and how far you drive between charges. Ask for both the electric range and the gasoline rating after the battery is depleted. If you cannot charge at home or work most days, model a smaller electric share rather than assuming every trip starts full.
Check EV range and charging before you commit
Build a range buffer
An advertised range is a test result under defined conditions, not a promise for every journey. Hills, high speeds, heavy cargo, trailers, cold weather, heating and frequent air-conditioning use can reduce usable range. If those conditions are common, leave a buffer rather than planning trips around the last few miles of the rating. AFDC guidance specifically advises considering driving requirements and the effects of conditions such as hills, loads and climate control when evaluating an EV.
Map your charging pattern
- Home: Confirm whether you can park near an electrical connection, whether your panel and circuit can support the needed equipment, and whether local rules or an electrician’s assessment are required.
- Work: Ask about access hours, fees, connector compatibility and whether charging is shared or time-limited.
- Public: Identify dependable stations along regular routes and near destinations. Check operating status, payment method, connector type and typical wait times.
- Long trips: Plan charging stops using the vehicle’s route planner or a reliable map, and include a backup station when the next site is sparse.
Do not treat a national charging or incentive description as proof that a station or benefit is available where you live. Verify local options and current terms at purchase time. If charging access is uncertain, a hybrid may deliver a more predictable transition to lower gasoline use than an EV you cannot conveniently charge.
Compare purchase cost, operating cost and incentives together
A lower fuel bill does not automatically offset a higher purchase price, and a lower sticker price does not guarantee lower ownership cost. Put the purchase price, financing or lease terms, insurance, maintenance, energy, taxes and likely resale period in one worksheet. The AFDC calculator can provide a consistent operating-cost comparison, but it does not replace a dealer’s out-the-door quote or your lender’s terms.

Use incentives carefully
Tax credits, rebates, utility programs and registration fees can depend on vehicle eligibility, battery sourcing, income, location, purchase date and whether you buy or lease. Eligibility can change, so check the current federal, state, local and utility rules when you are ready to transact. Do not subtract an incentive from your budget until you have confirmed that you qualify and understand whether it is applied at purchase or claimed later.
Account for charging and fuel equipment
For an EV or plug-in hybrid, include any electrical work, charging equipment, installation, parking changes or public-charging fees that your situation requires. For any vehicle, include tire replacement, routine service and insurance quotes for the exact trim. These costs can outweigh small differences in annual energy use.
Compare like with like
A simple MPG ranking can be misleading when vehicles serve different jobs. Compare close alternatives by body style, passenger capacity, cargo volume, drivetrain, towing requirement and safety or comfort equipment. If one vehicle is larger or has all-wheel drive, decide whether that capability is worth its additional energy use before declaring another model “more efficient.”
| Comparison question | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | EPA combined, city and highway MPG or MPGe for the exact configuration. | Shows standardized energy use while exposing city/highway trade-offs. |
| Usefulness | Seats, cargo measurements, child-seat fit, ground clearance and towing rating. | A highly rated vehicle that cannot perform your regular tasks is not an efficient purchase. |
| Energy cost | Annual miles, driving mix, local gasoline and electricity prices, charging mix. | Converts a laboratory rating into a comparable household estimate. |
| Availability | Local inventory, wait time, service locations and charging access. | A theoretical choice is not practical if you cannot obtain or support it. |
| Up-front and recurring cost | Out-the-door price, financing, insurance, maintenance, tires and incentives. | Shows whether operating savings justify the purchase premium. |
Verify the numbers during a viewing and test drive
- Photograph the window sticker: Confirm model year, trim, drivetrain, wheel size and the EPA figures before leaving the lot.
- Check the usable space: Bring the people, child seats, mobility equipment or cargo you routinely carry. Measure rather than relying on a class label.
- Test your normal conditions: Include stop-and-go traffic, highway speed, hills, parking and the climate-control settings you normally use.
- For hybrids and PHEVs: Ask how the vehicle behaves with a low battery, what the warranty covers and how often scheduled engine service is required.
- For EVs: Confirm connector type, charging-rate limits, included cables, battery warranty terms and the route-planning system. Test a nearby charger if practical.
- Request an itemized quote: Separate vehicle price, destination charge, taxes, registration, dealer fees, optional products and any incentive assumption.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the highest number on a list
Why it fails: The figure may belong to a different trim, class or test condition and may not reflect your energy prices.
Correction: Compare exact configurations and run every candidate through the same annual-mileage and energy-price scenario.

Treating MPGe as an electricity bill
Why it fails: MPGe uses the 33.7-kWh-per-gallon energy-equivalence convention; your bill depends on your rate, charging losses, schedule and where you charge.
Correction: Use local electricity prices and a realistic home/public charging split in the cost calculator.
Assuming an EV’s rated range is a daily minimum
Why it fails: Cold weather, hills, speed, payload and heating or air conditioning can reduce range.
Correction: Add a personal buffer and identify backup charging on longer routes.

Ignoring the engine in a plug-in hybrid
Why it fails: A PHEV still carries an engine and needs engine-related maintenance, while its electric advantage shrinks when it is rarely charged.

Counting an incentive before checking eligibility
Why it fails: Rules vary by location, income, vehicle, transaction type and date.
Correction: Verify current requirements with the relevant government or utility authority before finalizing your budget.
A practical decision rule
Choose the vehicle that meets your space, route and charging or fueling requirements at the lowest credible total cost—not the one with the largest isolated MPG or MPGe figure. Keep a written comparison for at least two close alternatives, using the same mileage and energy assumptions, and revisit it when a trim, incentive or local energy price changes.
