Fortescue announced plans for about 360 autonomous battery-electric T 264s, but its latest cited material points to a 2026 introduction plan—not confirmation that the trucks are already operating autonomously.
What is Fortescue building with Liebherr?
The project is a jointly developed Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS) for the Liebherr T 264. It is not simply a driverless truck: the system combines fleet-management software, onboard autonomy equipment and guidance technology for loading machines. Fortescue and Liebherr described the joint development and validation effort in their 2 July 2024 announcement.
- Fleet Management System (FMS): intended to coordinate truck movements and optimize fleet utilization and fuel and energy use.
- Onboard autonomy kit: the truck-side equipment that enables autonomous operation.
- High Precision Machine Guidance: guidance for loading equipment working with the haul trucks.
- Energy Management System: Fortescue’s September 2024 equipment announcement also describes coordinating stationary truck-charging assignments and charger utilization.
Fortescue says it designed the FMS to be OEM-agnostic, with the potential to integrate other autonomous platforms such as trucks, drills and watercarts. That is a stated design intent, not evidence that the system has already been deployed across other manufacturers’ equipment.
How many trucks are planned, and when?
On 25 September 2024, Fortescue announced an equipment agreement covering 475 machines, including approximately 360 autonomous battery-electric T 264 trucks. The announcement also described validation work and expected deployment dates; those dates were forecasts, not proof that the milestones occurred. See Fortescue’s equipment partnership announcement.

| Milestone | What Fortescue said | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| First T 264 deliveries | First trucks had been delivered to Western Australia in October 2023. | A delivery statement; it does not establish autonomous operation. |
| Autonomy validation | Four autonomous trucks were in validation at Fortescue’s test site in September 2024. | A validation-stage figure, not an operating fleet count. |
| First operational autonomous trucks | Expected in Q1 2025. | A company forecast made in 2024; the cited sources do not confirm it was met. |
| Battery-electric T 264 introduction | Fortescue’s current Track to Truck page says introduction into operations is planned for 2026. | A current plan, not confirmation of operational numbers or autonomous use. |
As of 8 October 2026, the cited official material does not state how many T 264s are operational or confirm that the new trucks are autonomously operating. The clearest current statement is the 2026 plan for introducing battery-electric T 264s.
How does this fit Fortescue’s existing autonomous fleet?
Fortescue already runs a large autonomous haulage operation. Its current Integrated Operations Centre page says Perth’s Hive remotely coordinates Pilbara operations and reports more than 200 autonomous haul trucks and approximately 500 million tonnes moved autonomously per annum. These are company-reported figures for its existing operations, not independently audited T 264 results.

Historical figures likewise describe Fortescue’s earlier fleet, not the new truck. In June 2020, the company reported that 168 autonomous trucks had been converted across the Solomon and Chichester Hubs, that the fleet had moved around 1.4 billion tonnes of material, and that productivity levels had increased by more than 30 per cent. Those figures cannot be treated as measured outcomes for the T 264 system; see the 2020 milestone announcement.
Fortescue CEO Dino Otranto said on 2 July 2024: “Our deep expertise in autonomous haulage, that has come from operating over 200 diesel autonomous haul trucks across our mine sites, has enabled Fortescue and Liebherr to develop a Fleet Management System that uniquely targets efficiency and unlocks untapped capacity in our fleet.” The statement explains the company’s rationale for the system; it is not independent verification of efficiency gains.

What has not been established about the T 264?
The cited official sources do not report T 264-specific productivity, safety or emissions outcomes, nor do they provide an independent technical test or specific autonomous safety-performance measures for this project. Fortescue’s existing fleet figures and historical productivity claim are useful context, but they do not demonstrate how the new truck performs.
Fortescue’s current Collision Avoidance System and HaulX page presents its broader technology suite. It does not resolve the T 264’s deployment status or establish outcomes for this particular AHS.
