Forrest Highway’s point-to-point speed cameras began enforcement on 6 September 2017; they are not a newly activated system. WA Government’s location page, updated 8 May 2026, lists the average-speed camera zone in both directions between Lake Clifton and Binningup. Locations can change, so check the WA Government camera location page and follow the speed-limit signs on the road.
Where are the point-to-point cameras on Forrest Highway?
The WA Government currently lists average-speed cameras on Forrest Highway between Lake Clifton and Binningup, covering southbound travel from Lake Clifton to Binningup and northbound travel from Binningup to Lake Clifton. The location page does not specify the zone’s length; a 2017 news report described it as 30 kilometres. The official page also cautions that camera locations may change without notice.
How do the cameras calculate speed?
At the zone’s entry and exit, cameras photograph a vehicle and use automatic number plate recognition to record its plate and passage time. The system uses the surveyed distance between those points and the elapsed time to calculate average speed. If that average exceeds the posted limit, an infringement may be issued.
Average-speed enforcement is distinct from spot-speed enforcement: the Forrest Highway system can also issue infringements for speed measured at the entry or exit. WA’s camera fact sheet says enforcement decisions depend on the nature of the speeding offence. Follow the posted speed limit throughout the zone; do not assume that maintaining a low average makes an entry or exit speed lawful.

When did Forrest Highway cameras start operating?
The WA Government says the zone went live on 6 September 2017. WA Police told Parliament in an answer dated 17 September 2020 that the cameras were switched on for enforcement that day, temporarily taken out of service or enforcement mode on 26 June 2018, and returned on 29 November 2018.
What do the published results and figures show?
In its 2017 launch announcement, the WA Government reported that a six-month test found statistically significant decreases in mean and high-level speeds, along with a 14 per cent improvement in compliance with the posted speed limit. That is a finding from the test period, not a current estimate. The announcement does not provide the underlying speed values.

WA Police’s 2020 parliamentary answer reported 36,576 infringements since the cameras began operating in 2017 and estimated that 6,000 to 10,000 vehicles travelled on the section in a 24-hour period. Those are dated historical figures, not current totals or traffic estimates.
For a shorter early snapshot, PerthNow reported that during the first 12 hours of operation in September 2017, 14 drivers were detected. The report said the highest recorded average speed was 130 km/h and that another driver was detected at 145 km/h. These figures describe that initial 12-hour period only.
